  1. You have no way of knowing whether or not that happened. Melvin's track record certainly isn't one of rushing into deals, bad or good.
  2. In the past couple seasons, I've really gotten more into following MiLB and not just the majors. Obviously first & foremost I want to follow Brewers prospects, but it's fun to me to keep tabs on who the other rising stars are around the league. Ideally, this thread would help familiarize BF.netters with prospects that might make good trade targets as well. My idea with this thread is basically in the "Random thoughts that are too pointless to say anywhere else" vein, but for the minors/prospects. Mods, please feel free to lock or merge this thread if it makes sense. I'll start with Jesus Montero (I know, really going with an under-the-radar guy). 20 years old, and just obliterating the ball at AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre lately -- .849 OPS this season, but since July he's been over 1.000. Really doesn't sound like he can be a good defensive catcher, but the most recent chatter I can recall from the Yankees is that they still view him as a catcher. Not sure if that has changed from earlier this season.
  3. The Brewers gave up the better now player for nothing in return It's not like teams were beating down the door to get at Hardy, though. The market for him sucked, as I'd imagine it still does.
  4. The fact that the org. wants to monitor Narveson's innings has me very concerned that they view him as a big part of the near future rotation. Narveson should be in the bullpen where he belongs, as an effective LOOGY & long reliever when necessary.
  5. Iirc you were posting that Gomez had some hidden growth last season, too. Can't remember why you cited that it was hidden then... LD% maybe?
  6. Buc, not sure how realistic this option is for you, but you could contact your local animal control. Doesn't sound like the relationship with your neighbor wrt the dog can get any worse, and you could really wind up helping the dog. I assume you're not their only neighbor, so reporting the dog's incessant barking anonymously should be fine. If anyone remembers, Principessa & I had a problem with a neighborhood dog, reported it to the local animal control, and have had zero problems since. It really would be more to help the dog, ideally, in this case, Buc. Lazy dog owners suck.
  7. Excellent P50, Patrick. One comment I have for you is on Kentrail Davis -- he mentioned in an interview with the Appleton Post-Crescent that he was moved to Wisconsin due to his hamstring issues, not performance issues. Rediscovered power stroke or not, it seems the org. wanted to keep Kentrail healthy(/ier) the rest of the way rather than risk further injury to his hammy(/ies). I'm fully expecting Davis to either start '11 in BC, with a very quick promotion to Huntsville... or just start in Huntsville.
  8. Unless they sign a one-year stopgap, with a longer-term plan to target Fielder. I'd be surprised if the Cubs weren't one of the leading bidders on Prince come his free agency.
  9. http://cdnet.myxer.com/tn/c/917483/big/?t=20081007222556
  10. Another one from said MiLB thread I recall was a scout or talent evaluator saying something to the effect of, 'he could stick at 2B if he wants to'
  11. I wonder if Covey and his family would have chosen to take the contract if the whole process had moved along sooner? It was pretty widely accepted that Covey was going to get over-slot value, and per a Gammons tweet that logan posted, the Commisioner's Office makes teams that are doing this wait until Aug. 10th to start negotiations. Not sure how much sooner you meant with your post, but I don't really see much the Brewers could have done here.
  12. While that's true, the ball was completely in Ben's court. He was getting very fair offers if the Penny/Smoltz comps. are accurate -- a chance to earn appx. $10M if he stayed healthy the whole season. If he'd wanted to come back to Milwaukee, he had a fair offer. The simple fact that he wasn't even able to pitch in '09 speaks volumes for how fair the Brewers were being. He was a huge risk, and every MLB team knew it.
  13. Fwiw, Chipper Jones has said he's going to try to come back for next season. Link
  14. People were slamming the Brewers scouting department over Covey shortly before it came out he got scared off by his diabetes diagnosis & his family said the Brewers were more than fair. It's always much easier & short-term satisfactory to have somebody to flame/blame.
  15. Let's not! I guess if it was a ST invite & MiLB contract, meh, ok. I'm just not into signing names.
  16. His range going to his right is actually just fine as well. He struggles coming in on the ball, be it a bunt or a slow roller, and he doesn't move to his left well. I believe he's better than his defensive metrics suggest, though I won't argue that he does have poor range for a 3rd basemen. That's undisputed. I completely disagree on his range to his right. I think it stinks, too. And, while I understand X was going for some hyperbole with the "one step" comment, I don't think it's all that far off in terms of McGehee. I agree with H&T that Casey's arm is definitely better than "pedestrian", but guys that have solid gloves, good arms, and no range aren't that hard to find. They're tend to play 1B/LF for the most part, though. Imo McGehee should be dealt this offseason because: 1) He's a cheap, average, player that could very realistically bring an arm in return or sweeten another deal to bring back an even better return, and 2) He's blocking Gamel, a better bat right now with the ceiling to be a far better overall player down the road. We've suffered through Casey's subpar defense at 3B, we can afford to do the same with Gamel... a guy that could actually turn into a positive in the field (unlike McGehee). Also... I can't believe the Brewers are still trying to keep up the Casey McGehee -- 195 lbs.!!! charade. It's just too comical at this point.
  17. Except that Gomez was going to be a bench player for them (which is why he was available), and not a starter like he mostly was for the Crew. So no, they're not exactly 2 wins better for it, they're whatever WAR upgrade/downgrade Hardy has been over a different solution at SS (FA or trade).
  18. I think the Covey situation was about as big a fluke as you can find. The Brewers have a strong track record of getting their guys signed, iirc, so I'm really not worried about how they'll apply that pick in next year's draft. I don't expect them to limit themselves to just college seniors.
  19. Well this all stinks, for Dylan, his family, and the Brewers. Hope things work out well for Covey, & for the Brewers in next year's draft.
  20. My point is he "had it" -- does he now not "have it"? Just too arbitrary for my tastes to say players have either "got it" or not.
  21. Why wouldn't MLB allow it?
  22. If you got it you got it. if you don't you don't. Arnett doesn't have it. So Angel Salome still has it, then, right?
  23. Thanks, Hawing -- got to watch the final 6 min. of that game. Epic finish! (& I didn't know how that game ended)
  24. Didn't want to start a new thread, but this was particularly impressive to me: Link 19-yo Lyles's line from said debut: 6 IP, 8 H, 4 R (4ER), 1 BB, 9 K. Wow. Not exactly a glowing scouting report from Project Prospect last October, but his numbers this season speak for themselves.
