Brewers management isn’t 1980’s Tigers FO dumb.

Trading Smoltz, a 22nd-round draft choice who at the time was a AA pitcher with a 5-10 record, for Alexander, who went 9-0 with a 1.53 ERA down the stretch for the Tigers after they traded for him? People focus on Smoltz' career, but imagine if the Brewers got a guy who went 9-0 down the stretch and in the playoffs. They would be celebrating Arnold's genius. And, the Tigers only won the division on the second-to-last day of the season, making Alexander's presence even more crucial in a time when only the division winner made the playoffs.

I'd take that trade for the Brewers. Isn't that exactly what we are hoping for when we talk about trading for Skubal, Ryan, Detmers, etc? Just because Smoltz had an extreme outlier of a career doesn't make it a bad trade. Bravo to the Braves for identifying Smoltz as an arm they could develop.

Their incompentent FO is who they should be mad at. Of course they wanted our prospects more they are better.
