A bizarre assignment

As a former reporter in the Lake County, Ill. area and "sometimes" patron of this gentlemen's club, I did some investigative work on the club awhile back that did not result in any published reports and due to the uncooperating individuals, I couldn't write an article and my work was subpoenaed by the Lake County State's Attorney's office so I have within 14 days to turn over any of my notes and recorded transcripts (I had a tape recorder hidden in my shirt pocket.) Apparently the case involves the mistreatment of the exotic dancers and I had to act as a patron, who was doing an investigative piece on potential abuse of the dancers when patrons decline to go VIP with the dancers. I haven't had this internship in like 7 months and they come to me now with my subpoena?

Wow, are you going to pull a Judy Miller and go to jail rather than surrender your First Amendment rights?

 

Seriously, though: your former employer should be supplying you with legal representation, since you were in their employ when this happened. If they won't hook you up, try to find some pro bono type who will do it for free.

 

Actually, if you're willing to be a martyr for the First Amendment, it might be great for your career. (Editors eat this stuff up.)
