Tried some Sam Adams Imperial Pilsner a while back and liked it quite a bit. I returned to the store and grabbed the last 4 pack. The liquor dude said that it was a limited run, there won't be any for quite some time.

I called a few places and they never had any or were out. I finally found a case at Discount Liquor, bought the whole thing, and I'm a happy camper.

It's a super hopped up beer and I love it.

I took some to brian the automator's house once to gift him, but I drank three of them. Oh well. Sorry, Brian.

Anyone ever have McEwan's Scotch Ale? I had my first bottle the other night and really enjoyed it. Kind of pricy to pick up all the time (I think if you can find it, it's around 10 bucks for six bottles). I guess according to Budweiser, it's very flawed because it's a dark beer, though.

I s'pose to Budweiser, though, a beer that tastes good is flawed. Just for anyone that didn't/doesn't know, they stole their name from a great Czech (I think it was Czech) beer, and basically bastardize it every time they print that name on their crap.

Unfortunatly The Great Dane doesn't show when they have seasonal beers anywhere on their website.

Mmmm... the Scotch Ale. Great value for the punch it packs. Try the IPA there - delicious.

Recently I've taken a liking to Dogfish Head IPA. I was never really a fan of IPA's before that, but I really liked that one.

 

For those that have mentioned New Glarus, I will always credit Spotted Cow with being the beer that created the spark to move on from domestic beers. It's a good first step for those beer drinkers that want to explore more "exotic" beers but are afraid of the "dark" beers. New Glarus as a whole is pretty good for that. Last weekend I was drinking Fat Squirrel, and I think Totally Naked is one of my favorite beers ever (still a notch below Anchor Steam, though). And on those nights when I can't decide between the sweet taste of wine and the delicious beer flavor, I'll go for a bottle of New Glarus cherry. I've also been known to buy a bottle of this when I'm mostly drunk.

IF you happen to be in the La Crosse area, I'd recommend the Downtown Brewery over in the old La Crosse Footwear building. Their pale ale on tap is actually really good. I'm not a huge, huge pale fan, but that one was really tasty. And the "tasting room" itself is pretty great. They've done well for themselves.

 

If you want a good west coast beer, I recommend Northcoast Brewery in Fort Bragg. I mentioned the Pranqster earlier, but really, I haven't had a beer that I disagreed with there yet. The Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout is incredible, their Blue Star wheat is pretty good, and the Red Seal Ale packs a good punch. Goooood stuff. And I think readily available in most places West (and slightly East) of the Mighty Mississippi.

I believe the name actually comes from a city named "Budweis" or something, in the Czech Republic. I don't think it was an actual name of a company or brand.

Fwiw, I finally was able to secure some more Deschutes Jubilale tonight. I'd been searching for it, and had started to accep that it's just all been consumed (since it's a seasonal, they only brew a fixed amount). Happy day!

TLB, I come down for the PDX Brewers festival every year, we might have to hook up there for some beer. It's the last weekend in July every year.

 

My favorite Portland/Oregon beer without a doubt is the Amnesia Brewing Copacetic IPA. The brewpub is in North Portland . . .

Nope, it is the name of a Czech brand. The original Bud, which I'm told, is nothing like the swill Anheiser puts out.

The US brand was first and used Budweis as an adjective.

Somebody got me a big kit as a wedding gift this fall . .i haven't cracked it open yet as we are looking for a new house currently. I wouldn't torture anyone with sampling my first attempts . . .

I have had it . . last year they brought the Cream Stout to the festival this year. I wasn't a fan. I liked the Proleterate Red, but IIRC my general opinon of their offerings was "meh . . "

 

They only had the Pub on NW 23rd when I lived in town, and despite my non-hippie leanings, I was an Eastsider fairly through and through. Lucky Lab was a heck of a lot closer and the beer was better. LL's food on the otherhand was the defenition of "Meh . . " and in a town with as great of eats as PDX that's a big minus.

Haven't tried LL yet, but I can say that as far as I know NOL only has that same location - their Red to me was alright, not great, but I can't wait for the Brewers festival. Plus, it's basically a festival that I can pretend celebrates the Milwaukee baseballers, so I can collect cheap memorabilia and giggle about it.

EDR - I scoured the local Fred Meyer's beer aisle for either of these breweries last night. Alas, it was to no avail. I'll check around elsewhere.

I always found that Zupan's had the best selection, slightly pricy but a good array.

Thanks for the tip... that's good to know. The first thought I had of 'next place to check' was, in fact, Zuppan's. I live a few blocks away from one - Whole Foods isn't far enough to dissuade me from making it the third option. I've never bought beer at either spot, mostly due to the Fred Meyer's good selection.

 

Since yesterday was payday... perhaps a beer run to Zuppan's is in order. For others out there with a dorky sense of humor like me, for my own satisfaction each time I see Zuppan's, I always call it (in my mind) Geff Zuppan's. Makes the 4-y-o Brewers fan inside of me happy.

 

EDIT: I lamed out & just went to the regular ol' supermarket. Enjoying some Red Hook Longhammer IPA as we speak. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif The website is kind of obnoxious (especially that bartender - creepy), but they give full breakdowns of what ingredients they use & a lot of the technical process employed in brewing.

Did New Glarus stop brewing Yokel? This was my favorite beer of theirs, and haven't seen it in stores in a long time. I also didn't see it listed on their website. It would surprise me if they did stop because I thought it was pretty popular. I see "Buy local, drink Yokel" bumper stickers all over Madison.

I've seen Yokel at a number of places here in the Fox Valley, and just last night found a restaurant (Nakashima's) that carries it all the time. Pretty sure they haven't stopped brewing it, but I will say that the markets I've seen it in also carry alot more different New Glarus stuff than they used too. Maybe the places you've visited just chose other "flavors" instead, I don't know.
