    I sure hope Melvin doesn't take Cabrera for Cameron. There is a report from yankees blog that says "there were reports that kei Igawa was involved but that may no longer be the case." I do not know anything about the guy that wrote it, but I hope that this is true. That's Peter Abraham's blog, and it's a very good source. Very much akin to TH for the Brewers. Abraham is like TH in his baseball 'knowledge' in many ways (you go there for the raw info, not his opinions), but the info he delivers is second to none when it comes to the Yanks. The gf is a lifelong diehard Yankees fan, and that's the first blog she checks for Yankees news/updates

    Agreed, Amy. Best of luck to you, Cappy... hope that you can help the Brewers in 2009. Cappy is one of the classiest guys I've met It's cool that you got a chance to meet him, and that his persona isn't just some act for the cameras (not that I thought it was)

    I'm not sure if it would in my book. It obviously is less money, and to the point where I probably wouldn't cringe. However, my main beef with this deal is getting a crappy return on Cameron. There is absolutely, positively no reason to make this deal right now. Cameron is worth more than two bits of chaff the Yanks (or any other team... just happens to be NYY here) don't want. I know you're more playing devil's advocate here Peavey, so I don't want to really harp on you. I just don't see any reason under the sun why this deal would make sense for the Crew. The way I see it play out is that the Yankees would solve an immense need on their team, at a position where it's hard to find a solution as strong as Cameron. Meanwhile they'd part with two entirely spare parts, one of whom clears the requisite roster spot for Mike on the 25-man. There's just no lose for the Yanks to be found in there, and it would have a very real chance to go down as the biggest fleecing of Melvin as Brewers GM. The man just doesn't tend to get worked over like that, hence my skepticism on this trade going through as advertised.

    I'm in the "I like Cameron and have no problem with him as our starting CF, but if you can get good value for him in a trade take it" crowd. I am also in the "Melky Cabrera is not good value in a trade" crowd. I'm in the 'I like this post' crowd. And regarding Igawa, most people here are willing to scream about 'small sample sizes' with regards to any stats over less than a full season or two, yet people are willing to write off Igawa after a whopping 16 Major League appearances? I'm not saying or predicting that he's going to be wonderful in an extended opportunity, but his history suggests that the potential is certainly there for him to be serviceable in some role. But what about his history suggests this? As far as I can tell, all we 'know' is that a Igawa did well at Triple-A at the ages of 27 & 28. Where's the promise in that? If he's nothing more than a replacement-level player, imo there's just no need to spend as much money & commit as many years as the Crew would have to do. SP-wise, we have DiFelice (who I'd pick first anyway to fill in), Villanueva/McClung if need be. Unless NYY takes on half or more than half of the contract's money, I just don't see the upside... even though I agree that we should be careful about sample sizes. If Igawa were only under contract through '09 I think I'd hate this proposal less.

    The Crappening... After being out & about today, I see that most of the city streets are completely covered with a sheet of ice. The plows here seem to only be dropping sand. Am I wrong in remembering that WI has a salt-alternative (as in, more eco-friendly)? Or do they just use a sand-ice mixture?

    Perhaps one reason why all this talk has been so relatively public is to drum up interest in Cameron... showing other teams with interest that, 'Hey, we're totally going to trade this guy soon'? Maybe I'm getting too conspiracy-theory there, but I don't recall Melvin trades typically being this out in the open.

    certainly PETCO helps but that might not be the entire story. Certainly one can't just pinpoint Peavy as being disguised as an elite pitcher by PetCo, but at the same time I think it would just be unnecessarily stubborn to state that PetCo Park isn't an important element when it comes to assessing Peavy. He is a great pitcher that has had a decent amount of help from an offense-suppressing park over his career... and I'd love to see the Brewers add him.

I kid you not, ODOT released an official notice stating that if you want to drive on the highways, you HAVE to have your snow chains equipped. That's right -- still less than 2 inches of snow.     Exactly, Monty. Melvin is the one that has the valuable commodity here. If Cashman doesn't want to meet Melvin's stipulations, too bad for him. If he actually wants Cam, time to pony up.

    Here's the exact quote from that lead post: "Saw on Padre website that there are rumors of a trade with Milwaukee if Peavy would agree to it" I'm not holding my breath. The rest of the post is just the guy voicing what he'd like to see. There's also nothing at MadFriars.com (another Scout board) or their forums. MF is a good Padres site, and if there was smoke to this fire, they'd certainly be discussing it imo. The most recent Peavy discussions I can find are the talk of the Cubs deal being dead.     Not WI winter, but just wanted to say that it's 25 degrees here in Portland and we have an all-out WI winter day, complete with around an inch of snow so far. Yeah, yeah... not much snow, but for Portland it's kind of a big deal. Expected to get another 2-3" through the night. This is the first time it's snowed here anything more than just a dusting (that always would melt off quickly) since we moved here summer of '07.

    The ERA's mediocre for a closer candidate, but the WHIP's not too shabby. ERA over ~85 IP is just going to vary wildly. That could likely (almost) just as easily have been 4.50 or 2.50. I agree on the K totals for Villy. He pretty clearly has the stuff to be a very good RP. I like the idea of Villy as the relief ace, so I don't want to see him close. Big Red McClung would be my choice at this point, with Villy free to work at almost any point in a game.

    The yankees fans I know have been laughing at me for days about this and I cant exactly argue. Yeah, my gf is a diehard Yanks fan, and she's telling me how she'd love this proposed deal if the other team wasn't the Brewers (she's a Crew fan too). Basically she feels like this would be totally fleecing the Brewers, and how can you really disagree with that?

    Just feels like the ultimate case of making a trade for trading's sake. Igawa is owed $4M per year through 2011. He did well at Triple-A... shouldn't he have? It was his age-28 season. I just can't believe that this is a deal Melvin wants to pursue.

    Huh? So it's okay for the players, the employees, to get filthy rich but it's somehow wrong for the owners to make a buck in all of this? No. It's about proportion. If there were a payroll cap all it would do is make the owners take in a disproportionate amount of the revenue. What I will never understand is why so many fans seem to think the players are the villains. The owners are the ones ripping you off at the gate & concession stands, not the players. Put it this way... if you work at Business X, which has seen its profits skyrocket in recent years, wouldn't you, as an employee, expect to see your wages increase? The scale of pay involved is irrelevant imo when discussing how employees should be compensated. The economy sucks right now, so people are getting laid off. When the economy goes well, people get raises. Just because baseball players make at worst hundreds of thousands of dollars doesn't mean they should be arbitrarily restricted in terms of pay scale. If you don't like how much money they make, how about the amount that owners rake in? Why do they tend to be so immune from public scorn? It just makes little sense to me, other than that the players are more visible & that many fans have this image that the owner is just a fan, 'Just like me' Teams set ticket/concession prices at amounts which they feel will sell well and at the same time bring in the maximum amount of revenue. It's basically the same as any business Exactly. Just because the numbers are so extreme doesn't mean that it shouldn't be considered in that manner (in mho)

    The problem with a payroll cap is that the owners would then rake in an obscene amount of the revenue generated by MLB, with the players taking far less. Kinda like crediting Joe Torre for winning those Yankees WS titles. Clearly the players are the employees that do the most to generate revenue. The owners wouldn't pass any savings on salaries to the fans, as long as they can still charge whatever they dictate for ticket prices. It's easy to pass off a payroll cap as competitive balance (which it may or may not provide), but in reality it just would make the people most responsible for producing the entertainment earn a disproportionately small amount, while the owners of teams would bathe in money. I'm not sure why people think that players earn too much money but would be just fine with owners making ungodly sums.

    I took the building from within comment to mean that Cashman won't trade away their top prospects for players when they can sign FA and keep their best prospects. While they do receive some picks for departing players, forfeiting draft picks by signing other guys makes the likelihood of having more than a small amount of top prospects that much smaller. I agree with you on Kennedy, but Hughes will probably warrant a spot in their rotation at some point in '09 if they don't want to risk stalling him. I think the Yanks' focus will shift to Teixeira now. Nothing more than my own uninformed speculation. He's a special type of FA, just like Sabathia. Not many guys hit FA that are so talented & still relatively young (28/29).
