  1. It's actually kind of funny to me how strong the anti-Lawrie sentiment is in this thread. The guy is what he is, a baseball player, and a dang good one. I'm pretty confident that just about everyone posting in this thread has done some ridiculous stuff partying in college, hs., whatever, and it just didn't go up on a Facebook page. This makes Lawrie a tool. Ultimately, what 'makes' him a tool is this court of public opinion. Please don't confuse this with me standing up for Mr. Character Brett Lawrie, but the amount of vitriol is a little overwhelming, and frankly out of proportion. You don't have to like the guy at all, but I think we'd do better to stop just smearing him since no one here really knows the guy at all. I don't disagree that there have been some matching-up types of reports on his character or lack thereof, but imo Brewerfan is really above this. And I really don't get why people feel like they need to knock his game, either. The guy is a stud hitting prospect, and could wind up making the Blue Jays as their starting third baseman in his age-21 season. Just because he hasn't posted a .900+ OPS in the minors yet doesn't mean his bat isn't dead serious. For comparison's sake, Ryan Braun was 22 in AA. Give Lawrie two full seasons to repeat that level, and I guarantee you he matches or beats Braun's level of production there.
  2. Is that what you think when people say that about Braun?
  3. When you think about how many baseball movements involve rotating the torso, I'd bet most teams see plenty of oblique injuries throughout the season.
  4. In a Dave Cameron article on Waiwright's injury & its financial impact at FanGraphs, he notes that ESPN Insider's Dan Szymborski (of Baseball Think Factory) dropped the Cards from 87 to 83 wins in the ZIPS projections.
  5. I noticed something on ESPN's bottom line a day or two or three ago that the Cards' expected win total dropped something like 3 wins. Sorry, but I can't remember 100%, or find a link to back it up. But it was about 3 wins iirc.
  6. I love that the team actually managed to scare Jeter. That was pretty hilarious.
  7. Robert, I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd be interested in seeing who would win the Oscars if it were your choices alone.
  8. Fielder's entire 2009 outside of April was basically as good or better than Braun's Aug. & Sept. last year
  9. Bulls on Parade gets my vote
  10. Like people have been saying, it ultimately doesn't matter what Roenicke says. He's got to stick up for his player. One thing I'm ready to believe that's been instilled in him from his time with the Angels is that he can recognize what good defense looks like. Complete hunch on my part, but if Betancourt is as bad as many are fearing he will be, I don't think RRR will put up with him for very long in terms of regular playing time.
  11. Fwiw, with Rogers it sounds like they scoped the shoulder & nothing serious was found. I'm not positive that happened, just assuming it given Mark's comment in a McCalvy blog post, Not that that's a 100% foolproof answer if they did indeed look into his shoulder, but it's encouraging. I'm trying not to be really pessimistic about Rogers right now, but it's difficult.
  12. Pitchers aren't babies now, anything but. It's the sort of popular way to vent & sound macho about it, but it's not true. Pitchers have to exert far more effort to every batter in this modern era than they did even just just 30 years ago. It's not an issue of toughness, but I doubt me (or anyone else) saying that is going to have any effect on people whose minds are made up already. Basically, if you want pitchers to 'man up', what you're asking them to do is either let way off the gas against guys like Counsell or Ryan Theriot, and/or put themselves at serious risk for injury on a regular basis.
  13. Here's Corey's new tattoo (on the left side of his ribcage): http://i.imgur.com/9z88P.jpg A drawing of him, J.J., & Ryan Braun by his oldest daughter (now 9) when she was in kindergarten.
  14. The Peanuts & Cracker Jack blog (run by ASU journalism students) has really been well-done so far. There's video of Greinke throwing live BP, Brewers players & their tattoos, live blogs, and overall lots of interesting stuff. Definitely worth checking out. EDIT: Corey Hart has "Why so serious?" tattooed down his spine. That's pretty funny.
  15. McCalvy's latest blog post includes an update on Lucroy And Rogers
  16. Watched the replay of the UW-UM game last night, and I didn't think the Badgers necessarily played poorly. Their shots just weren't falling well. They had a lot of good looks that were in-&-out, or otherwise just barely missed. Pretty ironic, then, that a shot way off target wound up with enough luck to fall at the buzzer.
  17. So this is our karmic payback for the Wainwright comments. That was quick!
  18. As was mentioned earlier, Carpenter is in his age-36 season. With his long injury history, it's no stretch to say the Cards could be without both him & Wainwright for a majority of the 2011 season. While it certainly stinks for Wainwright & the Cardinals, this is a huge boost to the Brewers' postseason hopes. I'm not shedding a tear for the Classies right now, I can tell you that.
  19. I can't wait to see Restrepo
  20. In 2009 he was even less removed from considering quitting baseball, and he won the AL Cy Young. This is a non-issue imo.
  21. But, I went in not particularly having high hopes for it, and came out rather enjoying it, so it may be the exact opposite of my Black Swan experience. That's funny -- I went into Black Swan thinking I'd like it, but not love it. Needless to say it completely blew me away & imo it's one of the best movies I've ever seen. It'd been a really long time since a movie affected me that way in the theater. It was thrilling, and beautiful, and dark, and awesome.
  22. BBTN is excellent, although if you're already relatively well-aware of newer stats already, there won't really be anything mind-bending. However, it's really well written, and nearly worth its price alone for the chapter title, "What if Rickey Henderson had Pete Incaviglia's legs?"
  23. I disagree. Maybe it's because I'm a bit of a pessimist but I love his honesty. I think most people are familiar with many of his past quotes and I'm looking forward to at least 2 years of his gems. I think it's nice to hear a guy be honest that he finds the tedious stuff tedious. I'm not a fan that needs to hear a player say how much he loves everything about my team & its fans. He doesn't come off as whiny at all imo. He's not asking anybody for any kind of sympathy, he's just being honest that sportswriters & fans can be annoying. "There's more people to ignore in New York or Boston than there is in Milwaukee," he said, "but I would still ignore them, probably." I love this guy.
  24. I've seen all of the best picture nominees except for 127 hours and Winter's Bone. Of all of them I have to say I thought The King's Speech was considerably better than the rest. My biggest criticism this year was that I thought a lot of stuff was 'good' and not 'great'. I've only seen Toy Story 3, Black Swan, True Grit, and Inception. Roger Ebert (who it sounds like I trust roughly as much as Robert R) steered me away from The Fighter with his lukewarm review, which doesn't mean I won't see it -- just that I didn't want to go see it in the theater. I definitely want to see The King's Speech, 127 Hours, & the rest of the nominees... though I'll admit I'm not dying to see The Kids are Alright or The Social Network. Anyway, my main point is that Black Swan absolutely blew me away, & I completely think it's in "great" territory, as opposed to merely "good". I'm surprised to hear that you thought The King's Speech was that much better... I definitely need to see that asap in that case.
  25. Turns out Corey Hart never wore the contact lenses after Spring Training last year. http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/116632173.html
