  1. Yeah, FIB4, I'm trying to think of a good 'starter' craft brew... Honestly New Glarus's Spotted Cow comes to mind. Has a little bit of sweetness to it, kind of creamy (it's a cream ale), pretty neutral. Adam, do you know whether you'd be looking for a sweeter (aka maltier) brew, or something drier or less sweet (like the excellent Ranger IPA FIB4 mentioned)? Wherever you're located, Adam, try going to a nearby craft brewpub. They usually do sampler trays of most or all the beers they brew. Are you in Milwaukee? There are several good choices there. Heck, if you explained that you're just starting to explore beer, I'd bet any good bartender would let you sample just about anything he/she had on tap, brewpub or not. Since beer is such a matter of personal taste, you really have to just dive in & try lots of different kinds. Even though this thread is a bit of a monster at this point, there have been a lot of good discussions about specific brews in here. Beeradvocate is a pretty cool resource; membership to the site is completely free. Here's the Spotted Cow page. Honestly most of the reviews using technical terminologies are way over my head, but you can get a pretty good idea of whether or not a beer is worth trying based on the letter grades. Anything in the B range or better is usually pretty good.
  2. I'm still confused as to how this is "in the interests of keeping Pat Egan in the organization". I get that other teams probably wouldn't put in a claim on him, but do you mean that you think Baltimore might just refuse taking Egan back?
  3. Egan was a Rule 5 pick. If he's not on the 25-man roster all season, the Brewers have to offer him back to Baltimore.
  4. Nice, easy win for the Badgers against an opponent that was largely predicted to win this game. Great 2nd half all around. It really wasn't easy, which makes it all the more impressive imo. I always feel the sign of a really good team is to be able to just pull away in what was previously a closely-fought game, and that's exactly what the Badgers did today. Aside from team height, they probably won't see a more intensely pressuring defensive team the rest of the way. The Badgers were favored and were probably picked by 80% of those who made out a bracket. Belmont was a trendy pick for an upset, though I'm shocked Princeton wasn't with their history of upsets. So on one hand, Belmont wasn't a trendy pick, coming in at only your highly scientific calculation of 20%. Except that they *were* a trendy pick, at a whopping 20%. I guarantee you at least 20% of people picked Princeton to win, but I doubt much of it had to do with the ghosts of Pete Carril's teams.
  5. I can't wait to see what guys are promoted to the states. Ditto. The Brewers seem to have been pretty busy in signing these guys over the past year.
  6. Good to hear. The work you guys do on these updates is so, so appreciated.
  7. I'm not necessarily concerned that he's not walking in ST. Obviously he's been working with Dale extensively on his swing, so the last thing he should be doing when he needs to get used to new mechanics is looking to walk. That said, I seriously doubt he'll improve much. He might hit his magical mark of a .260 AVG this season. Maybe a slash line of .260/.310/.370/.680. If he hits any better than that, combined with his defense, the Brewers will be in decent shape in CF. I still think Dickerson should take at least the majority of PAs against RHPs, and would be fully in favor of a platoon (although there's really no evidence that Gomez can hit LHP better than RHP in his career splits so far). Maybe the Brewers can petition Selig's office to let Gomez be the DF for Braun or Hart.
  8. http://www.presstelegram....s/ci_17622472?source=rss He was 41. He'd had strokes in 2007 & 2008, and had reached the point of being unable to talk. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif R.I.P.
  9. Nice work on compiling these rosters lists, CWH. The only feedback I have is that Dickerson might be a better fit on the "probably out" list after colliding with the Panda a couple days ago.
  10. That was from yesterday, unless you saw it somewhere else. Also yesterday, on the blog, Hunt still said 4-6 weeks for Schafer. I'm not sure what to trust. Maybe we can just start saying 3-6 weeks for Schafer http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  11. Really? I'm still waiting for Dickerson to show something. He hasn't even homered in a Brewer uniform yet, and he's been outplayed by both Boggs and Reed in a big way this spring. If I'm in charge and the season starts today, Dickerson is going to Nashville. From Monday. Haven't heard anything more about him yet.
  12. I have to say, both Roenicke's awareness of & comfort level with MiLB Brewers has been impressive & a welcome change of pace.
  13. Yeah, and I can definitely see Lawrie (who some feel hasn't proven himself since he doesn't have any gaudy MiLB slash lines) wanting to take the approach of just driving the snot out of the ball, which he's done so far. For financial reasons, I doubt the Jays have him on their opening day 25-man, but I bet they'll call him up around May or so, if they think he's ready, in order to squeeze out an extra season of salary control. Besides, Lawrie hasn't had problematic BB rates thus far in the minors. He hasn't been Rickey Henderson part II or anything, but nothing that raises a red flag.
  14. Latest I can find is from yesterday's manager's briefing: Roenicke said RF Corey Hart (oblique) took some dry swings Monday and may be a week away from playing. However, the same story says Gamel could be ready to play by today, so hopefully he'd be available over Kotsay.
  15. An acquaintance of mine (Dodgers fan, from LA) might have scored one of the greatest autographed items ever on his ST trip this year. Gabe Kapler signed his kippah... a baseball-themed kippah. http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/183274_10100181096363291_6008187_53944035_3800214_n.jpg
  16. Yeah, I thought Kentrail must've lost some weight, & forgot to comment about that. And yes, it's Khris Davis (checked his Timber Rattlers player page, which looks like the picture they used).
  17. Noticed an even more optimistic assessment of Lucroy's situation from McCalvy today I don't think I'd seen anything prior to this indicating that Lucroy might not need to spend time on the DL.
  18. There was an emphasis placed on taking the extra base coming into last season, too, fwiw
  19. Thanks for linking that, greeg. Good article and video. Kudos to Jonathan Mayo for really doing his homework on the Brewers, & not just making the easy blanket statement that the Brewers' system is empty. He only missed a couple somewhat notable things, imo. First, that Kentrail Davis's demotion back to Wisconsin last season was more due to the org. wanting his hamstring to heal better than it was in humid Florida. Second, that Farris has been working at SS in Spring Training this year. But honestly that's really being nitpicky about a very good review of the system by someone who doesn't cover it every day. And for full disclosure on Davis, Mayo actually notes the hamstring issue in the video clip.
  20. Where did you read 8%, GormanHarvey? Maybe the 8 people are remembering is that he only threw out 8 of 44 basestealers last season... ?
  21. Gamel update: That last quote from Roenicke isn't the first time he's been complimentary of Mat's offense, which as a Gamel fanboy, I like to hear. Hopefully Mat can get some good reps in at 1B & RF down in Nashville. Ultimately, if Gamel won't be at 3B, I'd like to see him in right & Hart at 1B, since Hart's outfield defense is so shaky.
  22. From McCalvy's latest blog post:
  23. Wisconsin kept running nearly 30 seconds off the shot clock on many possessions and Taylor was left trying to create something out of nothing, but PSU knew this an regularly doubled him in those last few seconds of the shot clock. It lead to him taking some very contested and ugly shots which he missed. Like the end of the game, when Nankivil was wide open on the wing with 4 or 5 seconds left... just before Taylor forced up that terrible final shot. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif
  24. Yesterday's game is what i've feared and been saying about this Badgers team, they are so incredibly reliant on the jump shot. It's 80 percent of their offense and when it's not falling, they really have nowhere else to turn to score points. Not only are they completely reliant on the jumper in general, but the team was just clueless on offense for the entire game. All PSU had to do was jump out well on screens, double the ballhandler, & then fall back. UW was never really able to exploit their aggressiveness. I loathe the swing offense, and I thought PSU exploited its general lack of versatility quite well. Why the Badgers didn't just keep dumping the ball down to Taylor or Leuer posting up on the blocks is beyond me.
  25. He really should learn how to keep himself in better shape & stretch properly
