  1. Lucroy just doesn't profile real well as a big-league hitter. He does for his position, though, so he'll be fine... but I agree about not wanting him hitting high up in the order.
  2. Apologies if this has been posted already, but per McCalvy: According to the AP, starter Shaun Marcum requested $8.7 million in arbitration and the Brewers offered $6.75 million. Marcum earned $4.05 million last season and was Milwaukee’s most reliable starting pitcher before a late-season swoon. The right-hander is entering his final season before free agency, but the sides have discussed only a one-year agreement. Reliever Jose Veras, acquired in December from the Pirates for third baseman Casey McGehee, filed for $2.375 million and the Brewers offered $2 million, according to the AP. McGehee, incidentally, filed for $2.725 million and the Pirates offered $2.35 million.
  3. Much like Johnny Damon, 'Prince has always wanted to play in Detroit'
  4. Maybe I've watched too much Jose Valentin and Jose K in my day, but I really don't think Betancourt was that bad. Annnnnd I'm done here. Sorry to waste anyone's time.
  5. Wow, people can really start to feel ok about the Brewers 'getting stuck with him' now. Although I wonder if there's some deferred money here, the blog post specifically notes the $8M is just the base salary.
  6. http://newspaper.li/static/0ef4c1b7f8339a31bbda4cb66bf3a0be.jpg Assistant manager or assistant to the general manager???? FALSE. Chief Executive supervising batting stances.
  7. I'm not sure that it's a safe assumption that a 35 year old shortstop is going to come in and be an elite fielder. Were you one who 'wasn't sure' Betancourt would be a terrible defender? I get the hesitation to accept scouting reports, since you're not familiar with the player(s), but you could change that simply by watching some highlights of Gonzalez.
  8. Its not my money If you buy tickets or merchandise, you're absolutely contributing to the funds used to sign players. Mark A. isn't just cutting personal checks http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I look forward to seeing some of Aoki.
  9. Hawpe's also a really bad defender though. I thought you meant Hawpe as a bench LH bat.
  10. The defensive upgrade will not be easy to point Assuming you meant "to point to", I completely disagree. I'm astounded by how many people seem to be playing coy about Gonzalez after doing the same thing about Betancourt. The reports on both players aren't voodoo black magic. Betancourt really is an awful defender at SS, & Gonzalez really is a very good one.
  11. I agree with CHW, I think it was sarcasm.
  12. We shall see about Gonzalez' defense. Sounds familiar... we shall 'saw' Betancourt's defense, and guess what? No one was exaggerating it. Same is true for Gonzalez. People need to stop believing that stats are just used to spread misinformation. Gonzalez is one of the best SS defenders in the league/world.
  13. I'd like to thank the radio host for breaking this huge and legitimate news story [/blue] I think it's crazy, too... in case that wasn't clear http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  14. I know it won't happen but what about trading Wolf to replace some of the missing farm system and signing Oswalt to a 1 year contract? Would that make any sense? It would depend on the prospect return on Wolf. If it was worthwhile, I'd be all about that idea.
  15. Prince will probably only sign somewhere he can actually play 1B, not DH just yet... otherwise the Yankees would be my new pick for where he winds up.
  16. Dekker's #18 in the country (#5 at small forward) on Rivals. Wasn't as highly regarded when he committed to the Badgers, but has improved dramatically over the past year or so (lucky us). ... One of the 4 guys picked Dekker as one of his five. Top 5 in the country! Yeah, thanks guys... I thought I remembered Dekker absolutely blowing up, prospect-status-wise.
  17. Funny how much it makes you think of the Garza-Young swap, since that was a hot topic of discussion on the ML forum not too long ago. And I agree, more trades like this would be really fun to see. So does this make Hughes expendable while his value is down I'd have to guess Brian Cashman has already been contacted about Hughes. Because, yes, I don't see where he fits with the Yankees at this point. I should say that I don't know if he has any option years remaining; Cot's lists him with 4.113 years of total MLB service time.
  18. Am I remembering correctly that Dekker is like... uber-top-rated? Like one of the best recruits UW basketball has ever had?
  19. Not exactly a transaction, but per Adam McCalvy...
  20. Just noticed that Adam McCalvy's blog post on this includes a Bianchi player pic: http://mlblogsbrewersbeat.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/ap100226186920.jpg?w=99&h=150
  21. Yep, #3 pre-2011 & #4 pre-2010. Would people have felt this was a bad deal if the Mariners had gotten 22-yo Prince Fielder for 22-yo Michael Pineda? Or is Campos the tipping point for those who really think NYY wins the trade, big-time? Just curious. Montero's been projected as needing to move off C by almost everything I've read on him over the past two+ seasons, so I don't think viewing him as a catcher is very realistic. But his bat is legit enough that he's still an incredible piece to add. I dunno, seems like a pretty decent trade for both sides.
  22. That was my first thought, too. Well, after 'Wow, huge trade.' And as trwi7 notes, the thread title isn't the full trade: Michael Pineda + Jose Campos to NYY, Jesus Montero + Hector Noesi to SEA
  23. Well, yes, but the question remains 'does RRR understand splits'? Like I said, I don't have a player I hate, so Loe is my guess for the lightning rod the masses will turn against, pitchforks in hand. Average-Brewers-fan-Joe isn't going to care if the reason Loe is getting lit up is that he's being used against big LH bats. Hoping I'm wrong, but who's the better guess on the roster at this point? Maybe K-Rod just since he's so expensive.
  24. Can I ask to anyone that's either posting in or reading this thead -- are you looking for a stat to describe a player's value in a given timeframe, or are you looking for a stat to describe true talent? Because it seems like a lot of the discussion so far here about WAR, & specifically its use of UZR, really is calling for a defensive stat that depicts true talent. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but that's the general sense I'm getting. And I think if that's the kind of stat that people are after, I'm not sure it can be found. One thing that stands out from this discussion is that the statistics we have to describe offense are pretty well-understood & reasonably accurate portrayals of production or value... and the defensive stats we have currently aren't. I honestly don't think WAR is used as a be-all, end-all stat as much as people sometimes complain it is. It gives a pretty solid idea of what kind of production a player turned in in a given season, but if you don't find it a good relative measure, use a good offensive stat plus a well-informed scouting report+eyeball test on defense.
