Silly Greg, of course at this time of the year with the team in 5th place in the NL Central every game counts to prevent the Brewers from ending up in last place. Blow out Sheets shoulder! So what, we need that extra win. If Ben's feeling tired, call him a sissy and question Seaver's paternity. Real battlers don't complain about torn labrum's!!!

Yeah! He's a horse, an inning eater! You just look at him, and you know he can throw 150 pitches! Like Cal Eldred! Oops . . . bad example.

 

But Clancy's post raises a serious point, and I wonder if anyone has data on this. I thought that (1) extra rest doesn't really mitigate damage from high pitch counts, and (2) extra rest actually hurts pitchers sometimes. But both of those statements fall into the "I think I read it somewhere, but I don't know where" category, and Clancy's point does make intuitive sense. Can anyone help?

Rany J. from Baseball Prospectus did a study on this, basically showing pitch counts are more important than innings worked. The reason (supposedly) for injuries occuring after big increases in innings worked os that they often include much high pitch counts per game, not just more games. Its part of the argument to bring back the four man rotation, that the extra games won't hurt if pitch counts are limited in starts.
