  1. The thought of McGehee blocking Gamel still makes my blood boil. If that's Melvin's plan, I want him gone for sure.
  2. The main reason I am disappointed was Melvin publicly making the announcement of "working on something". I think the only person to blame here is yourself for unrealistic expectations. I have no idea how "working on something" means anything good or bad, aside from projected meaning from the listener/reader. It's like his comments of at the deadline of almost getting the big fish. Why make either comment? To appease the legion of fans that were moaning that he wasn't doing anything.
  3. I think you just said what I was trying to say in a much better way, Crew... esp. this part: It doesn't make sense to bet against a prospect because we should want them all to succeed, but my hunch is that [Farris's] OPS will continue to fall and his SLG will be right around his OBP which is basically utility infielder territory.
  4. "6th leading hitter" = batting average? I don't want to just crap on a guy, but I don't know why I should be too excited about a 23-yo in high A ball that hasn't shown an ability to hit for power, or good plate discipline. His defense might be the deciding factor, but as a batter he isn't too exciting.
  5. I think part of what the BF staff (rightfully) keeps in mind is why a player was drafted highly. I would imagine P50 rankings have a lot to do with projectability, and obviously the draft/draft spot does too.
  6. The mere fact we are paying for nearly all of Bill Hall's salary for guy that will never likely to break AA is pretty bad as far as I'm concerned. But you're such an easy guy to please! I really can't believe people expected a useful return on Bill Hall. Melvin maximized the monetary savings, so I can't be upset. It was a bad contract, though, so if you want to complain why not start with why Hall got his deal in the first place.
  7. Wow, if anyone reads only one of those PG Crosschecker articles colbyjack linked (I did actually read all of them http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif), read the one on D'Vontray Richardson. That's exciting.
  8. Was that ever an offer? I thought the Igawa talk was centered around the Cameron talks.
  9. How on earth is Kendall a possible Type B? Wow.
  10. Neal Huntington has actually done a nice job in Pittsburgh imo. I don't know why he'd get canned. The joke of how the coaching staff is run. I thought Macha decided to retain Sveum & Castro. Is this recollection wrong? And of course I am one of many that doesn't believe Melvin wanted to fire Yost when he was fired.
  11. Sort of. Sorry for being ambiguous. I not only think he can & will stick at 3B, I think his athleticism & arm give him the opportunity to be an elite defender at 3B.
  12. Kolb - Capellan... seriously Kolb was a "hot commodity" (that's a stretch Ennder, he was a scrap heap reclamation project as a reliever) and we got swindled into Capellan? Our scouts must have been in the stands with radar guns and knew the truth... Actually, here is what Ennder said in #387: Kolb was not exactly a hot commodity when we traded him for Capellan.
  13. That's logan's short, short version (nod to the fellow Spaceballs fans out there) on how Bush looked tonight from seeing him firsthand in Appleton. Regardless of how this season winds up, the Brewers definitely need a healthy & effective Dave Bush to return.
  14. I'm not sure why everyone assumes BOS. I think the Yankees will back up the Brinks truck as well, along with any big-market team that doesn't feel 100% set at catcher... which basically only rules out ATL.
  15. To be fair, he shrunk back down into mini-Pudge. I think mega-Pudge might have mashed through some records.
  16. I think Mauer might be the most valuable player in all of baseball, since he's a C (& a dang good one, too). I don't think he's necessarily the best overall player, though... if that makes any sense.
  17. And if you are one of the Top 8 teams in the terms of payroll, shouldn't you be winning, especially more than 1 playoff game in 8 years. If that by your terms is good then I would hate to find out what average is. It's almost like you're going to just nitpick on any counterpoint instead of making a substantiated argument. Melvin has shown he has a good understanding of how to build competitive teams. If you want to pick apart every single detail you see fit to mock, you can tear down just about any GM. So if by your terms only GMs that consistently build above-average offenses along with above-average pitching is what's acceptable, you're going to be disappointed constantly.
  18. No way -- Ken Macha's managing to keep his job, so he HAS to play Kendall!
  19. Honestly, I say ride Rivera till he doesn't hit or just looks terrible on defense. And then go with the equivalent... Kendall! Wait, what? The manager has selected him to start the vast majority of this season? Sorry, Brewers fans.
  20. Hardy for Hughes who is like Buchholz would be a fair trade for both teams. The Yankees would instantly reject that. You would probably be able to get Kennedy+. I'm not sure Pettitte has more than this year left in him, and Wang's injury basically has ended his career with the Yankees. Right now the Yanks are using Mitre in the rotation over Hughes for some ridiculous reason (funny coming from the manager that dismissed using Joba in the bullpen as unthinkable... now has completely changed his tune with Hughes), but that's a patch for 2009, or at least for now. Hughes will be the #4 for the Yankees in 2010, and likely one of the best #4 SP in baseball. Stuff-wise, Hughes compares well to Gallardo, but Yovani has demonstrated far better command of his stuff to this point. And to further expand on my notion about Kennedy+, I think you might be able to get someone like Cabrera along with Kennedy for Hardy, but given Melky's improvements this season, the Yanks might view him as too vital in CF to deal.
  21. Consider trading Gamel? Absolutely not. This kid is a special hitter, and has the athletic ability to be a next-level defender at 3B. We have other parts to sell for pitching, and definitely need Gamel to be the LH complement to Braun for years to come.
  22. And fwiw, no days of service time are accrued against a player's rookie status once rosters expand to 40 men. A player shall be considered a rookie unless, during a previous season or seasons, he has (a) exceeded 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the Major Leagues; or (b) accumulated more than 45 days on the active roster of a Major League club or clubs during the period of 25-player limit (excluding time in the military service and time on the disabled list).
  23. You want Earl Weaver. How did you know?! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I'd settle for Davey Johnson or... Acta is available I don't know much about Acta, but I am definitely willing to take your word on it, Tim. I would like to learn more about him, however. Of all the baseball players and coaches and scouts who spend time studying the game, playing the game, etc. there has to be more than the 40 or 50 names that always seem to be mentioned. Yeah, that's part of what I was getting at. Why are the same uninspiring choices regurgitated again, and again? Likely because people just listen to Baseball People who know how to Play The Game The Right Way shout them down. I do think though it starts with finding a replacement for Melvin. Sadly, I think this is probably true FtJ. I feel kinda bittersweet about thinking the end of Melvin's time might not only be near, but also a helpful change for the Crew.
  24. He repeats what has already been reported that the Brewers are not confident that they will acquire Davis and the Diamondbacks are not inclined to move him. However he also adds: "A deal must be completed by 1 p.m. ET on Friday, according to a major-league source." I'm a bit confused... aren't the two options 1) Brewers & D-Backs agree on a trade 2) Brewers get Davis without sending prospect(s) ... why is Rosenthal talking about this like the D-Backs can just pull Davis back?
