  1. TLB - not to hate on you, but a comment. The Badgers dont run the swing against a zone defense....they run a very slow, poorly organized, zone offense. Bo has taken some heat in years past for not having a better zone offense. The swing only works against a traditional man to man defense. No inside play makes it very hard on them to beat a zone. It forces them into the brutal hoist em up offense that we witnessed last night. Thanks for pointing that out. I still stand by what I said... I think that even against man-to-man the swing offense can just be very 'blah' I was disappointed in Bo's rotation last night. Jarmuz and Bruiser played a little too much, and Evans and Wilson didnt play enough. I agree, though I do have to say I liked Bruiser's tenacity. This was the first game I can recall from him where he didn't just look invisible out there. I swear Smoove B Wilson didn't even play one minute -- that's what it felt like. He really could've helped imo. He seems to be the only Badger aside from Hughes that likes to take the ball to the rack. Minnesota should be very good next season. Iverson & Sampson is a wicked post combo. Nankivil acted like he was only allowed to catch and shoot, and looked very slow. Apparently you can't coach assertiveness/aggressiveness into Nankivil. This guy drives me insane. He's a solid foul shooter, but he rarely takes his offensive rebounds right back up. I swear when things get physical his brain tells him he's 6'2" & 190 lbs
  2. - Mat Gamel: remind everyone why your bat is so well-regarded, and show them why your range on defense is nearly as good - Eric Arnett: hopefully he can shoot up to at least Huntsville... am I wrong to hope to see him reach Nashville? - Jeremy Jeffress: time to re-dedicate & start realizing that huge potential - Brett Lawrie: more of the same will do just fine; at this rate, he could debut in 2011 - Zach Braddock & Josh Butler: because good seasons from them will likely mean helping the big-league club - Angel Salome & Jonathan Lucroy: see previous comment - Kentrail Davis: chance to showcase his bat & turn himself into the next slugging Brewers prospect - Taylor Green: hope he can bounce back from the wrist injury & provide more organizational depth at 3B Not exactly good math on my part, with 10 guys. But that's my short list. Tends to be more geared towards the higher end of the system, but what can I say. I want to see these guys in Milwaukee asap. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  3. Yeah, even at that time in the game, I had the feeling that'd be the possession to look back on & point to. Ugh. I have to vent here about my distaste for the swing offense. I think it becomes far too vanilla at time, & almost inherently relies upon good three-point shooting. Normally, that's fine, but without an actual post presence (NANKIVIL I CURSE YOU!), defenses don't have to respect anything inside. Without a post presense, Hughes & co. need to attack the rim more instead imo, but Ryan seems content to just continue on hoisting the treys. Argh!
  4. Alternate caps definitely appear to be ok. Aside from alternate caps that go with alternate uniforms (like the classic ball & glove caps), I know at least the Orioles have an alternate cap -- http://www.paragonsports.com/images/medium/224-5950p-oriolesa_alternateoriole_pd.jpg EDIT: crewcrazy might be right, though. I have no idea if this cap is only worn with an alternate uniform or not.
  5. Ugh, if a guy is getting on at that rate they need to be much higher in the order. That was my first thought when I read that. What a disappointing comment. Even the Yankees' #9 hitter this season (likely Gardner), who will be much better than the AL avg. #9 batter, won't get on base at much more than a .340 clip. I'd have to think that anything around a .325-.330 mark or higher would more than make the swap worthwhile. I like the idea of a 7--8--9 of Gomez--P--Escobar or Escobar--P--Gomez.
  6. That had me in stiches, battlekow. I didn't say the Cubs were young. But there core is in their early 30's not late 30's Fielder Braun Gallardo Weeks Hart Gomez Escobar Lucroy Salome Parra McGehee Gamel Villanueva All 28 or younger -- even Coffey's only 29. The Cubs are a significantly older team.
  7. The point is that the core players for the Cubs are old/getting old, while the core players for the Brewers are young. Zaun, Hoffman, Suppan, & Counsell all have only one guaranteed season left under contract. And Edmonds isn't even on the team yet.
  8. Do we actually know for sure that the main road (gray) jersey still going to read "Brewers" across the chest? I'm glad they made this change, but I hope it's for all road jerseys.
  9. Hardy was given every chance to hit last season, and didn't. There is no comparison here imo aside from the fact the two were traded for one other. Hardy's season line was .226/.297/.366/.663 prior to the four-game hitting streak. He had a seven-game streak as part of a good May, but then stunk in June & July. If a great month of May wasn't enough to get him going, why should anyone believe a four-game hitting streak would have been? I question the lingering bitterness toward him here. I think it's been made pretty clear in this thread that many fans are tired of the excuses Hardy often seems to have readily available.
  10. HARDY was given up on!! Now Hardy IS a solid SS? You can't have it both ways. Um, you're the one claiming Hardy isn't a solid SS & that he was given up on. I made it pretty clear in my post how I feel. I believe some of Hardy's issues were actually caused by bad management, whereas most of Gomez's issues are caused by Gomez. Being rushed to the majors like Gomez was definitely constitutes bad management.
  11. No, but being traded for Hardy IS. If this is the case, the Twins have done a horrible job in filling their SS position for what is likely their easiest season to win the AL Central in recent memory. This trade was absolutely not a case of either side giving up on a player. Each guy has his warts, but also brings solid, hard to find tools to the table. The Twins had a huge need at SS, the Brewers at CF. The other cause for bitterness is that Melvin traded Hardy for Gomez - who likely won't match Hardy's 2007-2008 value ever. So being traded for a solid SS is still being 'given up on'?
  12. Lofgren's biggest issue is reportedly his mechanics, so I'd love to let Peterson get a crack at him.
  13. Sure, but decent in the sense he's a useful 4th or 5th starter, not a guy who'll carry you. As best I can tell, no one ever claimed he was anything more than this. Who are you arguing with? I haven't ever seen anyone claim that "Dave Bush will carry this team"
  14. I don't see Lofgren making the team. He will be returned. They added several lefties after he was taken in Rule 5. Now he's just redundant. No need to save a spot for him. If Lofgren doesn't make the team, I hope the Brewers will work out a trade with CLE. He's got too much talent to simply give him back imo. I don't see Parra making the team. Macha has more of show me attitude in spring than Yost ever did and I think he's going in with real doubts about Parra. Macha doesn't have the last call on making the 25-man roster, Melvin does. And I sure hope Doug is wise enough to not just give up on Parra -- given his quotes wrt Parra, I'm pretty confident he won't.
  15. That 'I couldn't ask for a day off' nonsense is still so obnoxious. If you're too arrogant to ask for time off, you don't get to use it as an excuse.
  16. Of course, the Big 12 could probably then reload with Utah, TCU and Boise State, not that those schools are on the level of Texas and Nebraska in overall athletics, but they would seem to be the logical solutions to maintain the Big 12 as an elite conference. An elite football conference, but not an elite conference overall.
  17. I spend my hard-earned dollars so that I can enjoy baseball with my friends and family. So what does the union do to thank me? They repeatedly go on strike to make sure that my favorite players leave to bigger markets. I don't think it's fair to categorize the MLBPA as striking at the drop of a hat. The last strike was 15 years ago, and frankly I think they were right to do so, given the business they're in. I am sorry, but I don't spend my hard-earned money because I am motivated to take care of the players families. I don't even know their families. The reason I spend my money on baseball is because I want some enjoyment and entertainment for myself and my loved ones. If you're bothered so much, stop spending your money on it -- it's really your only vote in the matter.
  18. When I read the thread title, at first I thought Iribarren had put together a HR contest, which confused me. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  19. That's awesome. The comment from Ryan about Leuer having to compete is nice coach-speak, but in reality Leuer is going to need to see as much time as possible on the floor if he's going to return to form before the end of the regular season.
  20. Joe Posnanski with an awesome post on the Bug Hurt. An excerpt:
  21. TLB, I remember Haudricourt talking about it in the past. I'm sorry I don't have a specific article or link off hand. Oh don't worry about it... I was just curious
  22. If Gamel isn't an option, I agree that Zaun v. RHP & Hart/McGehee v. LHP probably makes the most sense at the 2-spot. I just hope Zaun doesn't see many PAs v. LHP, let alone bat second against them. His career splits are alright, but he was pretty dreadful against lefties in '08 & '09. Even if he's limited to primarily facing righties, he should be a very nice pickup.
  23. And I also go back to how other teams have reportedly resented the Brewers for "overpaying" pre-arby players. Slightly ironic, then, that one factor that allowed Hart to win his case is the Mets overpaying Francoeur. I hadn't heard that about other organizations -- was there a specific story or instance?
  24. Why do you say you're waiting for the players to wake up? It's not like athletes are any different from any other segment of the populace. Some will value money first & foremost, some won't. Fans like when players take hometown discounts, etc., but really there's nothing anyone's going to be 'waking up' from imo.
