Adams Three-Run Homer Stretches Shuckers Division Lead to Four - Shuckers topple Biscuits, 5-2, in dominant fashion

Luke Adams turned 21 years old in April and he and his ,896 OPS gets more interesting every day. Look for an on-field postgame interview with Adams in this report:

Catcher Matt Wood singled twice and stole two bases. Wood had seven steals in his previous 238 professional games.

Starting RHP KC Hunt looks more like his 2024 self with each start, wouldn't mind seeing a six-inning effort again soon. 82 pitches here (53 strikes, only one walk), last went six on April 23rd (86 pitches).

Tyler Bryant (monthly splits) has put a terrible April way, way in the rear-view mirror.

Guilarte’s Sacrifice Fly is Game-Winner for Wisconsin - Timber Rattlers celebrate fourth walkoff of the season with 3-2 win over Cedar Rapids

We are being spoiled with Timber Rattlers media options as they are in the midst of a second consecutive home series. We'll miss this coming up with two back-to-back road matchups.

Whether it's Chris Mehring (here) or Kyle Lobner, they always have good questions for Estevez, and the skipper likewise is solid with his responses. Enjoy his comments on LHP Jesus Broca in the latest chat.

Have to love Jadher Areinamo completely unwinding himself on that HR yank down the left-field line. Goodness, he's so fun.

Speaking of fun -

Back to the highlights, the visual of the 6'3" Burke putting his arm around the 5'8" Areinamo after Jadher crossed the plate is a joyous reminder that baseball is a game available to all.

As a name game aficionado, I appreciated the Jaron DeBerry / Kyle DeBarge matchups. They even lined up the capital letters.

Charleston Sweeps Doubleheader from Mudcats

Three losses in a row and the division lead is down to two games.

All 13 position players on the roster started at least one game - the five players who played all 14 innings (two seven-inning contests): Jesus Made, Luis Pena, Eric Bitonti, Tyler Rodriguez, Luis Lameda.

Lameda started both games at third base, giving him five starts there on the season, less than he has at second base (13) or left field (7). Lameda doubled twice in the opener.

Rodriguez was 0-for-4 for the twinbill but walked in each game, since normally walks don't get you highlight reel moments, he did this:

Made, Pena and Bitonti combined to go 2-for-19 (Made and Bitonti singles) with one walk (Bitonti) and eight K's (four for Bitonti). As usual, our forum "as it happens" thread had wonderful analytical contributions including @sveumrules on the Mudcats' big first baseman.

The four pitchers who tallied at least 2.2 innings all struggled to some extent, although LHP Wande Torres at least limited the damage despite allowing nine baserunners in his 4.1 inning effort (RHP Jesus Flores stranded a Torres baserunner).

This was only 19-year-old RHP Bryce Meccage's second appearance since May 7th (illness absence), but this outing was not nearly as strong as his one eight days prior. His five walks surpassed his previous rookie-year high by two. Meccage has allowed as many walks as base hits (16 each) in his 29.1 innings over nine starts. Limiting the hits is nothing new for Meccage, thus the 1.09 WHIP thus far.

Final: ACL Guardians 3, ACL Brewers 1, seven innings as scheduled
Box Score and Game Log

18-year-old LHP Enderson Mercado (a young 18, the Venezuelan native's birthday was in March) was cruising until midway through the 4th inning, having retired his first ten batters. But my goodness, although all three Guardian runs in the 4th were earned, it was an ugly inning for catcher Kevin Garcia - a ground ball single surrendered by Mercado essentially turned into a triple after two stolen bases. Following a walk to put runners on the corners, a passed ball by Garcia allowed the first tally. Garcia then dropped a foul pop up for an error (though the batter only subsequently reached on a fielder's choice out). After another stolen base and an HBP, Mercado was victimized by two ground ball RBI singles. Although it didn't add to the scoring, Garcia capped the nightmare frame with a catcher's interference error.

I suppose I could have had you all just review the game log in detail!

The A-Crew managed only three hits and two walks, though one of the knocks was the first stateside home run for OF Pedro Ibarguen, leading off and playing center field here. In Ibarguen's first ACL season in 2024, he only managed two XBH's in 114 AB's, a SLG of .184, which needless to say, is not a pretty number.

This video goes back to 2023, which helps explain why the organization is sticking with the young man despite a modest $60,000 signing bonus. They are being rewarded with an .894 OPS in the still-small 16-game 2025 sample.

Final: DSL Brewers Blue 8, DSL Dodgers "Mega" 4
Box Score and Game Log

What a fantastic professional debut for 17-year-old Nicaraguan native RHP Diustin Mayorquin - 5 IP, 2H (both singles), 1 BB, 4K. He signed for only $27,500.

The offensive star was 17-year-old Dominican native SS Leonard Rijo, who has started each of the team's four games thus far (one at second base). Rijo tripled, singled, and walked twice. Rijo was a $175,000 signee in January.

Catcher Johanderson Tarazona (80-grade name), a switch-hitting 17-year-old out of Venezuela, singled twice and walked, though he was also caught stealing.

As is often the norm, the Blue Crew found themselves handed free passes, as they drew nine walks and were plunked twice. Brewer pitchers combined to walk six and HBP two.

Prized bonus baby CF Kenny Fenelon did not play in a 2nd consecutive game. Let the over-analysis handwringing begin (actually, don't).

Final: DSL Cubs Blue 3, DSL Brewers Gold 2
Box Score and Game Log

The dreaded Blueish-tinged Cublets pushed ahead the go-ahead run in the bottom of the 8th on what proved to be the costliest moment within 17-year-old Venezuelan RHP Raymond Sarmiento's otherwise sweet three-inning professional debut - a wild pitch with two out that moved the baserunner (single) into scoring position. A fly ball single to right field did the subsequent RBI damage.

Starting 17-year-old Dominican southpaw Joan Pena ($180,000 bonus) had a fine pro debut of his own - five IP of two-run ball, 1 BB, 4 K.

Shoutout to just-turned 17-year-old Venezuelan catcher Isais Chavez ($480,000 bonus) who has started three of the four Gold games thus far. Chavez homered and doubled (he had his first base knock, a single, earlier this week).

17-year-old Venezuelan RF Eryks Rivero ($300,000 bonus) had to leave the game after being plunked in the 9th inning. Hopefully OK.

We tried to get an eight-pack of games in on Friday but the weather in Nashville said, "not yet". We get to try again on Saturday for our first eight-pack of 2025 (Sounds doubleheader). Catch you again Sunday morning!

Some of our guys are leveling off or having ups and downs.  One guy who is pretty consistent is Burke.  Very sweet stroke. But man you’d like to see him lose weight.  He’s very flabby at a young age and that’s not good for the long run in terms of injuries etc.

Yeah I’ve seen Rowdy comps because he’s bigger but Rowdy never seemed flabby. I get more Vogelbach vibes from Burke so I hope that he can get into better shape and doesn’t get bigger as he ages into his 20’s.

Tip of the cap to INF Daniel Guilarte. He has hit two absolutely key pro sac flies to plate key RBI's of late vs these Kernels (has four SF on the season). That was a pro's pro sac fly. 1-1. Men on the corners. One down. 2-2 game bottom of 9. How about I golf shot this lil beauty to the deep CF warning track?!? Just awesome to see. You may not know it if you aren't watching the games and you just look at his raw offensive numbers (not pretty): he has played much better overall baseball of late. It's small steps with these young players sometimes. I definitely am noticing. Man, if he could somehow find any semblance of an average hit tool...as is, I will appreciate his plus defense and cannon arm and the small incremental improvements. In limited May/June AB he has put together just a much better overall approach to identifying balls and strikes. Hopefully, this is a start of a slow turn toward more productivity.
