  1. Teixeira could shift to a corner outfield position. No, I really don't think he could. The Cards will get Pujols re-signed; they really have no other move. This could well go down similarly to the Jeter situation this offseason, except Pujols will still be an elite player when he's negotiating.
  2. Either he somehow forgot how to play defense or something else is going on. I would guess the Angels think they know why and believe he can revert back to form. Unless they've discovered the fountain of youth, I don't see how they can correct what's caused him to decline defensively.
  3. Thus there has to be some reason for doing this My guess is that it's due to 1) his bounce-back season at the plate, and 2) that he probably still has the reputation of being a good defender. However, all the fielding data suggests he's been, at best, below average for three consecutive seasons. He'd probably be about average at a corner spot, which is probably where he's going to play unless Hunter gets injured. In related news, Mike Napoli is moving from a home park with a 2010 HR park factor of .825 to one at 1.358 (23rd & 4th in MLB, respectively). He could easily hit 30 bombs this coming season. Napoli already led MLB catchers in 2010 with 26 HRs; Brian McCann was second with 21. Only 4 catchers (Victor Martinez & former Blue Jay John Buck are the others) hit 20 or more last season.
  4. Nice mockup, 20fry. That thing is going to be amazing.
  5. Ah, of course. Betancourt's white knight to the rescue! He actually hasn't been close to starting caliber since 2007, but I'm sure '11 is the year he finally turns it around. I would much rather have seen the Brewers eat Betancourt's salary if it meant getting Punto this cheaply.
  6. Didn't save the game. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif Just re-wound during the live broadcast. Crap! Just hope someone else like obsessed can chime in. And it was definitely not the Capitol.
  7. I like Napoli's bat, but only a 24% CS rate for his career, and iirc he's not regarded as being good at anything in terms of defense. I think I'd still make the trade, though, esp. in Toronto's position.
  8. The main problem is that the 40-man is full. Of course I wouldn't mind a flat-out release of Betancourt, but it sounds like it's a bit more complicated for DM the GM.
  9. Did anyone else notice the exterior shot ESPN came back to from commercial around the 8:00 mark in the second half? It was right before Jordan Taylor went to the line for a 1-1 (in which iirc he converted both throws). Anyway, the pbp announcer said something generic like, 'It's cold outside here in Madison, but...' and the exterior shot was of a domed building, but very clearly NOT the Capitol. So my question is twofold -- 1) Did ESPN show stock footage from the wrong city? (I find this unlikely), and 2) If not, what building was this? I hope someone remembers what I'm talking about. I re-ran that little segment several times on the DVR & couldn't for the life of me figure out what building it was.
  10. As long as he's willing to put the work in, I think he could definitely fit at 3B. I assume one reason the Brewers were willing to move him is that he was destined for a corner spot, and the org. already has several of those guys.
  11. I feel sickens, ridiculous, absurd is quite fair to use in this situation where we lowball a player who wants to play in Milwaukee. Brewerfan posters are never allowed to use anything resembling strong adjectives or descriptive verbs if kramnoj has anything to say about it!
  12. Why overpay for him if you don't have to? The whole point, to me, is that in this situation, they *do* have to 'overpay' for Weeks. Otherwise, to quote FatterThanJoey, Rickie tells the Brewers to pound sand, & goes & signs for at least 5/$62M in FA. I say 'overpay' because, as I've made clear, I don't believe it would be an overpay. Offense can be replaced much easier than pitching. This is true as a blanket statement, but not specifically in the case of Weeks. No sense in budgeting yourself out of other players by paying Weeks substantially more than he is worth. Obviously the whole discussion hinges around whether someone is like me, and fully believes '10 is a good example of the production Weeks will provide going forward... or if someone thinks he's just clearly going to miss a lot of injury time over the length of the comparable extension. I just want the Brewers to take advantage of the fact that second basemen, as a group, right now seem to be underpaid relative to other positions. This is a premier talent in the prime of his career, at a premium position. He's worked his way past just not being a liability in the field, but actually has developed himself into an asset with the leather. This is the type of player good organizations build around imo, not stonewall & lose in free agency.
  13. Without knowing anything about Tolleson, that sounds like a good suggestion. He'd at least be worth the claim.
  14. I guess the good news/bad news for Marquette is that they play in the super-tough Big East. Lots of time still to put up impressive wins, including the conference tourney. EDIT: They still have the following big(ger) games left -- @ ND v. UConn v. 'Cuse @ 'Nova @ G-town v. St. John's @ UConn v. Cincy
  15. Nicely done, casey. That definitely puts it in perspective.
  16. I think this is really easy to say when it's not your money. I feel confident saying that I would still feel this way if it were my money. For better or worse, I'm completely sold on Weeks. It's not like this was Casey McGehee coming out of nowhere, this is a guy who was long predicted to be this talented. Anyway, it's not really Mark A.'s money anyway, since he probably doesn't have to dip into his personal funds to sign players. So i can understand why the Brewers would say to Rickie, we think you're a fine player, but given everything involved, Uggla deserves to have a bigger contract. If you think players should be paid on what they have done in the past, then yes. But if you're attempting to pay a player for what he'll reasonably do in the future, no. And while I understand past performance & injury history factors into projecting a player in the future, I just don't see Weeks as any bigger an injury risk than anyone else. What we don't know as fans though is, to what degree is Melvin trying to get Weeks signed at a price lower than Uggla? Is their offer say 5yr/44 million? 5yr/50 million? Less than both of those? This is a very good point. We also don't know if Genske & Weeks are trying to get something like 6/$75M. I'll just have to be patient. My concern is that I don't think the Brewers can afford to lose Weeks. With Gamel ready to step in after Prince moves on, I think the org. is alright. But if you're talking Eric Farris or 1-yr. FA deals, then I think it's going to be a major step backward.
  17. i hope you're being sarcastic. Not at all. I remember some people thought that Soup would come through with such a gesture......go back to the thread regarding his release.BOOOO! Good riddance you bum! Hey, where's our thank you letter? BOOOOOOOO!
  18. This is a really cool idea. I can't imagine the Brewers are the first MLB club to dream this up, though, are they?
  19. What bothers me a little bit is the time and loyalty the Brewers showed to Weeks Loyalty like offering him less than $5M in his final arbitration season? Luis Castillo's & Freddy Sanchez's base salaries were $6M last season, Kaz Matsui & Mark Ellis $5.5M. The thing that ticks me off the most right now is that you don't have to pay as much as at other positions to sign second baseman, for whatever reason. Rickie on Uggla's deal is good value for the Brewers, and frankly I think Genske & Weeks are far closer to reality than the Brewers at this point (if public statements are to be taken at face value). On the one-yr. front, the midpoint between submitted numbers is $6.025M. That would be a more than fair price for the Crew. The only angle on this tough-talk I can think of is the organization wanting to be sure it has enough money to extend Greinke, and only allotting a certain amount for Weeks. Trouble with that is that Greinke probably isn't going to want to play for a team that isn't contending, and the Brewers with an offense minus Fielder & Weeks might not be contending.
  20. I hope the first part of your comment is what plays out. However, things like this -- "So, we're willing to go and extend, but there's a limit to the level we're willing to extend. We'll have to work our way through that if we can. We still have time, but if there's a belief on Genske's side that Rickie Weeks is similar to Dan Uggla, then we're going to have a problem." make me worry that a lesser version of The Paul Molitor Free Agent Experience is on the way. If I'm Rickie, the problem is the Brewers acting like I have no leverage, and that I'm not already a better all-around player than Uggla. If they want to wait me out, that's fine. I'll go have another great season & get at least Uggla money in FA. I just don't think the injury risk with Weeks is more significant than it is with any other player at this point. I understand the injury element to this discussion, but imo the Brewers are severely overplaying that hand, and are at serious risk of burning bridges with Rickie on an extension. I hope I'm wrong & overreacting.
  21. Yeah, Brewers? You're not going to get Rickie on a bargain-basement deal. Stop trying to act like he isn't arguably the best second baseman in the game not named Chase Utley. Pay the man -- luckily for you, second basemen tend to be kind of underpaid. Match the Uggla deal & get this done.
  22. There are things they do very well (such as scouting the Pacific Rim where we are king as we get any Asian top prospect we want) Could you elaborate on this? Since I'm not familiar with the Cubs' MiLB system, the only one I really knew about is (now Marlin) Hak-Ju Lee.
  23. Or maybe Roenicke told Doug & Gord he already knows he wants Zack starting on OD.
