Melky Cabrera (Merged: Other "Melky Cabrera" thread)

If the Yankees do end up signing Cameron (which would be ideal in my mind), what do you think it would take to get the then expendable Melky Cabrera? I believe he would be a much better option than Cameron in the outfield. He can play any outfield position, strong arm, switch hitter, young, and cheap. What would it take?

So, if Ken Rosenthal is correct,

The Yankees are showing serious interest in Cameron, major-league sources say, figuring that they could trade center fielder Melky Cabrera even if they do not send him to the Twins for left-hander Johan Santana. The Yankees likely would seek prospects for Cabrera

should we be hoping the Yankees sign Cameron so that we can make a play for a young, switch-hitting centerfielder? I'll admit that I know lilttle about Cabrera's defensive abilities, but his switch-hitting would add another left-handed bat to the lineup.

I don't think it would take a ton...but the Brewers would have to give up at least one of their "good" young guys...maybe a package like Villy/Hall or even Vargas/Gwynn would do it. I almost think that would be overpaying, though.

Not sure how I feel about Melky...some people think he's an up and coming star, others say he won't be any more than "decent." The media tends to overhype Yankee players, to boot.

My thoughts exactly...as evidence by the almost exactly duplicate thread.

Exactly Invader. He's only 23 years old, and his energy and enthusiasm would mesh well with the current core of players on the team. If it takes a package like Turnbow/Gwynn, I think Doug should pull the trigger. Also, if Turnbow thinks the fan pressure is bad in Milwaukee, I'd love to see how he'd handle it in NYC.

I don't think Melky's a BAD player, but optimally, I don't see how he's anything better than a 4th outfielder. His defense is pretty run-of-the-mill, ad he's got pretty minimal pop. I don't think power would be the pre-requisite of a CF solution, but his on-base skills aren't all that great either.

Honestly, I think his trade value is higher due to Yankee hype than actual talent. I think the Brewers could do worse in CF, but I think they could do better. I would actually like Cameron over Melky, assuming the finances weren't unbearable.

Melky is an extremely skilled defender. As for his offense... meh. We already have a better all-around CF in Hall if you ask me.

Agreed. Melky is very overrated.

Cameron would only cost money. Trading for Melky would cost a good player. (Whatever they wanted for Melky - is very likely higher than I would pay)

I can't believe that cabrera would cost that much. I don't think he'll ever be an offensive force, but he is a nice fielder (high ZR, LOTS of assists for a CF).
