  1. Very nice recovery by the Badgers, and like jjfanec (post #136) mentioned, they've definitely found their identity/identities on offense. Guys don't seem to just be hovering around the 3-pt. line all game anymore. And the more Bruiser & Berggren play, the better they look. They still don't have 'the horses', if you will, but they've begun to execute well on a routine basis, & that's Bo Ryan basketball.
  2. Yeah, if Rickie goes down again I'd guess it'll be Green getting most of the reps at 2B.
  3. Wow, that 'piece' is startlingly unprofessional & juvenile. Not to mention moderately researched at best.
  4. That was me, posted here. Hmm, so I guess if those prospects make it to MLB we shouldn't pitch them on the road in April/May or September/October? I'm not sure a good case can be made that players are hurt more by the cold weather in WI and the rest of the Midwest league to start the season more than they are all of the lost development due to rainouts and cancelled games from our SE affiliates over the last 2 seasons. Every 7 inning games costs our kids ABs or IP, every lost game even more. Count me in the camp that couldn't care less about cold weather games, which incidentally I've always felt favored the pitchers more than the hitters anyway. THANK YOU for identifying yourself & solving my 'mystery'. You have no idea how much that was bugging me... I actually searched around the forums again today with no luck.
  5. I have nothing to add, other than that this post is awesome.
  6. Greinke has elite stuff but he also throws more bad pitches in a game than any other Brewer pitcher To keep the discussion fair, especially if you want to nitpick with Ennder's comment, I think you should have to say "threw... in 2011" instead of "throws". Unless you can back it up with a significant sample size (not meaning just familiar stats, could be simply factual observation) showing that this is something Greinke "does", as opposed to "did in 2011," I don't think that's either a useful or fair way to talk about his performance, skillset, or value.
  7. Hmm... I did copy & paste the checkmarks, let me try a different icon... went with a plus sign
  8. To dig into this a bit further, I think you start with the Brewers' bench candidates: Green, Kottaras, Aoki/Plush/Gomez, Izturis, Conrad, Schafer, Wheeler I don't think I'm missing anyone there, could be though. Kottaras, Conrad & Green are the closest things to power bench bats the Brewers have right now, which to me is the #1 offensive element of a bench. Izturis & Green should handle the IF pretty well for reserves, Kottaras and Aoki/Plush/Gomez all seem to be givens to make the 25-man. Schafer & Wheeler will probably be sent to Nashville, & if the Brewers like what they see from Conrad's bat, Green might wind up repeating AAA as well. Overall a decent bench group for the Brewers, but nothing to me that screams 'optimal bench'
  9. I see the Tigers drivin' round town with the Fielder we love and I'm like best of luck to yoouuu... Sorry, that's all I've got there
  10. At catcher, I think the Brewers are probably third out of three already, even if Hanigan does wind up playing the bulk of the season (he's listed as the starter at C on the Reds' website, so I just went with that). Hanigan's defense (iirc) is notably better than Lucroy's. If Mesoraco does indeed wind up winning the job & performing well, then the Brewers are just that much further behind at catcher. Basically I think you have 3 very evenly matched teams Yep, even though the motivation for doing this was that it seems to be a close, three-horse race, I was surprised just how close the decisions are at each position, & how close the tallies wound up, overall.
  11. I think Latos is really getting punished for having been developed & brought up by the Pads. His ERA will inevitably jump now that half his games are in an extreme hitters' park, after playing half in the most extreme pitchers' park. But the guy can pitch, he's not just some fluky product of his park. Like I said, Greinke/Latos is a tossup for me, & Carpenter would be the clear choice if not for age & injury history.
  12. 1) Probably correct, but I think any objective comparison of those two at this point would have to be largely based on injury/durability... and Yo's major injury had nothing to do with his arm or delivery. Much like with Carpenter, the Cards have the most talented player of the three teams, but durability cuts into his value. And actually Wainwright is a great guy to discuss here, when healthy he's been that much better than either Gallardo or Cueto. I probably could've given the nod to the Cards there. Either way, all three teams are very close at SP1 & SP2, there's not much separation there. 2) Not really, to be honest. I almost left the Bench line blank & didn't pick any winner. All I did was dig around each team's official site's roster & depth chart pages; I probably compared four or five guys on each team, & would've missed any NRI guys (Izturis/Conrad) the Reds or Cards have signed. Even so, none of these three benches really looks all that great or terrible, and I think the Brewers have quite a bit of depth there, so I went with them. Another close category that I probably have zero business picking a 'winner' for. http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/smile.gif
  13. Yep, I weighed in (very unscientifically & unmathematically) other considerations... like age, durability, possible suspension in Braun's case, change in ballparks, etc. Like I would say that Carpenter is the best of those three #2 starters, but given that he's entering his age-37 season, has averaged well over 200 IP for the past three seasons, & is pretty susceptible to injury, I went with Latos. And I didn't have Latos ahead of Greinke by much, if anything, that's probably closer to a coin-flip, and the #2 SP is probably the closest category amongst all three teams. And on Freese, I get that he was insanely hot in the postseason & flashed some next-level hitting ability, but he's probably not much more durable at this point than Rolen or Ramirez, which is saying something. Freese was my 2nd place third baseman, if that matters to anyone.
  14. Still working on formatting it & finishing it up, sorry for the delay... stupid coding/tags

  16. Since there's a relatively clear-cut top tier of three teams in the Central for 2012, I thought comparing them position-by-position might be fun. For quick help, I used the depth charts from the official sites for the Reds & Cards. The checkmarks next to player names indicates which team 'wins' each category; I did my best to avoid any homer bias. Bear with me... for some reason I can't get the code function/tags to format properly without first posting this mess & then going back to edit. See next post for the chart.
  17. Happy 77th birthday to Ueck!
  18. Also, I think it's exciting that the Brewers have a chance to add maybe even three more B grade (Sickels's grades, I mean) caliber players with their first three picks in the upcoming draft. Then this farm system would actually start looking like a good farm system again. I believe it was Patrick (colbyjack) who said that Bradley said he's been assigned to Brevard County. Iirc Patrick also said that the same was going to be true for Jungmann... but now I need to go search & find out what I'm making up from poor memory & what's actually real. I'm 99.9% sure Bradley (or someone) tweeted or said that he (Bradley, specifically) was heading to BC. EDIT: Couldn't find anything more than a blog with a random mention that Bradley's said he's starting at BC. Looking more...EDIT 2: No luck. I swear I read on Brewerfan's forums that Bradley mentioned (in an interview maybe?) he'd be starting at BC
  19. Kam Loe was actually pretty good on the season as a whole last year, I'm surprised he's wound up as a candidate for so many as "Most Improved"
  20. There are many things from that 2011 Brewers team I try to forget... I think the last two posts here may have hit on everything.
  21. Well it's semantics. When Sickels says Schafer would make a great 4th OF (Sickels being a guy who doesn't throw around adjectives like "great"), and when Morgan is only a starter in the big half of a platoon, I see the same definition of a player. Morgan has surpassed 500 PAs exactly once in his career, & only got 378 last season. That's not a starter; guys who are 'everyday players' get somewhere from 600-700 PAs (or more) on a season, & that's what I think of when I think "starter" in the context Sickels would be using it. But honestly none of this is really important to the question of 'will Schafer be a good MLB player?' I agree with you & think he will, and that he could well wind up being a better big-league hitter than Morgan. But if he's never really useful or at least passable against LHP, he won't wind up being better enough than Morgan to really concern ourselves with, just a nice role player. Either way, the Brewers are fortunate to have Schafer & have him so well developed. If Braun is indeed suspended & misses 50 games, Schafer could play a nice role in picking up the slack until Braun's return.
  22. On the one hand, I'm glad to see Melvin is apparently at least doing his due diligence on a guy like Oswalt. On the other hand, shelling out another $8M or so, just so you can possibly upgrade over Narveson ... I dunno. Don't get me wrong, talent-wise, Oswalt is a big upgrade over Narveson. I'm just not sure you'd get your full money's worth in hoping Oswalt gives you 190+ IP.
  23. The schedule page for the T-Rats has their first game (home opener) on April 5th. That's also the first game for the other three full-season affiliates, so I'm guessing it's Opening Day for all full-season MiLB leagues. Helena's site lists their first game on June 18th. Not sure if that's another blanket-policy (meaning, for all short-season leagues) opening day date or not.
  24. Unless he can't hit lefties much at all at the big-league level, which is entirely possible for Schafer. I think his '12 AAA time is going to be very important for his continued development. From Sickels, "excellent fourth outfielder" isn't some backhanded compliment.
  25. Yeah, if teams want to guarantee a 1.000 OPS plate appearance to Braun by walking him, I'm all for it. If your lineup isn't deep enough to produce out of the 5-6-7 spots, you have much bigger problems than worrying about whether Braun is IBB'd 5 times or 25 times in a season.
