  1. I'm not. I'm terrified that if he has 2 poor starts in a row he'll get pulled from the rotation. Touché. Ken Macha is always lurking.
  2. I literally had tears in my eyes and I couldn't even watch the replay so I needed to ask someone who actually scored. Such an emotional roller coaster. That's awesome. It was really cool seeing the emotion come out of Donovan in the post-game interview, too.
  3. Watching Manny Parra match Francisco Liriano tonight was pretty cool -- kinda put his recent success in perspective a bit for me. While I understand that 4 starts is a miniscule sample, this is the Manny Parra the believers have been waiting to see. Over these 4 starts, he boasts an ERA of 3.52, K/9 of 11.4, BB/9 of 3.5, and WHIP of 1.35. 7 of his 9 walks allowed came in the first two of these four starts, in which he was obviously still getting stretched out. Maybe this is some kind of confirmation bias on my part, but I'm personally done worrying about how Manny will pitch on any given night. I understand that three of these four starts I'm citing have come against teams that either haven't seen him, or have seen very little of him (TEX, COL, MIN), but I think we have a legit #2 on our hands now. I'm really looking forward to what he & Yo can do together the rest of the way.
  4. Phew! Ghana's good and all, but how sweet it is to win the group. Germany have advanced through group play in every WC since 1954, and only missed the round of 8 once ('78). Wow. That's 14 WCs in a row, if you're keeping score at home.
  5. Saw on ESPN's ticker that Bobby V withdrew his name from consideration for the Baltimore job, and is expected to be the front-runner at this point for the Florida/Miami job.
  6. Not sure if it was in this thread or not, but I know another poster had the good observation that the Giants probably should already have Sandoval at 1B. I guess if they want to have horrible defense at both corner spots to add a big bat, and would pay a good price, I'd be all for it.
  7. This move is more to make sure that Narveson and Parra stay in the rotation than it is a knock on Bush. We need to see what we have in Parra and Narveson, and throwing them in the bullpen won't help. I agree on Parra, though I think he's been showing about what we can continue to expect. I disagree on Narveson, because I think we already know what he is -- another soft-tossing lefty that has to be almost completely locked-in to give you 6 or 7 good innings. He hasn't been effective against righties, and I don't see anything to suggest he will be in the future. Maybe I'm too down on the guy, but imo he's exactly the pitchability type of guy the Brewers should be doing everything to get out of the rotation. I guess at least he's still inexpensive. My vote would be Narveson to the bullpen, and see if Davis can pitch well enough to entice some team in the playoff hunt to send a prospect in exchange for him.
  8. It was, and it was his second wonderful long throw that directly generated a furious US attack. Not to mention the fact that, right before launching that beautiful toss, Howard stared at an essentially 3-on-1 matchup in favor of Algeria in front of him, saving the header directed right at him & the net. He made the save, and really hustled forward right away to launch the ball. I'm still confused why the Algerian player (who was wide, wide open, just inside the box, with no US defender between him & Howard) didn't take a shot on goal. I know making an extra pass is usually a good idea, and it resulted in a decent header, but man. You just don't get more open than he was prior to making that short cross.
  9. The thing is, the ref gave the card to the wrong player. He yellow-carded Algerian captain Anhar Yahia, and as was mentioned, it was his second yellow of the game. The problem with this, is that all Yahia did was to shoo three of his teammates from within an inch or two of De Bleeckere's face. I can't remember who precisely the three players were, but I believe it was Hassan Yebda that was quite literally screaming into De Bleeckere's ear from an inch or so away. Yahia came in, scattered his teammates out of the referee's face, and was thanked with an off-target yellow card for his troubles. Yahia didn't look to say one word to De Bleeckere, but took the brunt of his payback.
  10. If it doesn't work, the Bucks are left with another fairly big contract they'll want to unload. I think it's another solid move from Hammond, especially with the draft pick included. It seems there are always teams out there looking to acquire expiring contracts, so the last season shouldn't handcuff the Bucks too badly. Let's just hope Maggette is a good fit with this squad, and will be willing to be a complementary player instead of trying to be the star. How is Maggette defensively? If the Bucks could get good defense from him, too, this would be an ideal pickup.
  11. As for which pro athletes are gay, I'm sure about the same % as is elsewhere, which is anywhere from 2-10%, depending on which survey you believe. I'm shocked no active player has come out, as it would barely make the press after the first one or two...much like minority coaches/managers. I never knew SEA's manager was a native American, for example. I can't find anything noting that Wakamatsu has any American Indian ancestry. Not saying it isn't so, but nothing returned in several searches. His father is Japanese-American, his mother Irish-American (according to his Wikipedia page). And if you're equating homosexuality to skin color, I think you underestimate the amount of homophobia that's prevalent in our culture, and I'm sure especially in the macho world of pro sports.
  12. WOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! Can't muster much more eloquence than that right now. WHAT A WIN!!
  13. I didn't get it at first, either. Pretty cool that it caught on so well, and to see a player so excited about coming to Milwaukee.
  14. Or the Pirates could just have made up the "prior" so they don't look like complete tools. I actually think the Pirates are headed in the right direction, but their MLB club doesn't reflect that just yet.
  15. It doesn't seem like he isn't trying I don't know... on certain plays this season, I've found myself questioning whether or not he really cared if he got to the ball or not. Just as a manager cannot inspire David Eckstein to sock 20 homers, a manager cannot inspire a guy like Braun to be an average defender. He just doesn't have the skills, even if he gives a good effort. Ultimately, I think this hits the nail on the head. It's not that he doesn't have the physical tools to be a good outfielder, but his instincts are so bad I just don't think he'll ever be more than a below-average defender.
  16. Except that Corey has recognized & admitted his mistake, and addressed it. While I agree that he should be traded as soon as a good offer can be found (selling high), I think his progression & success at the plate this season is pretty good proof that the most extreme nay-sayers were far too down on Hart.
  17. Robben could return for Thursday's match v. Cameroon
  18. FIFA drops Coulibaly from World Cup I don't think I've seen anyone place so much importance on Gladiator since Ralphie Cifaretto on The Sopranos Another odd tidbit:
  19. Here is my trade proposal: Nationals get: 1B Prince Fielder, RF Corey Hart, 2B Casey McGehee, RHP Mark Rogers, C Angel Salome, and RHP Mike Jones. Brewers get: 1B Adam Dunn, RHP Stephen Strasburg, and LHP Josh Smoker. I guess the only response to this is, if you had Strasburg, Dunn, & Smoker, would you take that offer? I don't think you can honestly answer "yes". This doesn't realistically improve the Nats in any way.
  20. Say hi to Jeff for me the next time he's at your house for a barbeque. He's not improving, he's the same pitcher he's been the past few years in front of a better defense.
  21. So, yeah. France. Link What an unbelievable mess. "But it was just a guy sitting in his corner and muttering - that would not have mattered had it stayed there. What was important was that it made the front page of a newspaper, and that exposes the internal life of the squad." ... "[but] the decision to exclude him was the right one. I am sorry for the children for whom the French team represents something. Anelka does not have the right to say such things." So... it totally wasn't a big deal, and would have just blown over. But the press got wind of it, so OMGOMGOMG send him home! Won't someone please think of the children! *eye roll*
  22. Whoa, I love red ales & IPAs. Thanks for the tip, Baldkin. Got my hands on a seasonal scotch ale from the Great Dane. It's good... nothing amazing. Sorry, but I can't remember the name http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif
  23. Had their Golden Ale again and it changed a lot since drinking it last year. Much more mild instead of like floor cleaner. Well, that's always good
