  1. Seems like Votto will be fine. Great news... sort of http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  2. Neault was spot-on in calling the Reds' 'diagnosis' on Volquez bunk.
  3. Naturally I hope the Cubs go on a winning streak so we get to hear ESPN talk about how Piniella's motivational leadership has fueled yet another surge.
  4. Great to hear that about Salome's personality, Crew. i suspect one of these guys is going to split time with rivera in the majors next year What makes you so confident that the Brewers won't prolong the reign of Kendall, pogo?
  5. I'm curious as to how high of a ceiling you think Hart has? Just how good can Hart be? (Potentially) Honestly, I would never even pretend to be knowledgeable enough to predict that. I will give my rough guess, but the main point to me is that Corey through at least 2011 >>>>> a partial season of Dye. Fwiw, Corey is making $3.25M this season to Dye's $11.5M (and he has a $12M mutual option for '10, with a $1M buyout). For Hart, I think he's going to produce in the neighborhood of a .340 OBP/.475+ SLG for years to come. And of course his defense in RF is a nice plus, to boot.
  6. I know that's been discussed at BF's minor league forum recently, yoshii8, but I don't have the links. I recall someone mentioning that Don Money still felt Angel had a lot of work to do defensively.
  7. Now, if he can actually see some playing time in his inevitable September call-up. I'd be curious to get others' takes on whether or not they think Angel can force Melvin's hand to call him up sooner if he keeps mashing.
  8. You seem to be under the impression that if he's not traded and we're paying him a lot, he needs a defined, prominent role on the team. No, I don't. I've advocated him being benched & only playing as a sub against LHP at 3B & 2B. But that's in the Hall thread, and I think I've already done too much hi-jacking in this one. I'd love to continue this in the Hall thread, but I've pretty much said everything I have to say over there. My point on the contract is only that it's a reality, nothing more & nothing less. It's well-documented that the Brewers & Branyan decided to do what's best for Branyan, & I'm really not sure how anyone could not feel happy for Russell at this point.
  9. The U.S. will be facing Brazil, who dramatically edged host nation South Africa with a goal from reserve Daniel Alves in the 88th minute on Thursday. It's out of the frying pan & into the fire for team USA, who will only be asked to knock off the two premier international squads in consecutive matches to take home the trophy. EDIT: The final match is scheduled for Sunday, June 28th, at 1:30p central time. It appears that ESPN's coverage begins at 1p
  10. I agree (see my posts on Gamel http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif)... but what is he supposed to do? The Brewers have to pay Hall anyway unless he can be traded. I just think that if that was going to happen it would have happened already. Perhaps the Brewers will have a better shot at moving him around the trading deadline next season, when the receiving team would be on the hook for just a portion of Hall's $8.4M & then the $500K buyout on the 2011 team option (at a staggering $9.25M)
  11. I don't like giving up on Hart to add an aging Dye. The only spots at which I think the Brewers should be looking to upgrade, in order of priority, are C & 2B (short-term though, since I'm a Weeks lover).
  12. So, in one sense, that's the kind of guy DM would go for: Innings eater, gritty guy who gets men on base, but get out of a lot of jams. The things that worries me about this, is that LOB% aka 'getting out of jams' isn't all that common as a talent (as opposed to just being lucky). I would much rather see the Brewers 'spend more to get more'
  13. No Bill Hall and Russell is the starting 3B this year and the much needed 2nd lefty bat in the lineup. ... and Doug Melvin. Leaving Gamel out of the equation is kind of a disservice, and a bit unfair to Melvin as well. At the time (& even now) I really hoped we'd retain Branyan, but it just worked out better for Russell to move on to Seattle. I wish we could have kept Branyan over Hall, but the mistake was made long ago with Hall's contract. I think if Melvin had the chance to rid the Brewers of that contract, he would have done so by now, & I'm sure he is & was well-aware that Branyan's the better option.
  14. Honestly it's really not possible for Hall's production to get much worse, and he was flailing even prior to seeing more time on the bench. I am not of the opinion that his psyche & potential to go from a horrible hitter to an average hitter is worth the lumps the Brewers would have to take along the way. You basically hit on what I would say next, with "it would be better to just cut him lose and give Heether a chance, as he could provide similar performance at this point (hopefully better)"
  15. That's exactly why I wanted Holliday over Jennings. Sessions can handle the offense while Holliday handles the defense. We don't need 2 offensive PG's. I'm not sure I follow the logic that if both players are one-dimensional (or close to it), they work well as a backcourt tandem. Wouldn't they work better as offense-defense subs for one another late in a game?
  16. 4) Awkward height differences between Stern and the players This one's always my favorite. Gotta love the irony in the commissioner of a league full of tall dudes being such a tiny guy.
  17. Theres far too many rules reguarding posts and an elitist type of mentality that runs between the people who have been here for a very long time. Posters are treated like stupid little kids and this thread is a prime example. To be fair, every BF.net-worker response here has basically said that the lead posts's issue is a non-issue.
  18. Seems like all the reports are matching up now, and that he died. Link
  19. If someone could edit the thread title, I think it would really help draw attention to the US's success for those that aren't aware. I'm thinking something like adding, 'US to face winner of Brazil-South Africa in final on June 28th', or 'US to play in final'. This is a landmark accomplishment, & might be the kind of event people point back to years from now (even though as I said, I think Spain outplayed the US)
  20. Yep, Howard has been great all season for Everton - second best keeper in the Premier League according to some Win Shares-inspired statistical work I did this season. I'd be interested in seeing that, Diskono. I have no knowledge about soccer statistics beyond the obvious ones, nor do I have any real statistical prowess, so I wouldn't be able to critique any methodology. But I'd just like to see what you did (maybe link in this thread, as I assume others might be curious too). Onyewu was supposedly signing with Fenerbahçe in Turkey, wonder if he's earned himself a look at some higher-profile clubs (TBF, the Turkish league is nothing to sneeze at) now? And I suspect Demerit might have get another look in the Premier League now. The Turkish league certainly doesn't get the attention it probably deserves, but it's kind of the same reason you see a ton of NYY/BOS coverage -- the EPL is where the money is! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I wonder if players like Onyewu & Demerit have even stopped to consider just how much they've upped their professional stock (given the importance & glory of this win over Spain). It must be pretty strange to just go out & do what I'm sure they tend/try to do every game & just happen to have the game be on the largest scale possible. I honestly hope every US player gets looked at harder now by the more prestigious leagues. Imo that's what it is going to take for soccer in America to take off -- the players produced here will have to show they are capable of hanging with the best in the world.
  21. I think the best way 'clutch' is explained is players being able to perform at their normal level in higher-leverage situations. I don't think it's worth worrying about much in either direction (good/bad), since most professional athletes have long since separated themselves from those that fold under pressure.
  22. Hall complained when he was demoted into a platoon. I don't think we should expect him to react well to being completely benched Although I realize your point was not to state (necessarily) that Hall should not be benched more, I could care less what Bill Hall has to say about being benched more. He makes a ton of money, and at this point is replaceable off the waiver wire in terms of production. If he doesn't like it, he can pout, or not. The important thing is putting players on the field that give the team the best chance to win. Hall is not one of them right now.
