It gives you points and there is enough time left for multiple possessions for 2 more fgs that win you the game even if you cant score a TD.  Going for it in that spot speeds up you losing alot more than playing "not to win"

I would hate it simply because it gives Carolina urgency to kick a winning FG. If you stop them on their side of the field they will punt.

Yeah.  With how much time is left I'd rather go for the tie.  If we get the lead it makes it 4 down territory for them and I'm more confident in forcing them to punt than stop them for 4 downs.

There's too much time left. You consider it if the game is ending, but they will be trying to kick a FG either way. If they are down by 1, they're in 4 down territory. They'll punt in an unfavorable down and distance if it's tied.
