  1. Bush as the 4th SP reinforces my faith in the decision makers. However, Macha might continue to overvalue veteran-ness. As long as Parra is on the 25-man I guess I'll be happy, since performance will dictate that Soup is out of the rotation early into the season.
  2. You're allowed to have fun, you know
  3. Please understand I am not arguing with you as much as I am just discussing Bench v. Mauer. I don't think Bench would have every hit ~.360, even in this era, but I think Bench had more power. Not trying to argue either. I appreciate the info on Bench. He sounds like he could take Chuck Norris.
  4. Stop the madness. Please. Why are so many people so inexplicably down on Gamel? It's good to hear a neutral observer say this
  5. Bench had a better arm. Yes, and Mauer looks like he could well be the better offensive player. Again, I defer to you on Bench's defense, but I think Mauer's offense is getting overlooked a bit here.
  6. Another vote for 85 wins. Hoping they're closer to 90, though. 90 is probably where the Wild Card bar will be (just imo).
  7. 2.) Bench was a stronger defensive catcher. While I don't doubt you, having never seen Bench play personally, Joe Mauer is the best catcher I've ever seen play. I can't imagine Bench's edge on defense changing things too much, since there's not much more room above Mauer's caliber of play. The best point you make imo, is the # of games caught & played in the field vs. DHing. That definitely tips the scales for Bench to me.
  8. Except he shouldn't back up CF (unless they decide to move Gomez down in which case its him backing up Gerut) and Fielder will play about 160 games. Braun will play fewer than that. I'd personally accept the diminished defense with Edmonds in CF if he hits RHP close to how he did in '08 (.250/.362/.521/.883). That's production you don't just find off the scrap heap... normally. I typically think ST stats don't tell you anything you don't already know. However, heading into this spring, there was a bit of unknown surrounding Edmonds' bat speed. I think he's put those concerns to rest, and it'd be a mistake to let him walk. Beyond simply being without that kind of bat to face RHP, there's a decent chance he could wind up with any of the other ten or so clubs that will be vying for a playoff spot in the NL. I'd have to think there are several teams in each league that would improve themselves with him starting at a corner OF spot v. RHP. Ideally for me, he's taking a couple starts from Hart & maybe one from Gomez each week, and then whenever Braun needs a day off here & there. Combining pinch-hitting with that role, I think Edmonds could pile up 350-400 ABs this season. He'd come close to seeing at least one PA in each game. Plus, in case anyone in the OF goes down with injury, we're not running Frank Catalanotto out there.
  9. Not exactly what you look for in a BP arm, let alone a LOOGY... His career slash line vs. LHB is pretty good, though -- .227/.301/.304/.606
  10. I don't think Suppan is really as bad as 'anyone's better than this guy!', but it's pretty clear that he's not going to be worth anywhere near the $12.5M he's guaranteed this season. In addition to that cost, if keeping him on the roster costs us another, younger arm, I'd say he's too expensive to keep around (yes I know the salary isn't saved). Hopefully (like thunderbat30 wrote), though, the Crew can just keep everyone in the mix & figure it out as the season rolls on.
  11. I just don't think TH has the time to go see them in person enough to be reliable.
  12. Mauer might have put up the best season EVER for a catcher last season. A quick & dirty glance at Baseball-Reference's OPS+ leaderboard yields 181: Deacon White, 1875 172: Mike Piazza, 1992 171: Jack Clements, 1895 170: Joe Mauer, 2009 166: Johnny Bench, 1972 Needless to say, the catcher's job in the late 1800s wasn't anything like what it is today. Piazza was obviously nowhere near as good a defender as Mauer. I think it's pretty safe to say (barring some omission on my part) Mauer's '09 is the best season by a catcher, ever.
  13. I didn't notice it until the second Purdue game (@ West Lafayette). Literally every game from then on saw Bucky's opponents running their offense through high screens.
  14. I'm trying to leave this alone, but a few are not making it easy on me. It's because the ability to hit for extra bases doesn't help much with your teammates getting on base ahead of you or driving you in.
  15. Can you honestly say their motives are to win games when they throw a pitcher out there that clearly is being out-pitched by others? Clearly their intention is to assemble the worst roster they can, without arousing serious suspicions. They're basically on the Cardinals' payroll.
  16. From McCalvy's blog: The sense of delusion here on Schoenweis's part is strange to me. As JB noted, most fans could see from the start that there was no readily-identifiable role for Scott here. On top of that, he 'shouldn't have to prove anything'? That's just an off-putting sense of entitlement to me. I know (kinda) what he meant, but that's a bit of a slap in the face to other players out there. This isn't Mariano Rivera here.
  17. Sorry, should have said "not that intelligent when it comes to baseball", which I believe is certainly a reasonable thing to wonder.
  18. One look at their frames should tell you that Mauer should easily surpass Kendall's career production. Kendall was a fine contact hitter with great plate discipline but never really projected to hit for any power. Mauer might not hit 30+ HRs every season, but he's a better contact hitter than Kendall & has significantly more pop. Add in that he's probably the best defensive catcher in baseball & the fork in the road is more than just Mauer's 2009 imho.
  19. I agree completely. What's most embarrassing about it, to me, is that it really isn't difficult to defend. Most h.s. coaches should be able to instruct how it's done properly.
  20. Another reason Macha might say that? Maybe he's just not that intelligent.
  21. I didn't see this mentioned anywhere, but it seems like AW may have taken some comments and ran with them. I was very suspicious that's what had happened, but no matter how I re-read the article, I couldn't find any way in which AW had done that. Typical. Who knew a troll could get a MLB beat writing gig?
  22. Mauer's value is much higher since he's a catcher (& a strong defender, too). Fielder's contract will be influenced by 1B/DH/LF types, not really by what Mauer got.
  23. Very accusatory & unprofessional for Drs. Anthony Witrado & Tom Haudricourt to diagnose the cause of the injury as improper stretching. It's pretty obvious that at least AW doesn't like him, and I can't really take him as an objective source when it comes to Gamel. I'm just assuming AW is the source of this nonsense.
  24. Absolutely. This contract really doesn't have much, if anything, to do with how much Fielder will get.
  25. Meh, if Edmonds wants out, it really won't be that big of a deal imo. If he'd just pout on the bench anyway I doubt he'd be productive. To get out of the contract, would he have to formally retire, and if so how would that affect his ability to get a job with another team? I'd much rather see the team do what's best for itself long term & not cave to a whiny vet that thinks he's still in his prime.
