  1. I would like to complain. There are unwritten rules that managers should not be idiots, right? Probably not, but there *should* be. Screw it, I'm officially announcing that there are unwritten rules about managers (they're not written, so who can fact-check me?). One is that they aren't allowed to be knuckleheads that don't grasp the current offensive environment, and that it's not 1938. Teams can score runs in bunches, and 5 runs isn't an insurmountable lead. Also, shut up, Mike Quade. You are sounding more & more like an idiot.
  2. Rickie Weeks is Park Place with 4 houses on it, Ryan Braun is Boardwalk with a hotel. Carlos Gomez is the luxury tax space stuck in between. As if "sabometrics" as a username hadn't won me over. You, sir, are welcome here.
  3. Like I said, I'm not making any outright accusations No, you're making indirect accusations that aren't based in any kind of fact. Like someone else said in this thread, Yo is struggling... it doesn't need to be due to his Colombian cartel connections or whatever.
  4. Thanks Patrick. I hope these are the kinds of contributions/updates you can continue to lend to Brewerfan. I think we'll gladly send some traffic PG's way http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  5. I don't want to start any rampant speculation, but I still have that robbery during the wee hours of the morning in a less than desirable neighborhood last summer in the back of my mind. I sure hope that he doesn't have any personal issues that are affecting his play. He was robbed = he has personal issues? I... I don't... nevermind.
  6. I would imagine skipping a start & throwing a bullpen session could accomplish finding that delivery repetition/arm slot, without the possible/likely insult of sending Yo to AAA for a game or two.
  7. Agreed on the username. Now tell your team to stop beating our team. It's getting annoying.
  8. I'm going off what Betancourt has done for the Brewers this season - and he's been a pleasent surprise. This is all about being comfortable settling for really poor hitting. Like I said before, if you're ok with a low .600s OPS, no evidence or opinion is going to mean anything to you. 've asked multiple times for specific plays so I could go rewatch on MLB.tv - nothing. I've asked the critics who was a better option that has played better than him this season - nothing. I don't really know why anyone should have to bring up specific plays. If you haven't noticed the numerous plays where Betancourt looks like he has concrete feet, then I would surmise you haven't been able to watch many of the games this season. That, or difficulty in separating what is good defensive shifting v. what is good defensive individual execution.
  9. Yep, I haven't watched any games and I am just a slave to WAR, you got me. Wait -- they PLAY games? I was under the impression that bloggers just ran numbers simulations. Interesting. I'll have to check this out.
  10. Not sure if the radar gun at Fox Cities Stadium is working properly or not... but if it is, Thornburg's fastball was operating in the 88-91 mph range today (highest I saw was 91). Whether that's simply due to the cooler weather (appx. 45° F), mechanics being off slightly, or anything else, I don't know. His velocity was just noticeably slower today. He got several Quad Cities players to go up the ladder for strikeouts with the FB, but as you can see in the box score, his command wasn't there for him as much today.
  11. The thing I don't get is how you could watch Alcides last year and think that Yuni is not better than what he gave us last year. What I don't get is how anyone could watch both players in the field & think that Betancourt is anywhere nearly as valuable at this point. Even if you're going to use errors, which is a terrible way to evaluate defense, Betancourt made 18 last season. EDIT: I think the main problem is expectations & what people are realistically willing to accept in terms of production. If a .605 OPS, along with very, very little range in the field is 'pretty good so far', then I don't think any amount of objectivity or evidence is going to change anyone's mind.
  12. He is not a good player. But he is not as bad as people make him out to be. What kills me about this thread is how badly people want to disagree about this. Betancourt sucks. I think everyone can agree with that.
  13. I have been saying that all along. He is going to hit and he is doing just that. That average is getting up now to around where I expect him to be (.270-.280) A slash line of .259/.284/.321/.605 is so incredibly easy to replace. This guy may not deserve the wrath of 10,000 BF.net suns, but he absolutely does suck.
  14. Yeah, that was honestly my first reaction to this news. I didn't realize there was a 7-day DL.
  15. I think you have to have a catcher with a really good arm for the snap throws to be worthwhile. Who's the last guy the Brewers had that had a cannon? Blanco? Certainly not anyone on the roster right now.
  16. Tried the poutine tonight. It was absolutely terrible. Not only would I never get it again (esp. at $7), but I would actively steer people away from getting it. That's how bad it was. The gravy was so bad, I just don't even understand why they bothered putting it on the menu. Do it right, or don't do it at all. The gravy almost had a chocolatey flavor to it. Just horrible.
  17. McGehee sprained his thumb on the final play. I'd guess he'll just miss a game or two, but we'll see. Since "sprain" is injury terminology for "he didn't break it", we'll definitely have to wait & see. Could wind up being nothing, could wind up being a partial tear to a ligament. Casey strikes me as one bad mutha- shut yo mouth... and he looked like he was in considerable pain. I hope it's not serious.
  18. This morning on the Larry Meiller show: 11am
  19. I really don't see [Kotsay] getting any starts once Hart is back. If Hart needs a day off Morgan or Boggs would get the nod because of better fielding. You overestimate Roenicke. I think Kotsay will continue to be ahead of Boggs on the depth chart, but I hope to be proven wrong. Heck, I also think there's a decent chance Kotsay will still be ahead of Morgan, in terms of backing up the corner spots & pinch hitting. In reality, Kotsay & Almonte should be released. Not sure what will happen in the Roenicke reality, though.
  20. The contact play sucks imo because it's too absolute. I'd much rather let a runner exercise his own judgment on whether or not he can score, than to dictate to any runner that he should go just because. And really? Sacrifice a runner at 3B to stay out of the double play?
  21. I just had Two Women last night, and I was very impressed. It's a different breed of Pilsner than I'm used to; it pours a light to medium copper with lots of malt character and moderate bitterness, but it has a nice biscuity quality and some grassy hop flavors. I'm still disappointed I'll never get to try the old Two Women, but this one is a very good example of a style that isn't often made well by American craft brewers. I really liked Two Women as well. I didn't realize there was a new v. old version, but what I had (new) was quite good.
  22. Have to plug this one... haven't had it in a while, but it was great -- Layer Cake Malbec. I wish I could remember which vintage I had, because it was stunningly good. the $6 bottles are most always nasty Not necessarily at all. If you're lucky enough to have a Trader Joe's in your area, not only do they have great selection & prices, but their wine staff tends to be knowledgeable. Even without a Trader Joe's, you can easily find good wine under $10/bottle. there's a lot of fish down here in Southern Texas, and i know enough to serve white wine, but what kind? It really depends on personal taste, even with more formal pairing suggestions/'rules'. I definitely prefer a dry white wine (Sauvingnon Blanc, many times) to pair with seafood. But Sauv. Blanc is really good to pair with a lot of different foods... I guess I'd suggest starting there as long as you like it.
  23. I debated between that one & Qualude. Yours is probably better.
