It's really nice seeing Bitonti coming around after the rough AA stretch and rough 1st 5 or 6 AFL games. Do we think Payne sitting 3 games is an small injury?

From the scouts I have talked to they really like Payne but it comes with a caveat.  He has to cut down on the strikeouts.  They said he is an everyday CF and should produce 25 HR’s a season but with low average.  If he can cut his K% to around 25% that would be ideal.

They think he added about 20 pounds since he was drafted and it shows in his power numbers.  One scout graded him as a 60 defensively in CF and 70 in power.  Hitting wise they have him at a 50 because of the strikeouts.  This is all at a 50-80 rating scale.  Other scouts I talked to didn’t want to give out rating scales as they have only seen him in the AFL.  The one scout has seen him a lot in the minors.

Payne reminds me a lot of Curtis Granderson that both of them had/have some weird imbalance in there swing. Obviously that would be a best case situation for Payne in all likelihood but I think there is still a way for him to be a .270-.280 hitter in the bigs even if he strikeout 150+ times a year. I think it is easy to forget he played most of the year at 19. I would expect the team to slow his rise down a bit with Chourio, Mitchell, Lara (Sal) and the Josh A. ahead of him. For me he has 2 years until he needs to be ready unless we trade Mitchell next offseason with 1 year of control left.

Maybe it's because he's sandwiched between Quero & Dinges on the organizational ladder but It seems like Matthew Wood has been overlooked a little. I've liked him for quite a while & love the fall season he's turning in.

Saturday Box Score

Scottsdale falls 5-4 in eight innings (scheduled for seven). Scorpions now 9-6-1 on the season, former Brewers farmhand Jhonny Severino (Carlos Santana July 2023 acquisition from Pirates) with the walk-off single.

But it was a good day for the four Milwaukee system players -

Catcher Matt Wood (DH'ing here) singled in four trips, drove in a run.

RHP Miqueas Mercedes won't turn 21 until next July. He allowed only one run in three innings of work (1 H, 1 BB, 4 K).

Jett Williams and Eric Bitonti posted nearly identical impressive box score lines as your review on the link above will show. Included is a stolen base for each, Eric's 4th and Jett's 6th.

Braylon Payne still out, has now missed four games.

I don't know if this matters - I know what you are posting is accurate - but the AFL Standings at the AFL website shows they counted the Scottsdale/Mesa tie as a 'Win'. They list Scottsdale as 10-6 in the standings tied with the also 10-6 Surprise Saguaros.

Monday Box Score

Scottsdale drops a 10-6 game that wasn't that close (9-0 deficit after five innings). Scorpions now 10-7 on the season.

Good news is that Braylon Payne returned to action after being idle for four games. Tough news is that he was 0-for-5 with four K's. The fact that Payne returned as a DH indicates he was likely battling a slight pain point.

Jett Williams singled and walked and played a clean game at shortstop.

Matthew Wood played a full game behind the plate - throwing error but also back-picked a runner at first base. At the plate, Wood walked once in five appearances.

RHP Joshua Quezada had another solid outing, allowed a single in a scoreless frame, one K.

Tuesday Box Score

Scottsdale wins 11-6 to move to 11-7 on the season.

First baseman Eric Bitonti, batting 6th, was the lone Brewers position player to see action, on base thrice, 1-for-3 with a walk and also a HBP.

LHP Jose Meneses had an eventful two-thirds of an inning trying to close it out. Two K's but also two walks, a wild pitch, and an error by his third baseman made things too close for comfort. A reliever allowed one inherited runner to score.

Wednesday Box Score

Scottsdale fell 4-0 to drop to 11-8 on the season.

No Brewers pitched.

Jett Williams, playing CF, 0-for-3 with a walk.

Matthew Wood was the DH and singled in three trips.

Eric Bitonti started at first base in the cleanup spot, but last saw action on defense in the top of the 3rd, when that inning ended on a 4-3 groundout. I watched that play on the archive and there was no indication of any discomfort, it was as routine a play for a first baseman as it gets.
