Mark Attanasio appreciation thread

In September 2004, a man named Mark Attanasio bought a baseball team in baseball’s smallest market. At the time the team was wrapping up it’s 4th 94+ loss season in a row. No winning season in over a decade and no postseason appearance since 1982. He took over a franchise lucky to convince 2 million fans to come to the ballpark.

In his first year as owner, the Brewers went .500 and a few years later won more games than they lost. 2008 saw a postseason appearance and 3 million fans come to watch them. In his 22 years owning the Brewers, only once have they lost 90+ games. 2 postseason appearances before him and now we have 12 total. 
 

I have always and will always be grateful this cheap ass bought the Milwaukee Brewers.

It's the latter part that is the key.  Knowing how to build an organization.  Bringing in the right people - not necessarily "talent" (assuming you are referring to on-field talent), but people who fit the organizational culture.  Culture is so important - making sure that everyone is on the same page.

He also identified how they can win - corporate strategy.  Can't compete with free agent acquisition, but what can you do with less money than a top free agent commands?  Build an analytics-based pitching lab.  Build a Latin American academy that not only develops on-field talent but also builds the off-field skills in order to be able to successfully live in another country and ensure that those players aren't going to struggle socially after they get to the US.  Hedge bets with pre-major-league talent that at least has a defensive floor to warrant the investment.

That's all corporate strategy - figuring out where and how you can compete when others have more resources than you.
