On June 12, the Mets held the best record in baseball, a full 21 games over .500. They had stretched their NL East lead to 5 1/2 games with an 8 1/2-game margin for error in the fledgling playoff race.

Three and a half months later, their season ended without a postseason berth.

Over their final 93 games, the Mets went 38-55, producing a better record than only four teams: the bottom-feeding White Sox, Nationals, Twins and Rockies.

Not to wax philosophical but...

I hate the end of the regular season. During the season, there are tons of games every day. They all mean something, or maybe not so much since there's always tomorrow. It's a long fun ride, and I never love to see it end.

Of course it's nice when our team gets to keep playing!

I know what you mean. There is something nice to look forward to nearly every day from April through September.

If it is any consolation, pitchers and catchers report in 135 days 🙂

When I was a kid, every day I would scour the sports page for box scores, standings, etc. On the Monday following the last game of the season, I would look at the standings, and instead of the daily lineup of teams and starting pitchers, it would say:

End of Regular Season

Always made me sad.
