Final: Albuquerque 8, @Nashville 6 Sounds End Winning Streak With 8-6 Loss Gamel Extends Hitting Streak To 13 Games Nashville Sounds NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds' six-game winning streak came to a halt with an 8-6 loss to the Las Vegas 51s in the third game of a four-game series on Sunday evening at Greer Stadium. With the loss and Memphis Redbirds win, Nashville (62-60) dropped to third in the PCL American Northern Division, trailing the division-leading Omaha Storm Chasers by 4 ½ games. The Sounds collected 12 hits in the game, led by designated hitter Erick Almonte going 3-for-5. Mat Gamel, Caleb Gindl, and Taylor Green all added two hits. Center fielder and leadoff hitter Logan Schafer went 0-for-3 with two walks to snap his 11-game hitting streak. Las Vegas starter and Toronto Blue Jays #1 prospect Kyle Drabek (3-2) scattered 11 hits and one walk for five runs (four earned) in 5 1/3 innings. All of his runs came in the first inning. The Sounds trailed 4-0 early in the top of the first inning after committing two throwing errors that led to three unearned runs. Nashville batted around in the next frame and scored and got five runs back to take a 5-4 lead. Left fielder Jordan Brown and Green collected one-out singles to get the rally started. Almonte brought home the first run on an infield groundout, which turned into a fielding error and Brown coming home to score. After Gamel extended his hitting streak to a season-high 13 games to load the bases, second baseman Eric Farris laced a two-run double down the third base line and into left field. The scoring in the frame concluded when Gindl knocked a two-run single to center field. Las Vegas left fielder Travis Snider tied the game at 5-5 in the third inning with a solo homer off over the wall in right center. The long ball was Snider's third of the season. The 51s went ahead for good at 8-5 in the top of the sixth inning. Third baseman Chris Woodward and second baseman Manny Mayorson chased Amaury Rivas from the game with singles. After reliever Sean Green came into the contest and induced ground out for the first out, right fielder Ricardo Nanita jacked a three-run homer just beyond the reach of Gindl over the right field wall. Nashville scored their final run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Brandon Boggs walked, moved to third on an Almonte single, and scored on a Gamel groundout. Right-hander Amaury Rivas pitched five plus innings, surrendering seven runs (four earned) on seven hits while striking out seven. The loss ties Rivas with Iowa's Jay Jackson for the most in the PCL. Green gave up one run in 2 2/3 innings while recording two strikeouts. Randy Flores finished the contest with scoreless 1 1/3 innings. The Sounds and 51s will continue their series at 7:05pm CT on Monday evening at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Josh Butler (7-6, 4.97) will take the mound against Las Vegas right-hander Chad Gaudin (0-0, 9.00). Nashville Box Score Schafer: 0-3, 2 BB Green: 2-2 (removed from game in 4th; made second throwing error in the 3rd) Gamel: 2-5 Farris: 1-4, 2B, BB, SB Gindl: 2-4, BB Martin Maldonado: 1-4 (threw out two attempted basestealers) Nashville Play-by-Play The Sounds got something going in the 9th, but couldn't muster more than one run: Nashville Bottom of the 9th Pitcher Change: Danny Farquhar replaces Winston Abreu. I'd like to see them go after Matsui. He never had a very drastic L/R split, & has actually hit LHP well so far this season (better than RHP). Perfect late-inning PH guy. I agree with KegStand, I'd much rather see Matsui than Lopez.
-
Is that his ceiling? His ceiling (imo) is probably a upper-.700s to low-.800s OPS hitter with solid (but not great) defense in CF. Here's part of Toby's profile of Schafer for Disciples of Uecker:
-
I think Schafer is the reason the Brewers were willing to move Komatsu for Hairston. Imo Schafer is going to be the 4th OF in Milwaukee for the next few seasons.

Impressions of Roenicke so far (part 2)
TooLiveBrew replied to PKBadger's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Well, Roenicke at least accepted he was wrong on Gomez. We've been making fewer dumb outs on the bases. I agree, he definitely showed the ability to correct these issues. I hope he continues to refine his craft. -
I agree. The Brewers wasted their chance to get Taylor Green up & acclimated. He'll be up & get a handful of Sept. callup PAs.
-
If Ben Sheets agrees to sign with the Brewers, I don't see why they'd pass him up on a MiLB contract.

This board is acting like it is a fact Lawrie is a sure-fire all-star who will hit 30 HR. I don't think it's a fact, I just believe that he's going to be very good. Physically he reminds me of Dan Uggla, but he's probably going to hit for a higher AVG than Uggla. Rasmus/Lawrie/Escobar is a pretty nice young offensive core for Toronto. I know you can't believe any scouting report absolutely, but when pretty much all the reports agree it's hard for me to ignore. Plus, he's obviously bulked up & is already loads stronger; I actually disagree & think he could (*could*) be a 30-HR guy right now or next season with enough playing time. Like I said, I really like Marcum & I doubt the Brewers are leading the division without him at this point. The starting staff is talented enough to go toe to toe with anyone when it's at full strength. It's just the approach to building a team I wonder about. Not that I'm disappointed with Marcum or not enjoying this team.

I don't think this has been posted here yet, apologies if it has: San Francisco is hosting Star Wars Day on an upcoming Sunday home game. The giveaway seems to be Brian Wilson in carbonite. I have to know whose idea this was. http://i.imgur.com/4nNMj.jpg

I just saw the highlights I just watched it... ball go far. I see absolutely zero wrong with anything Lawrie did after the GS. I love players that show that they're having fun, let's not turn into Cards fans here.
-
The least he could do is see Lawrie's immediate benefit and apply the possibility to Taylor Green. Sadly, that's not true (I wish it were). The least he could do is continue to do what he's done all season -- let Green hit really well in AAA & not call him up because... Casey McGehee? Nice to see Lawrie hit well, but he's going to be a very good hitter for a long time imo. Ultimately I think we'll regret this one, and I have actually become a full believer in Marcum, even though I had my doubts at the time of the trade (because I hadn't seen Marcum pitch, basically).
-
Yeah, me too. The Miller Park thing might hold more weight if the Cardinals could actually, you know, beat the Brewers in St. Louis. The Brewers are 20-11 there since 2008. I suppose they're stealing signs in Busch, too? Well, clearly the Brewers had the Cards' grounds crew re-adjust the way the wall down the LF line juts out tonight, so the Jon Jay double didn't score Theriot in the 2nd inning.

Your first place Pittsburgh Pirates
TooLiveBrew replied to Invader3K's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Pirates Acquire Lee, Ludwick To Bolster 2nd-Half Collapse What I actually like about this is that they went for guys that didn't cost much in the way of prospects. Sure, they 'made additions', but it seems like even the Pirates knew their time isn't quite here yet. If I had to bet, I'd guess they at least asked about Ubaldo Jimenez... at least, that's the kind of move I assume they were interested in. -
Final: @Helena 9, Missoula 4 Brewers Win 9-4 to Snap Streak By Nicholas Allen Seven is enough... The Brewers took advantage of four Missoula errors, scoring five unearned runs in the first four innings of a 9-4 victory over the Osprey at Kindrick Legion Field on Wednesday. The win snapped a seven-game losing-streak for Helena. The rest of the Brewers runs were scored without any additional help. In the sixth, Brewers' catcher Tyler Roberts singled with one out and scored with heady base running on Kenny Allison double off the centerfield wall. Roberts scored all the way from first. Allison's fellow Beaumont, Texan John Dishon capped the scoring with a blistering line-drive over the left field wall for a three-run homer and a 9-3 lead. Andy Moye (5-1) allowed eight hits and three earned runs over five innings, striking out five and walking one in the victory. Thomas Keeling followed with three innings, surrendering just one unearned run, two hits and one walk while striking out two. Sean Albury added a perfect ninth inning, striking out two in his 11th consecutive scoreless appearance to begin his professional career. The teams meet again tomorrow as the homestand concludes. Helena Box Score Roberts & Perker Berberet both went 2-4, with Berberet doubling once. Kenny Allison went 2-2 with a double & two walks. Ben McMahan had a single. Final: Nashville 5, @Reno 3 Sounds Put Up Five In First, Defeat Reno 5-3 Fiers Earns Fifth Win In Five Starts For Nashville Nashville Sounds RENO, Nev. - The Nashville Sounds continued to flourish in road action on Tuesday evening at Aces Ballpark, posting a 5-3 victory over Reno. With the win, the Sounds (59-59) drew back to the .500 mark for the first time since April 22nd, when they were 8-8. Nashville, which has won 13 of its last 17 contests away from Greer Stadium, has taken the first three games of the series against the Pacific Northern Division-leading Aces and will attempt to complete their third sweep of the year on Wednesday. First baseman Mat Gamel drove in three of the Sounds' five runs with a first-inning homer, while center fielder Logan Schafer (2-for-4) was one of three Nashville hitters to post a multiple-hit effort in the victory. Schafer continued his solid start to his Triple-A career; he has hit safely in 18 of his 19 PCL games, including 12 multi-hit efforts. Right-hander Mike Fiers (5-0) picked up his fifth win in five Triple-A starts, holding Reno to two unearned runs on five hits while striking out seven batters over 5 2/3 innings of work to lower his ERA to 1.42 for the Sounds. The Sounds got started quickly against Reno starter Kevin Mulvey, sending 11 batters to the plate and posting five runs in the top of the first inning. The first four Nashville batters all recorded singles against the right-hander, with the last two of those knocks by Eric Farris and Taylor Green driving in runs, before Gamel capped off the rally by belting his team-leading 25th home run of the year, a three-run shot to right that came on the first pitch he saw from Mulvey. The longball extended Gamel's hitting streak to nine games (15-for-39, .385), the longest active stretch among Nashville batters. Reno responded with a pair of runs in the home half of the frame to cut the Sounds' lead to 5-2. Ryan Langerhans and Juan Miranda contributed RBI singles against Fiers in the frame. Despite multiple scoring opportunities by both clubs (19 total runners were left on base in the contest), the score remained unchanged until the bottom of the seventh, when the Aces tacked on a run against Sounds reliever Daniel Meadows to pull within 5-3. In the Reno seventh, Langerhans singled with one out, stole second, and came plateward on Andy Tracy's RBI double off the left field wall. During the next at-bat, pinch-runner Angel Berroa broke for third on Meadows' 3-2 pitch to former Sound Cole Gillespie, who swung at the offering for strike three then was called for batter's interference as he contacted catcher Martin Maldonado as the backstop attempted to throw to third. The bizarre inning-ending double play got Meadows out of the jam with a two-run lead intact and led to the ejection of Reno manager Brett Butler. Mike McClendon worked into and out of a one-out, runners on the corners jam unscathed in the eighth before retiring the side in order in the ninth to secure the victory and nail down his team-leading seventh save of the year for Nashville. Mulvey (3-6) took the loss for the Aces after giving up five runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 frames. Nashville will look to wrap up a four-game series sweep in the teams' 3:05 p.m. CT matinee finale tomorrow afternoon. Right-hander Josh Butler (7-6, 4.78) will make the start for the Sounds to face Reno southpaw Zach Kroenke (8-2, 6.75). Nashville Box Score Schafer & Jordan Brown both went 2-4 with one walk. Green was 2-5. Gamel, Farris, Edwin Maysonet, & Fiers added a hit apiece. Caleb Gindl walked three times; Maldonado walked once. Nashville Play-by-Play A five-run 1st sure kicks a game off in style: Nashville Top of the 1st Logan Schafer singles on a ground ball to center fielder Ryan Langerhans. Jordan Brown singles on a line drive to left fielder Evan Frey. Logan Schafer to 2nd. Eric Farris singles on a bunt ground ball to third baseman Andy Tracy. Logan Schafer scores. Jordan Brown to 3rd. Final: Billings 2, @Helena 0 Billings Baffles Brewers By Nicholas Allen The Brewers' pitching was great on Tuesday at Kindrick Legion Field...but Billings was better. The Mustang pitching staff tossed its second straight gem in Helena, shutting out the Brewers and in the process ran its scoreless streak to 30 consecutive innings dating back to Auguest 6th in Great Falls. Billings starter Tony Cingrani sat down Helena in order in the first three innings and Mustang pitchers allowed only four Brewer baserunners. Billings allowed just one runner in scoring position as the Brewers fell in their seventh straight game, losing 2-0. Cole Green (1-1) earned the victory and James Allen recorded his seventh save for the Mustangs who were led offensively by Junior Arias' RBI triple and a solo home run by Nick O'Shea. Mike Strong (2-3) struck out 13 Billings Mustangs, nearly twice his previous career-high of seven, but received no run support. The Oklahoma State product pitched seven innings, allowing two earned runs while scattering six hits without walking a batter. Twice, Strong pitched out of a situation in which a Mustangs runner reached third base with no one out. Jacob Barnes pitched the final two scoreless innings, striking out three and surrendering just one hit. John Dishon and Perker Berberet combined for six of the Brewers seven hits in the series, each adding a single Tuesday. Dishon stole his 16th base of the season in the contest. Helena will welcome the Missoula Osprey for the final two games of the four-game homestand starting Wednesday. Helena Box Score Kenny Allison's single was the only other hit aside from Dishon's & Berberet's. Helena Play-by-Play Here's one of the aforementioned Houdini acts managed by Strong. This one ended his night with an exclamation point: Billings Top of the 7th Ryan Wright singles on a line drive to left fielder Benjamin McMahan. With Junior Arias batting, Ryan Wright steals (4) 2nd base, . Ryan Wright advances to 3rd, on throwing error by catcher Parker Berberet. Junior Arias strikes out swinging. Wisconsin fans, feel free to be less than excited about 2012 -- this is not an exciting Helena / Maryvale bunch. It's probably not going to be pretty. I guess I'll look forward to Walla, maybe Ramirez, maybe Yadiel Rivera. Honestly, there are some players that I can get excited about if I stop & think about it, but Helena & Maryvale have been pretty brutal so far.

AP story about tonight's game. My two favorite parts: Albert Pujols(notes) was 0 for 5 with no tough outs and missed a chance to end it in the ninth against LaTroy Hawkins(notes) (1-0), popping out to right with two on and two outs. ... Pujols declined to speak to reporters after the game. ... Pujols is 5 for 39 (.128) with no homers and three RBIs against the Brewers
