  1. I'd like to say I'm surprised, but... *sigh* So much for Cashman re-focusing the Yankees on building their team from within. That said, Sabathia--Wang--Chamberlain--Burnett--Hughes/Anyone has got to be the best rotation in baseball. This contract has a good shot to be Carlos Lee-esque bad by year 3 or 4
  2. Or what has Cameron shown that he "is done"? EDIT: .210/.285/.336 in 396 ABs. Who's stats are those? Mike Cameron's at age 25. But Cameron showed power in the minors. Plus... Cameron by age (MLB) 24: .259/.356/.433/.789 25: .210/.285/.336/.621 26: .256/.357/.469/.826 Cabrera by age (MLB) 21: .280/.360/.391/.751 22: .273/.327/.391/.718 23: .249/.301/.341/.642 While I do understand that Cabrera was young for most if not all of his minor-league stops, I just don't think it's very reasonable to project that he all of a sudden develops the requisite power to not just be a slight improvement over TGJ.
  3. I really hope I'm wrong on this, and Cabrera proves himself to be better than I expect. I know he's young and I know he's got potential. However, that's what AAA is for, or what rebuilding teams build with. It shouldn't be what a playoff hopeful team starts everyday, especially when they trade a good player to get it. I was okay with this rumor when I thought Cabrera was the throw-in player in a deal for a starting pitcher. It scares me that Cabrera is the focal point of this trade. Well-said, Monty. This would be the type of deal I'd be alright with if the Brewers were rebuilding & not expecting to be competitive in 2009. But giving up a good, valuable player to get a guy that hasn't been very impressive almost exclusively because 'he's young!' is not the right way for a team like the 2009 Brewers to do business.
  4. It was exhausting and my morale was way down, when, and I dont mean to go all Kellen Winslow here but, a neighbor appeared in the distance with a snowblower, kicking butt and taking names. I can only imagine that for a moment I felt a bit like some of the guys in those WWII movies/shows did when they were fighting the Germans and it was cold and they were getting their butts kicked and then a tank shows up to bail them out and morale goes up and everyone gives it a little harder. Yeah, end of Winslow rant, but it saved me a hour or so. You're a soldier! Better yet... a snowtrooper! http://alexplorer.net/guitar/text/guitar/snowtrooper.jpg
  5. I want no part of Taveras. Counsell-esque power combined with low OBP skills. Great baserunner & base-stealer, but those skills just aren't valuable enough to outweigh the horrid batting. Iirc Taveras's defense is good.
  6. Plus it's not arbitrary to say that you want a LH batter. The vast majority of pitchers are RH, and lefties historically fare better against RHP than RHB do. Now with Taylor's 'we need a LH SP'... that's just being arbitrary
  7. There are a lot of pitchers over the years who have had injury problems but very few that have had so many instances where they've had to be removed in the middle of games often in the heat of a race. Twice?
  8. I'll echo what others have said. Thank you, Philly, for signing an aging player to a horrible contract. Also, thank you for not just retaining Burrell. As long as the Cubs don't snap him up, that will be helpful (not that MLB rules would let both Burrell & Soriano man LF at the same time...)
  9. Phil Coke is a hard-throwing LHRP, listed at 6'1" 210 lbs. 2009 will be his age-26 season. Baseball-reference.com page Baseball-reference.com minors page Baseball Cube page
  10. There was a Real Chili on State Street in Madison for a couple years. Never really seemed to catch on... I don't really know, it was too far down State during the winter to venture down to it, and when it was warm enough... well I didn't really want chili... The fact that their chili was lame didn't help much either. I hadn't heard that that they'd folded. I feel like a store where you can buy alcohol, wine, & beer in the same place would be cool. What's that you say? They have these? Not in Oregon.
  11. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2312/2418477873_279b6b8228.jpg?v=0 For whatever reason (& we'll probably never find out), Sheets's return just seems out. To think of how emotional he was after the playoffs... saying, 'You can't invite yourself back...' I just think that if there's not something to what jwill is saying, there's something else.
  12. Extra Sucky Proclamation Network ahhh, heck. Hammer's is always better -- Expect Stupid Pundits Nightly
  13. I am not contesting Sheets' ability as a pitcher, as he has proven to be an ace pitcher when healthy, but the guy simply can not last an entire season. I won't even touch the 'clutch' stuff. Sheets provides more value even at ~ 160 IP than someone like Suppan at 200. Rluz has posted on this many times, but when you add in ~ 40 IP from replacement level to equal out the IP discrepancy, Sheets is good enough that he's still a better choice. Where was Sheets in 2007 when we were clinging onto the wild card/division chase? He was on the disabled list. Where was Sheets when we needed a simple victory at the end of the season in 2008 to prevent us all from going into cardiac arrest on the FINAL DAY of the season? Injured. Clearly the 55 starts he made in 2007 & 2008 didn't have anything to do with us being in the playoff races. Where was Sabathia in the postseason when his team needed him to step up with the injury to Sheets? Posting a 12.27 ERA over just one 3.2 IP outing! Boooo! Everything else he did to help us get there was worthless!
  14. "Either the Brewers don't think they're getting enough back for Cameron or the Yankees want them to eat some of Cameron's $10 million salary." ... or a bit of both.
  15. Maybe we could just wait to see what happens? Pretty please? Fie! Off with his head!
  16. Offseason media speculation fail (offseason media speculation in general sucks)
  17. But he's not the sole owner (not even close, %-wise... iirc). I think the point is that his personal finances are separate for the most part from the Brewers' finances.
  18. I actually think the Dodgers or Angels make a lot of sense. Especially LA, who've likely lost Lowe to the FA market. I agree with you on the other teams though.
  19. So basically they want us to buy our way to Hughes or Kennedy. I guess if they'd take on Hall's contract, I couldn't call them crazy for asking that.
  20. Cameron was overrated. Top-10 CF in MLB for 2008. How in any sense is that overrated? 142 K's in 120 games in nothing to brag about 25 HR in just 125 games certainly is, as is a .951 OPS v. LH pitching No clutch abilty, trrbl with RISP. .346 OBP/.443 SLG/.790 OPS w/RISP for 2008. .374/.521/.896 OPS with men on base. Nowhere near the outfielder he used to be. Still a top CF defender. The myths march on!
  21. That's what I thought when I saw it... there's already an 11-page thread there on Cam/CF! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  22. Cabrera is better than you guys give him credit for and Cameron wasn't as good as you guys seem to think he was. No, he's not, and no, your constant mutterings about how Cameron strikes out too much aren't true... so tired. Cam was a very good CF last season. Sorry.
  23. Looks like its gonna be a very disappointing offseason. Good grief, I've lost count of how many times you've posted this bkbrewcrew. We get it. You're exceedingly impatient. I agree with Nate, and think nothing more should be read into this than they're not going to be making any additions like Sabathia's of last season. There's still plenty of room for the team to make acquisitions.
  24. He has much more value as a SP. He'd be largely wasted at CP.
  25. Yeah -- I am not excited about this deal from a 2009 perspective as it stands today. If other things happen, fine... that could be exciting, but if we stand pat after this trade, it could be a long season. I find it incredibly hard to believe that Melvin would stand pat after this deal. He's talked openly about going after a pitcher via trade. This trade rumor makes me suspicious that there's a possible deal in which the Brewers would receive a SP & 3B... or perhaps a couple separate deals getting worked on. I will once again regurgitate my desire for Adam Dunn.
