  1. With the amount of bunting RR/the Brewers do, I wonder if that's played a role in making the offense less consistent -- the notion that if you're playing for one run, that's all you'll get.
  2. I liked what (admittedly pretty little) I've seen from Lamb in college. Is there any reason to expect he'll struggle to translate his game to the NBA?
  3. Another great pitching matchup; let's hope the Brewers can help continue Latos's struggles so far.
  4. Team A should take that trade 15 times out of every 10 imo. Getting Trout in a keeper league? Yes.
  5. Let's try to keep in mind this is just one start for Nelson, & he gets to move on & try again real soon EDIT: Whoa, didn't realize that his only other AA start pretty eerily mirrors this one -- 5 BB/2 K in 5 IP last time out. Here's hoping Jimmy can reign in the downhill thunder & at least keep it on the course.
  6. If* that's true, then ladies & gentlemen the baseline for Greinke bidding this coming offseason has just been set. If this is true, I hope I'm wrong & he signs, but I think just about any team with moderate financial flexibility & a need for SP will be willing to pay him that. * I'll freely admit I have no idea who Bill Michaels is, but I haven't seen a much less-reliable looking rumor in a while. His blog post is about 'Where has T-Plush gone?!' ... and the THROW-IN is ... 'Oh yeah, by the way, some Greinke guy? I dunno -- I guess he got offered a contract or something'
  7. Well if you want to see what I think of the 2012 Brewers, look no further than the 2011 Reds. The talent really is there, but the results just aren't. This is a season in which (imo) a GM needs to recognize the stars haven't aligned, and that it's a perfect time to be selling some of the most valuable arms in the game. Not to buy two bullpen arms and a SS in the hopes that a .525-talent team (or thereabouts) can win 2 of every 3 games the rest of the way.
  8. At this point it seems unfortunate that Maysonet it the odd man out. Perhaps this is just because they thought they'd be able to get him to Nashville? This is a Doug Melvin GM'd team. You can remove the "perhaps"
  9. The different rules are a reminder of when the AL & NL were separate entities, I guess. But remember that the DH rule was added well after the two had merged... decades later, generations later. I just wish the DH would be implemented MLB-wide.
  10. This team is so obviously a .500 team at this point, it's not even funny. But naturally to Melvin, that's just one 15-game winning streak away from getting right back in this race!
  11. Why would you keep him over someone who has better numbers in that role than he has? Ishikawa has about the same number of ab's and has done better. Because Taylor Green actually has a chance to have a decent career & has more talent as a hitter than Ishikawa... and can defend positions aside from the easiest one on the field. Not to mention Green himself can play a passable 1B. Green has more value than Ishikawa, period... and that's why you keep him. Think of it this way -- would you rather develop & retain a clone of Mike Fontenot, or keep a guy who can only play 1B & is a well-below avg. hitter at that spot. You can literally find a guy like Ish for free every offseason. There's nothing special about him & no reason to keep him over continuing Green's development at the big-league level. Are you under the impression that keeping Ish over Green is going to be that push over the hump & into the postseason this year? Because if you don't, you let Ish walk & keep Green ten times out of ten.
  12. I'm pretty sure he's been in this "category" for you for years now
  13. After the Stars fell behind 3-0 in the 1st, they rallied for five runs in the top half of the 3rd, keyed by the first five batters reaching... including a Scooter Gennett two-run double & a Hunter Morris 3-run jack. And Josh Prince (as kind of expected) did not move to SS in Tommy Manzella's absence (injured in last night's game); Juan Sanchez is manning the position today. Prince is playing his usual CF. Jimmy "Evan Anundsen" Nelson has struggled mightily so far, with 4 ER allowed on 2 H & 5 BB through 3.1 IP.
  14. Huntsville 5, @Jackson 2 Huntsville Box A two-run 1st for the Stars gave them a 2-0 lead they held until the Generals answered with their own two-run frame in the 5th. Zeroes were again posted by both clubs until the top of the 9th, when the Stars were finally able to break the tie and secure the win with a three-run, two-out rally... everything after two! Huntsville starter Hiram Burgos continued his success with another strong outing: 7 IP, 7 H, 2 R/ER, 1 BB, 8 K, 5:3 GO:AO. The only real blip on Burgos's radar tonight was a two-run homer surrendered in the 5th. For some reason, however, he was lifted from the game after seven strong while being credited (in the box score) with just 81 pitches. On top of that, Burgos's most recent start was last Sunday... so I'm a little confused as to why his leash was so short in tonight's game. However, the Stars relievers held up their end of the bargain -- Darren Byrd worked a scoreless 8th, and Mitch Stetter and Jesus Sanchez combined to slam the door on the Generals in the bottom of the 9th. Stetter retired the first two Jackson players -- one K & one pop-up -- but was pulled after allowing a two-out single. Sanchez came on and struck out his only batter for the final out of the game. Leadoff man LF Lee Haydel went 2-3 with a walk, and his two-run double in the top of the 9th was easily the Stars' biggest hit in the game. 2-hole hitter CF Josh Prince also had a two-hit night, finishing 2-5 with an RBI; his RBI came right after Haydel's big double in the 9th, and pushed the Huntsville lead out to 5-2. 2B Scooter Gennett, DH Scott Krieger, RF Kentrail Davis, and replacement SS Juan Sanchez each singled once, and were the only other Stars with hits. Krieger and C Anderson De La Rosa walked once apiece. SS Tommy Manzella was removed from the game after the 3rd inning, and if I had to guess I'd guess that he got dinged up on a double-play turn in the home half of the 2nd inning. Even though we probably already know the answer (given that Tommy Manzella was the starting SS over Prince anyway), it'll be interesting to see if Prince will be the one to take over at SS now. Hey, a guy can dream! Huntsville PbP The top of the 1st definitely had a 'thank you very much' error by the Generals, but three straight singles to lead off the game really got things going: Huntsville Top of the 1st -Lee Haydel singles on a line drive to center fielder Denny Almonte. -Josh Prince singles on a line drive to center fielder Denny Almonte. Lee Haydel to 2nd. -Scooter Gennett singles on a ground ball to center fielder Denny Almonte. Lee Haydel scores. Scooter Gennett to 2nd. Josh Prince advances to 3rd, on throwing error by center fielder Denny Almonte. -Hunter Morris strikes out swinging. -Hainley Statia strikes out swinging. -Scott Krieger walks. -Kentrail Davis reaches on missed catch error by first baseman Eric Campbell, assist to catcher Jesus Sucre. Josh Prince scores. Scooter Gennett to 3rd. Scott Krieger to 2nd. -Anderson De La Rosa grounds out, second baseman Stefen Romero to first baseman Eric Campbell. I wonder if Davis's ball in play was a swinging bunt, or if Squeeze Fever! has trickled all the way down the organizational ranks. And here's the decisive visitors' half of the 9th: Huntsville Top of the 9th -Pitcher Change: Jonathan Arias replaces Andrew Kittredge. -Scott Krieger grounds out, third baseman Nate Tenbrink to first baseman Eric Campbell. -Kentrail Davis singles on a fly ball to left fielder Chris Pettit. -With Anderson De La Rosa batting, Kentrail Davis steals (10) 2nd base. -Anderson De La Rosa walks. -Juan Sanchez flies out to left fielder Chris Pettit. -Lee Haydel doubles (3) on a line drive to center fielder Denny Almonte. Kentrail Davis scores. Anderson De La Rosa scores. -With Josh Prince batting, wild pitch by Jonathan Arias, Lee Haydel to 3rd. -Josh Prince singles on a line drive to left fielder Chris Pettit. Lee Haydel scores. -With Scooter Gennett batting, Jonathan Arias picks off Josh Prince at 1st on throw to Eric Campbell. Costly time for Prince to get caught leaning at 1B, but at least it didn't come back to haunt Huntsville. Huntsville Gameday
  15. Mitch Stetter is trying to nail down the save for Huntsville, after a two-RBI double from Lee Haydel in the top of the 9th broke a tie... the Stars went on to take a 5-2 lead.
  16. I literally didn't know he was still playing until he popped up in a game against the Brewers. 45 years old!!!
  17. At this point, Gamel to RF & Hart to 1B just seems too simple to pass up. I think many are really underestimating just how badly the Brewers are missing Mat's batt this season.
  18. Iirc that was colbyjack's one knock on McFarland in the draft discussions -- that he wouldn't stick at SS. But everything else about him so far seems to be easy to like. Also hard not to get excited about that start from Mark Rogers. I just hope his hand is ok... the guy certainly doesn't need another fluky injury to deal with.
  19. I love this quote from Matt Erickson in that piece -- “The great thing about baseball, once you’re drafted, everybody now kind of becomes the same,’’ said Erickson. “And the game separates who can play and who can’t play."
  20. Like father, like son, I guess. Can I ask if you mean 'just' 4 OF assists, or has RMJ nailed 4 baserunners at 3B alone so far?
  21. I decided to read this IGT just 'cause. I'd like to thank you for ensuring it was worth my time.
  22. Pretty funny to see that graphic that Fox put up when Livan was warming in the 'pen -- this is his 9th MLB team. And I completely agree on Thurston's post, bacon06. Definitely worthy of praise.
  23. @Jackson 5, Huntsville 1 Huntsville Box Nothing stood out more in this game than the performance from Generals starter Anthony Fernandez in his first-ever AA start. The 22-yo lefty needed just 96 pitches to throw his complete game, and he didn't need much time, either -- the recorded game time was just two hours and eighteen minutes. He allowed only one run on six hits, with one walk issued. Fernandez, a product of Seattle's Dominican academy, completed a strong first half of the season with A+ High Desert. He led the HD Mavericks overall in IP & K, and led all SPs in ERA, & BB allowed. He's listed at 6'4"/180 lbs., and if his raw stuff matches the statistical results thus far in his career, we might be hearing more about Fernandez down the road -- he was a post-season All-Star in both '09 & '10. So by now you're probably wondering if this is a Brewerfan.net writeup or a Marinersfan.net writeup, but honestly Fernandez just dominated the game & the stat lines. LF Scott Krieger came up with the Stars' lone RBI, singling home 3B Hainley Statia after Statia had doubled with one out in the second. CF Josh Prince went 1-3 with a walk, and stole his 24th bag of the season (24/34, 71% rate). SS Tommy Manzella and 2B Scooter Gennett both went 1-4, while 1B Hunter Morris went 1-3. RF Kentrail Davis, C Anderson De La Rosa, and DH Domnit Bolivar were all hitless on the game. Huntsville SP Kyle Heckathorn had a so-so outing, with all of the runs he allowed coming on a pair of longballs -- a three-run shot in the 3rd, and a solo shot in his final inning, the 6th. He finished with a line of 6 IP, 7 H, 4 R/ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 1 WP, 6:3 GO:AO. Dan Meadows worked the 7th and allowed one run on one hit, one HBP, & one walk. Darren Byrd tossed a perfect frame in his only inning. Huntsville PbP Not really anything good to post, so I'll post what looked like the most interesting (read: manager-life-expectancy-shortening) inning for the Stars: Huntsville Top of the 1st -Josh Prince walks. -With Tommy Manzella batting, Josh Prince steals (24) 2nd base. -Tommy Manzella reaches on a fielder's choice out, pitcher Anthony Fernandez to shortstop Gabriel Noriega to third baseman Leury Bonilla to second baseman Stefen Romero. Josh Prince out at 3rd. -Scooter Gennett pops into double play, shortstop Gabriel Noriega to first baseman Jharmidy De Jesus. Tommy Manzella doubled off 1st. It'd started off looking like a great way to begin to the game... but then... baserunning mistakes. Huntsville Gameday
