  1. This is the type of depth move the Brewers can't afford right now. There is nothing lost that the Cubs signed Miles, but for them he's not a bad 4th MIF option. This would have been wasted cash for the Crew.
  2. Hopefully we can get some reviews of Capital's Eisphyre. Sounds interesting. I'm another that loves their Autmnal Fire.
  3. But Griffey is a liability in the OF at this point, and we couldn't hide him as a platoon DH like an AL team could. He would have negative value when compared with Cameron.
  4. Derek Lowe at age 38 or so at $12M is probably not a reasonable price. Unfortunately I think Suppan's contract has Melvin's hands tied.
  5. For 2-3 years this is looking good for the Yanks but then a huge chunk of what is left is probably bad contracts. That's an interesting comment, because I'm one that believes the Yankees are indeed making these kinds of commitments not because they truly believe that the players will be 'worth' their contracts each season. Instead it's my inkling that the Yanks & other big market teams sign players to these huge contracts because they can sustain the 'bad money' that's often likely to come at or near the ends of said deals. In other words, paying a guy $180M for 8 seasons, when you're really paying to ensure that you get the first 4 seasons or so of the deal at elite production. Does that make any sense? Not sure why, if my 'theory' is true, that teams wouldn't just pay the full amount (or close) over the 4 seasons or so of prime production, aside from deferring some of the cost to future seasons, when you're probably at least still getting some kind of production from a guy.
  6. There was a segment on one of the NFL pre game shows a long time ago about this very subject. Some math professor was interviewed and then summarily whipped by the talking heads. I remember that too, homer. What do mathematicians know about probabilities anyway?!
  7. But... he strikes out & is old.
  8. It really seems that way In the case of Sabathia's free agency? Keeping that in consideration, you have exactly 2 FA claims here, one of whom signed for Monopoly-monacle-dude-money, and the other hasn't even signed yet. And since when is a lot of high draft picks for a smaller-market team a bad thing? It also seems like he's basing decisions to go after free agents on whether or not they will "cost picks". I hope he continues to weigh that criterion in pursuing FAs. maybe the ultimate goal of this management was to squeak into the playoffs as a wild card. I'm not even sure that you can take that part seriously EDIT: I h8 Macs... stoopid 4matting
  9. My feelings towards the Yankees up until about 4:35 today could best be described as indifference. They were just another AL team. Now I am drifting back into the HATE category. Activley cheering against them. I have a neighbor who is a Yankees fan and if he had a dog I would seriously consider kicking it. Does your neighbor have children? Objectively this is probably a better signing than the CC one and the Yankees are having a pretty good off season. The problem is that I am a Brewers fan and this really sucks. This is just a tick above worst case scenario. Sheets also signing with the Yankees would be worst case scenario. Not sure if they can sign another Type A free agent.(if that has been posted in this thread I will get around to reading it so you don't have to post again if you don't want to) Sorry if this was covered, but iirc no -- the Yanks are tapped out on Type A FAs this offseason. I really can't argue against either CC or Tex, but how they rationalized giving 5 seasons to Burnett is just beyond me. The guy has actually has had more (& more serious) injury trouble than Sheets. The New York Yankees: MLB's Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start. I go away for a few days, and instantly upon my return I'm reminded why I hardly ever leave.
  10. The R.A. Dickey thread made me think of DiFelice -- would he be a fallback (cheap) option for the starting rotation in 2009? And just so his performance doesn't have to be re-hashed... no, LHB have not feasted on him since he added his cut-fastball. His reasonable splits are one reason why I thought of him as a possibility. I really don't think he's the AAAA player that some are quick to label him.
  11. This is great. Honestly, as long as he's not skippering your team, how can you hope Dusty Baker ever goes away? I love you Dusty Baker.
  12. Besides Looper who else is out there? And at what point does Melvin decide to try to trade for pitching? Melvin mentioned very early this offseason that if he were to add a SP, it would most likely come via trade. To be fair, that's the last I've heard him mention that. Once some more (good god I still can't believe what a bad contract the Yankees gave Burnett) FA pitchers are off the market, the trade game should heat up.
  13. How upset would Prince be to know his replacement is standing by? If Prince were so concerned about not being replaced, he'd be open to signing an extension. The money he's going to want is his demand. If he's not committed to staying in Milwaukee, the Brewers should plan accordingly. If that makes him pout, so bit it. He's not going to not try since that will cost him money anyway. A lineup featuring both Dunn & Fielder from the left side with the righty bats we already have is quite strong.
  14. I just think Doug Melvin does a very solid job at managing a mid or small-market team, which is a very employable asset in MLB. Even the bad Gagne deal was limited in risk at just one season. I'd be startled, frankly, to learn that he'd agree to invest any more than a season or two on Looper. Just doesn't seem like his style. I love Looper's low BB rate too, and obviously that's a big Melvin selling point. Another thing to note on Looper is his HR/FB rate -- 9.8% for his career, and 10.9% as a SP. That's a tick better than 11.6%, the career rate for both Suppan & Bush. Looper's got a career FIP of 4.23 (4.82 as SP in 2007, 4.52 in 2008). Fwiw, Suppan career FIP 4.79, Bush 4.48. If Looper can perform somewhere between Bush & Soup, I think this could round out the rotation in solid (if unspectacular) fashion. That is, without taking into account the inevitable injury in the rotation.
  15. About 6" or so here in Portland. Needless to say, I'm in heaven. Spoken as a true non-shoveler. I love the snow! I've missed it.
  16. I wouldn't want to waste a talent like Smoltz on closer innings. If we sign him, I hope it's to start. I'm still naiively holding out hope for the Big Unit.
  17. Would you sign Derrek Lowe for 3/50? No. He's already old enough that imo a 3-yr. deal in principle is problematic. And aside from that it seems he's only realistically available for the BoSux
  18. But to assume an infield hack, relocated to left field, can easily acclimate himself to a more difficult position in the outfield is far from a certainty. Except that Braun's skills would also play well in RF. Like cwolf says, at worst Braun is "serviceable"/slightly below average in RF. And he wouldn't be hurting his overall value by playing there. I have a hard time thinking that assuming if we sign Dunn at 12 mil a year for 3 years, we couldn't orchestrate a trade of Hart Me too. I'm playing the part of the skipping record here, but imho Dunn is the type of player a team like the 2009 Brewers should sign & then worry about everything else (where he'll play... who to ship off to make room for him, etc.) later. ...was about as successful as "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club." that's a GREAT album http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  19. Some of you are going to be quite surprised when he signs that "bargain" deal with some other team If he does leave, I don't think anyone is going to be surprised. Just disappointed Bridges appear to have been burned For whatever reason(s), this does seem more & more accurate.
  20. No WAY man! I, like, totally dumped HER! And she's EASY man! That's why I dumped her! She didn't dump me because I'm a loser, nuh UH!
  21. "Cashman backed off the Mike Cameron deal because Melky Cabrera has improved his plate discipline in winter ball, and there are voices in the organization who still believe Brett Gardner is going to be a useful major league player." http://toolivebrew.u.yuku.com/profile/bypass/images/cry01.gif That face is laughing so hard it's crying. What an absolute joke of a quip from Cashman. As for Gammons... wow. I shouldn't even be surprised at this point with his horrible 'journalism'.
  22. "But speaking in October, during the Brewers' brief playoff run, Gallardo said he was interested in suiting up for Team Mexico. 'I bet there are a bunch of guys out there who want this opportunity,' Gallardo said. "So if the opportunity is there for me, I definitely would take it. I'm pretty sure the guys who did it last time had a great experience.'" I think this was mentioned in another thread, but I wanted to point it out for those that didn't see it. I know it's a neat opportunity, but I can't believe a kid that just annihilated his knee last season would want to pitch in the WBC.
  23. Ha! I know exactly what you mean. The reporters here in Portland have been going to places that aren't actually in Portland (suburbs, up towards Mt. Hood, etc.) just so they can show more snow. We got basically zero accumulation today, but they freaked out & closed all public schools this morning. Wisconsin just ate my one-stage rubber-blade snowblower alive. Looks like I have a nice day of back-breaking shoveling ahead of me. Where does that put the aggregate score... is it now Winter 2, BtA 1? I know you took an early 1-0 lead last winter, but I haven't checked the game logs. EDIT: Thanks for those pics, gypcasino. Beautiful.
  24. Part of the problem was that a fair number of bitter arguments broke out in there, because people used it as sort of a "shelter" where they could post opinions with the knowledge that they wouldn't have to back anything up. It's sort of hard to explain, but does that make sense? That's better than I could have said it... not that that should be surprising.
  25. The point imo isn't finding things or people to blame for isolated incidents during the course of a season, it's about what to reasonably expect in 2009. An overwhelming amount of player data indicates that just about every player in the group of Fielder/Hardy/Weeks/Braun/Hart/Gallardo/Parra/Villy should be expected to improve next season. Old players make errors & baserunning mistakes too. Not to mention the study rluz did last year on the assumption of baserunning inferiority by the Brewers. In reality, they just weren't as bad as some fans claim. Pitchers tire, young or old, talented or not. Young pitchers need to be handled differently because you're increasing their workloads, but aside from that I think it's about the same.
