  1. Final: Cerveceritos 7, @DSL Indians 3 Cerveceritos Box Score The DSL crew plated seven runs in the first five innings, & had chased Indians' starter Eliezer Sanchez after just two. Three days shy of his 18th birthday, Jorge Ortega (6'1", 165) pitched five innings, & allowed two earned runs to notch his second win (2-0) of the season. In his last outing, Ortega went seven shutout innings of three-hit baseball. Today he cruised through three innings, but ran into trouble in the 4th, allowing both earned runs. A throwing error in the 5th added another run to the scoreboard, but obviously wasn't charged to Ortega. Everyone's favorite nickname-eluder Orlando Arcia (6'0, 165) was the offensive star, going 2-4 with 4 RBI at shortstop. No-nickname-needing Yonki Hernandez (5'10", 160) had an excellent game as the leadoff man & centerfielder: 2-3 with two walks and a theft of third base. Catcher Deivi Mejia (6'0, 195) also went 2-4 with a double, but added one CS. Third baseman Joan Abreu (5'11", 180) had two singles; DH Raul Mondesi, Jr. (5'10, 182) & leftfielder Dionis Hinojosa (6'1, 180) had one single apiece, with Hinjosa adding three stolen bases. Second baseman Raphachel Colatosti (6'1", no weight listed) walked once & scored a run out of the 9-hole. Hinojosa's three steals today pushed his season total to 8/10 attempts. Either the Indians' catcher had a noodle arm, or Dionis is a real weapon on the basepaths. He stole third base twice, just because that's cooler than only doing it once. There may be something to the Indians' battery not controlling the running game well, however. Arcia, Colatosti, Abreu, & Hernandez also each swiped a base. Pedro Peguero (6'6", 215), who turns 18 in August, allowed just one hit, one walk, and struck out three over two innings. Doni Arias (6'3", 187), 19 in July, closed up the game with 2 IP, 0 H, 1 BB & 0 K. Cerveceritos play-by-play Only getting one run in the top of the 1st was actually a small disaster. They had the bases loaded with one out, & couldn't add a single run: DSL Brewers Top of the 1st Yonki Hernandez singles on a ground ball to center fielder Joel Mejia. Joan Abreu singles on a ground ball to left fielder Victor De Jesus. Yonki Hernandez to 2nd. Orlando Arcia singles on a fly ball to center fielder Joel Mejia. Yonki Hernandez scores. Joan Abreu to 3rd. With Jose Pena batting, Orlando Arcia steals (3) 2nd base. Jose Pena strikes out swinging, catcher Juan De La Cruz to first baseman David Matos. Deivi Mejia hit by pitch. Juan De Leon grounds into a force out, pitcher Eliezer Sanchez to catcher Juan De La Cruz. Joan Abreu out at home. Orlando Arcia to 3rd. Deivi Mejia to 2nd. Juan De Leon to 1st. Raul Mondesi strikes out swinging. But they cashed in during the next frame, when "El Pirata" Arcia (I'm using it until we come up with a good one for him) unloaded the bases with a one-out double into centerfield: DSL Brewers Top of the 2nd Dionis Hinojosa grounds out, pitcher Eliezer Sanchez to first baseman David Matos. Raphachel Colatosti walks. With Yonki Hernandez batting, Raphachel Colatosti steals (2) 2nd base. Yonki Hernandez walks. Joan Abreu singles on a bunt ground ball to third baseman Amauri Castillo. Raphachel Colatosti to 3rd. Yonki Hernandez to 2nd. Orlando Arcia doubles (2) on a fly ball to center fielder Joel Mejia. Raphachel Colatosti scores. Yonki Hernandez scores. Joan Abreu scores. Jose Pena walks. Deivi Mejia singles on a fly ball to right fielder Felix Lora. Orlando Arcia scores. Jose Pena to 2nd. Juan De Leon grounds into double play, second baseman Manuel Boscan to shortstop Yonathan Mendoza to first baseman David Matos. Deivi Mejia out at 2nd. Fast-forward to the 7th: Peguero had to wriggle off the hook in after retiring the side in order the previous frame: DSL Brewers Top of the 7th Pitcher Change: Edward Estrella replaces Estevenson Encarnacion. Juan De Leon grounds out, pitcher Edward Estrella to first baseman David Matos. Raul Mondesi singles on a fly ball to left fielder Victor De Jesus. Dionis Hinojosa flies out to center fielder Joel Mejia. Raphachel Colatosti flies out to right fielder Felix Lora.
  2. Yes, Alex... I'll take "I'm actually spending my Friday night doing this" for 300. I don't mind at all, in fact, I really enjoy following the minors. But I had to laugh at myself once I considered the circumstances. Hope Fenway was still somewhat enjoyable tonight, I can sense that they're going to win for you tomorrow... unless they get rained out. I'll start off with the DSL Brewers, who I think should really be called the Cerveceros.
  3. Also it's not like pounding the strike zone is a bad thing but the way he's been doing it, it makes me wonder if he has command to hit corners. He's burned off corners many times this season with the FB, including yesterday. The example I can remember is getting Soto looking in the bottom of the second, but that probably wasn't the only one from yesterday's game alone.
  4. Yeah, pitchers don't pitch at a 3.00 ERA or whatever it is you want all season. It's the way a 162-game season goes. 5 of his first 9 starts are about what should have been expected, performance-wise. Prior to this most recent, wind-blowing-out-at-Wrigley start where the other (good) SP also gave up a lot of runs, his past 4 starts netted cumulative rates of: 3.33 ERA 10.33 K/9 1.66 BB/9 31/5 K/BB That's just damn good pitching, & this hub-bub is basically people overreacting to his most recent start not going well. Naturally there was no 'Greinke is a disappointment' thread during the stretch of his previous 4 starts. And once he goes out & pitches well again, this will subside. Look for this thread to get bumped just about every time he has a bad outing, though, because apparently Greinke is different from other top SP in baseball, & he's not allowed to have a bad game... ever. And like I said earlier, there won't be a thread like this on Marcum when he inevitably cools off, because he'll have built up a large enough sample in his season ERA to hide it.
  5. Walla's slash line certainly improved last season, but his 2009 wasn't good at all. He still struck out a lot, and didn't really cut his K rate much. Hopefully he can keep the whiffs down this season & start to drive the ball more. He's still very young. I'm going to dust off a seat & hop on the bandwagon... hopefully his tools start to show.
  6. When Marcum inevitably struggles during the course of the season, we won't see a thread started about it because his ERA will still look good, since it'll just be later in the year. I'm with logan, if you're on the ledge on Greinke, go ahead & jump. Not worth worrying about.
  7. They're winning in spite of his in-game strategy, save the shifts. Relative to other big-league managers, I think I'd go with a D or D+.
  8. This series & roadtrip makes me lament the fact that Darwin Barney plays for the Cubs & not Red Sox. That name would be instant gold out there.
  9. No. Thornburg is pretty clearly ready to be challenged. If you're going to draft college arms, I believe you also have to be ready to challenge them. But I think AndThat is right that Thornburg is being kept with the club for the first-half postseason chase. I can't remember which thread he mentioned that in, but iirc it was him.
  10. Even the two recent seasons of mid-.800s OPS plus athleticism is an upgrade over McGehee. Not to mention the home parks they play in. To say Wright "hasn't been good for a while" just isn't objective. I know he hasn't hit well yet this season, but he's been clearly better than McGehee.
  11. "We're still in the negotiation process, & that's all I can say about it right now"
  12. "(Arizona State) was one of the better games I've thrown. I just didn't get the win." That's not encouraging. He looked pretty hittable against ASU.
  13. Either there's more to the story that they aren't telling us or this is disciplinary (IMO). I think you hit the nail on the head with this. This reeks of being disciplinary imo.
  14. Final (game two): @Huntsville 3, Birmingham 1 Huntsville Box Score On his 26th birthday, Michael Fiers turned in five and two-thirds innings of sharply pitched baseball for the Stars. Happy Birthday, Michael! His final line was 5.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K. Thanks to Fiers, reliever Lucas Luetge was only needed to record one out to close out the 6th inning, and Jim Henderson shut down the Barons' bats in the 7th for the save. Luetge allowed a single before recording the final out of the 6th, and then walked the leadoff man in the 7th. Henderson then came on & slammed the door, striking out two & not allowing a baserunner. Huntsville scored one run in the first, and two in the second. Thanks largely to Fiers & Henderson, they didn't need any more offense. Logan Schafer stretched that hitting streak to 13 games, singling to lead off the bottom of the 1st. He also reached on an error, and finished 1-3 with a run scored. Steffan Wilson, Brandon Jones, Angel Gonzalez, Anderson De La Rosa, & Lee Haydel added the only other hits for the Stars... all singles. Gonzalez & Hainley Statia scored the other two runs, with De La Rosa & Sean Halton (sac fly) plating the only two RBI. Statia scored on a fielding error on a ball in play off the bat of Schafer for the unearned run. Erik Komatsu also played the second half of the doubleheader, but finished this one 0-3. Huntsville Play-by-Play After Birmingham brought in a righty pinch-hitter to face the lefty Luetge, manager Mike Guerrero countered with Henderson. Here's how Jim shut down the rally in the 7th: Birmingham Top of the 7th Seth Loman walks. Offensive Substitution: Pinch hitter Jon Gilmore replaces Alden Carrithers. Pitcher Change: Jim Henderson replaces Lucas Luetge. Jon Gilmore called out on strikes. Greg Paiml grounds into a force out, shortstop Angel Gonzalez to second baseman Hainley Statia. Seth Loman out at 2nd. Greg Paiml to 1st. Offensive Substitution: Pinch hitter Josh Phegley replaces Jared Price. Josh Phegley strikes out swinging, catcher Anderson De La Rosa to first baseman Sean Halton. Huntsville Gameday
  15. Final (game one): @Huntsville 8, Birmingham 3 Huntsville Box Score The first seven Huntsville batters reached base safely en route to a five-run first inning, & the Stars never gave back the lead. Starter Wily Peralta pitched seven strong innings, good for a complete game since it was the first half of a doubleheader. He wasn't charged an earned run, thanks to two errors from shortstop Angel Gonzalez... and one from Peralta himself. Gonzalez compensated by leading the way for the Stars offense, going 3-3 with two doubles, a walk, one RBI, & two runs scored. His doubles were the only extra-base hits for Huntsville. Peralta's final line: 7 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K. Logan Schafer extended his hitting streak to 12 games, going 1-2 with a walk, stolen base, & two runs scored. Erik Komatsu played in his first game since June 11th, and went 1-3 with a walk & a run. Sean Halton (two RBI) & Steffan Wilson (two runs) were both 2-4; Martin Maldonado was 3-4 with two RBI. Sergio Miranda went 1-3, and Lee Haydel was 0-2 with a walk. Huntsville Play-by-Play Here's that 1st inning: Huntsville Bottom of the 1st Logan Schafer walks. Erik Komatsu singles on a ground ball to pitcher Hector Santiago. Erik Komatsu to 2nd. Logan Schafer advances to 3rd, on throwing error by pitcher Hector Santiago. Sean Halton singles on a soft line drive to right fielder Kenneth Williams. Logan Schafer scores. Erik Komatsu scores. Sean Halton advances to 2nd, on fielding error by right fielder Kenneth Williams. Steffan Wilson singles on a ground ball to center fielder Brandon Short. Sean Halton to 3rd. With Angel Gonzalez batting, wild pitch by Hector Santiago, Steffan Wilson to 2nd. With Angel Gonzalez batting, Sean Halton scores on a balk. Steffan Wilson advances to 3rd on a balk. Angel Gonzalez walks. Martin Maldonado singles on a line drive to center fielder Brandon Short. Steffan Wilson scores. Angel Gonzalez to 2nd. Sergio Miranda singles on a ground ball to left fielder Tyler Kuhn. Angel Gonzalez to 3rd. Martin Maldonado to 2nd. Lee Haydel grounds into a force out, second baseman Alden Carrithers to shortstop Greg Paiml. Angel Gonzalez scores. Martin Maldonado to 3rd. Sergio Miranda out at 2nd. Lee Haydel to 1st. Matt Cline grounds into double play, shortstop Greg Paiml to second baseman Alden Carrithers to first baseman Christian Really could've been much worse for the Barons. Huntsville Gameday
  16. I didn't see any sarcasm directed at Wolf. I should've just let Pack Attack speak for himself.
  17. "You know RR wouldn't want to hurt anyones feelings" is what read as dripping with sarcasm to me
  18. Again, Kottaras was Wolf's catcher last year, and is his good friend. Wolf had nothing to do with Nieves being on the roster. Only the fact that Lcuroy isn't catching him, and really that's all Roenicke's decision too.I thought it was obvious that Pack Attack was being sarcastic, blue font or no blue font
  19. “We are pretty far apart,” he said, making it clear he does not want to reveal the team’s proposal and his counter off. “I just don’t want to sell myself short. If they really want me bad enough, they will really come up on the offer.” See ya later, kid
  20. http://i.imgur.com/xWqAm.png Glad that George is back.
  21. Just saw this on reddit: Beer Brewing Bender Awesome.
  22. Incredible story. Thanks for linking that http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  23. Ron Roenicke's BAC numbers when he's decided to start Nieves?
