  1. This is a couple days old, but McCalvy noted on his blog that Counsell turned down this offer.
  2. You've swayed me from being indifferent on retaining Gonzalez to wanting to see it happen. I still feel confident if SS is manned by Segura & Bianchi, but having Gonzalez back in the fold would be a nice luxury.
  3. Maybe a main reason they're shopping him is in the hopes of signing Greinke (clearing payroll room)
  4. Most scouts and baseball insiders would disagree with this. In fact, most would state it's more probable that Segura moves to 2B once Weeks is gone. It's definitely not moot. I'm glad you're excited about his play in the limited action we saw him in last season, but Segura never profiled as a good-fielding shortstop and at best right now he's roughly average. That's at age 22 before any sort of skills decline in his late 20's. Please check your PMs ... didn't want to derail a Josh Hamilton thread any further
  5. The issue of leaving SS solely to a converted second-baseman with 45 games of MLB experience who's actually the senior there as Bianchi has 33 games. (And whether or not to re-sign Alex Gonzalez) I realize Segura is the starter, but this could go downhill really quickly and I'm sure it's on Melvin's mind. At least I hope so. Well it's obvious from his play merely in MLB last season that the whole 'he hasn't played SS much' argument is moot. Dude is a big-league SS, period. And I feel fine about Bianchi as the backup MIF, along with having Green available to cover at 2B.
  6. He accused Joe Torre & others within the Yankees org. of being racists a few years back. So, there's that.
  7. Ladies & gentlemen, introducing your newest Marlin, Eric Arrrrrrrr-nett!
  8. As long as people aren't basing the idea that he's under-appreciated on whether or not posters suggest trading him, I won't begrude the opinion. Honestly I don't think he is, but many here had some impatience with him when he was still developing as a younger hitter.
  9. Melvin's best quote ever. Agreed, it was relieving to read that. His avg. FB velocity in his first four seasons was 91+. The past two it was 89.1 & 88.6. I admit I know basically nothing about his health status, but the velocity certainly isn't encouraging.
  10. That would probably be Shouse in '08
  11. On his blog, Adam McCalvy has some parting comments/thoughts from Manny: "Parra thankful for time with Brewers" An excerpt: Best of luck to you, Manny.
  12. MLB forum readers, this thread is just a taste of the content Mass Haas provides pretty much daily (yes, even in the offseason) in the MiLB forum. If you aren't already a regular reader, do yourself a favor & check on the MiLB forum more often. Mass, you are a beast.
  13. Completely agree. I hope Melvin & Co. are able to stick to the trade market for the bullpen, as long as the prices are this reasonable.
  14. His performance drop wasn't really in the second half, it was the middle third (June .754 OPS, July .607). August OPS of .943 & September of .873. He was ridiculously on fire in his first two months; I don't think it's fair to use that as the bar he should've hit to all season.
  15. Sinkerballer/groundball-inducing righty. Not as bad so far in his career against LHB as Loe, and in general seems like a moderate upgrade over Loe. Under salary control for two more seasons. EDIT: Here is a good FanGraphs interview piece w/Badenhop. Very statistically-inclined guy (economics degree-holder), and very much likes defensive shifting like the Brewers employ.
  16. It isn't just about bad routes. He completely loses flyballs on a regular basis. He doesn't look like a CF at all when you watch him, I think expecting him to play CF would be a huge mistake. His age really doesn't matter much in that statement. Well according to you, it was a huge mistake for the Nats to call him up in the first place.
  17. I think it would be a lot more useful to look at his career L/R splits, since he didn't tally that many PAs last season v. RH: .207/.305/.364/.669 v. LH: .242/.312/.447/.759 At this point I'd much rather go with Bianchi to backup the MIF if a LH/SW backup isn't available (since Weeks & Segura are obviously RHBs), and keep looking for a corner IF/OF RH backup bat. Ransom is old enough that he should be expected to be getting worse with each season.
  18. $14-15M AAV for 2012 Carlos Gomez without the defense. The money in MLB is getting to be incomprehensible at this point.
  19. PS3 owner. I love the Blu-Ray feature Raw Biz noted. The Show is a good franchise -- while its longtime players might grouse that it hasn't really innovated as much in recent years and/or that it has its limitations, it's still the best baseball video game ever produced imo. I haven't played The Show in a while, but iirc a full 9-inning game takes a little over an hour to play. Again to echo Raw Biz, one of the main drawbacks for PS3 would be no Halo, so if that's a big game for you then it'd be a tough call. I don't really play a wide variety of games, so I'm happy with the library available on PS3.
  20. Of course, Melivin's patcher approach has already wasted at least two or three. But let's stick with that, it's been working so well. I'm not against FA entirely, but Melvin has to be both careful and lucky for that route to pan out. I'd much rather see him work the trade market.
  21. I'm not sure what looks so shady here. This is a young man with a legit shot at a career in the NFL, and whose stock shouldn't rise or fall much based on another game or two. So, because Kiffin (and admittedly shady-seeming dude) and Barkley decide to play it safe with his career... it's a multi-million dollar conspiracy? The simple reality could be that the first glance/diagnosis of his shoulder didn't look good, and the parties involved would rather not hurt Barkley's draft status by going public with info.
  22. Iirc you recently said the Royals' A-ball rotation last season was the best MiLB rotation you'd seen in recent years. Seems like that would mean said pitchers would be about 3 seasons away. Not suggesting you said anything contrary, but your post here reminded me of how highly you regarded their A rotation.
