  1. While I won't worry about 3B as a main priority, I agree that it would be nice to have a non-statue defending at 3B. The Brewers have to find a way to get better defenders on the field. This team's defense could well keep them out of the postseason.
  2. Betancourt & Kotsay don't belong on an MLB roster; both look lost at the plate & bring nothing defensively. Betancourt is definitely as bad as advertised both in the field & at the plate. Braun, Fielder, & McGehee are all at the best below-avg. defenders. This team's defense is just annoyingly bad. Corey Hart can't get back soon enough, but since this is the Brewers, he's yet another below-avg. defender. Melvin really needs to address SS, & remind Roenicke that Njyer Morgan can actually get on base against RHP. I'm not liking Roenicke yet. Morgan would really give the Brewers 2/3 of an excellent defensive OF, but for some unexplainable reason, Kotsay gets all the starts.
  3. Any loss to a division rival hurts, yeah, but if you're going to try to look at it objectively - which, by your post, it seems that you are - why should Game 1 "sting" any more than any other loss? I didn't say that I thought it hurts any more than any other game. Just that this series is very important. Game 1 stings more to me because of the epic choke job to lose it, not because it's more or less important. It is simply to say that it is highly unrealistic to expect the Brewers never to lose two games in a row to a divisional contender. No one has said that. Like I said, I think everyone knows that there are a lot of games left to play. But losing two of the 16 games against the Reds hurts, whether it's the first two, or any other two games against them. That's all.
  4. I don't think anyone's freaking out. However, the importance of this series shouldn't be downplayed. The '160 games to go' line only carries so much water. This was 2 of the 16 games (12.5%) the Brewers have against Cincy this season, and both were losses. Taking into account just how difficult the Brewers' interleague schedule is, not getting one of these first two actually is kind of a big deal. Game 1 of the season still stings. Fortunately there's a lot of time for the Reds to potentially lose & the Brewers to gain ground, but that doesn't change the fact that these losses have been very important. Marcum struggling when he's not really stretched out/ready to go isn't shocking, but hopefully his WOAHs aren't injury related.
  5. I don't know, if you're a hyper-competitive type like MLB players are, you want to play. So even if you feel like crap, if you want to play & the doctors green-light you, aren't you just going to play? I understand that Edmonds obviously was able to feel the pain in his body, but if a doctor tells you you're good to go, & you want to tough it out, wouldn't you trust them? I agree that more detail/context would be helpful to understand the situation.
  6. Really? I will admit my memory of the play could easily be at fault. I just remembered wondering during the play why Casey didn't just take the out right at 3B. I'm going to watch the play again, I think it's still on the DVR. EDIT: You're right. I think he could've tagged him, though, if he hadn't tried to pair it with a throw to first to try to get Rolen. I apologize Casey! My memory failed me... perhaps out of frustration?
  7. He wasn't close enough to the bag to step & throw to first, but he had plenty of time to beat Phillips to the bag.
  8. How about the quote McGehee gave after the game about the play? Huh? You wouldn't have rather, you know, stepped on the freaking third base bag to get the lead out?! http://www.620wtmj.com/news/local/118919449.html
  9. I really am getting the impression that I'm not going to like Roenicke's managerial style one bit.
  10. No wonder this club has issues. Yeah, all those issues we're always hearing about. So, why stop now with Hunter? Morris is likely to start at the same level as Kentrail Davis, another college bat drafted higher than Hunter. Can you explain more where you've seen this so-called unwritten rule on display? Morris has a grand total of 314 professional PAs, and the mid-levels of the Brewers' system are pretty full with 1B or 1B/3B types.
  11. Marquette has signed Buzz Williams to a contract extension.
  12. Nice work, Toby, in all seriousness. THAT should've been what I said first, not, 'Hey, this thing you worked a really long time on -- I SEE A MISTAKE!'
  13. Clearly my post is correct. It was from the future. The Packers buzz is all an elaborate distraction.
  14. Sorry for the one-line post, but this made me chuckle. Almost got a snort out of me.
  15. D'Vontrey Richardson? Is he injured at the moment?
  16. What are all you guys going to complain about when Yuni's hitting .280/.315/.410, the team is 20 games over .500, and 8 games up at the All Star break? That if they had a better SS, they'd be 10 games up? Or Greinke could miss a month or more, and the little things like having a terrible shortstop that doesn't project to hit .315/.410 *or* defend competently become that much more important. There's never a bad reason to improve a position of obvious weakness. Nevermind that a difference of two games could well be what decides the division, how many games you were up in the regular season doesn't mean much come postseason time. The goal is to build a team as completely & well as possible, not to just get the big ticket items checked off & then go to sleep on other things that can be relatively easily improved. I do believe, though, that Melvin will make a deal to improve SS mid-season once Betancourt continues to play as poorly as he has been in recent seasons.
  17. Wow, Frederickson flat-out released. Can't say I saw that coming.
  18. McCalvy edited out that picture I posted above, but has replaced it with some really cool shots of Brewers players working out in the snow.
  19. I don't think the Jays are rushing Lawrie. He really impressed them in ST, & basically made the team (I'm guessing they're starting him in AAA for service time reasons). I'd bet the Royals are sending Lo to AAA for the same reason. Both will probably be up in the bigs before too long.
  20. Tomorrow's weather is expected to be nice, like MH noted, but they just dodged the bullet. Adam McCalvy posted a picture from Great American Ballpark today: http://mlblogsbrewersbeat.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/gabp-snow.jpg?w=555&h=416 If you go to the blog entry & click on the picture, it links to the full-size version. You can tell how ugly the conditions there are today from that bigger view.
  21. You don't have to respond, but hoping that folks are finding this thread convenient. No doubt lots of other posters have been enjoying this thread like I have been. Thanks MH, the interviews have been a great holdover to get us to opening day.
  22. we'll kick off our "Your 2011 (affiliate team name)" threads ! I can't wait!
