  1. "conducted ourselves with integrity and complied with all the rules of major league baseball throughout this process." Well it sounds like the second part of that statement is true. Seems kind of foolish for Schuerholz to make the statement he did, though. Sure, you 'out' Tellem & Kinzer for being jerkfaces, but they're agents. Not the first time & not the last time an agent will scam (or whatever they did) his/her way to a better deal. Schuerholz just comes off bitter, and who knows what player he may want to sign/trade for down the road that might make him go against his vow here. I guess it does play to the fan base, so maybe that's the only reason he spoke out.
  2. Signings of guys like Nixon, Coffey, Duffy, dont' really change it. I don't think those signings were intended to do anything but provide depth. Not intended to 'change it' in that respect imo.
  3. I hope they remember that when the chosen closer starts blowing saves. That's fine. They spent a lot on a closer that blew games last year. Closers blow games sometimes. It happens. Spending $10M/yr. for 3 or 4 seasons on one of the lowest-leverage roles on a team is a misallocation of resources for a team like the Brewers imo.
  4. This team could lose 90 next year as presently constituted. JBriggs can you provide the rationale for why the team that went 90-72 in 2008, & lost 2.5 players of note that had positive value (obv. not having Gagne's 'production' can only help things) -- Sheets, Torres, Sabathia -- is going to lose 18 more games? I'm not sure if that kind of rationale exists.
  5. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas... right? (please!)
  6. Oh yeah, we're 'bracing' for 2 or 3 inches tomorrow in Portland. Not even close.
  7. Good lord, Briggs. I'm almost surprised you still cling to your irrational distaste for Cameron. "Up until this point"... by which you mean December 17th, and Melvin has 'missed out' on a whopping one FA of any real value to us -- one that he had no realistic chance to re-sign. This team could lose 90 next year as presently constituted. The sky is certainly falling in your post. I don't think that we need a closer. Our bullpen is probably about as good right now as it was last season. If Melvin can add another reliable arm, we really would be strong there. I agree on the desire to add another bat & SP. Melvin did say early this offseason that he felt trading for a SP was the likely route, but I'll continue to hold out hope for Randy Johnson.
  8. Unnecessary aside but relevant still to this discussion: If Smith were our SS today, many around these parts would be tearing him down and attempting to convince the other half of us that he's not really good on account of his horrible power and his career .665 OPS. But his numbers have to be considered in the era in which he played. His offensive production was far more acceptable then, and of course that defense would have played in any era. Escobar can't post the same kind of offensive line, play the same (or comparable) defense, and have the same value Ozzie did. The average offensive level is just higher now than it was.
  9. Is that where the blisters on his fingers came from? Brilliant
  10. Snowed quite a bit today in Portland, although the temp now is around 35 degrees. Luckily for us, the temp is going to drop well below freezing overnight, and the highs through the weekend are projected to be around 25, with snow tomorrow. Also, I've seen multiple people using umbrellas to stop the evil snow from hitting them. I wanted to laugh, barf, and smack them... all at the same time. Confusing emotion.
  11. What I deduce from that report is this: Melvin is done contacting the Yankees; it's up to them now to contact the Brewers. And if they really want Cameron they're going to be the ones to call and they'll have to sweeten the deal. I agree Crew2323. And it reinforces my faith in Melvin. Thank goodness. If the worst thing to come of this is Cameron in CF for the Brewers in 2009, oh darn.
  12. Just as a disclaimer, should Hardy happen to NOT have his three-week torrid hot streak he seems to have had the past two years, his trade value will diminish by a large degree next off-season, as his stats will look rather pedestrian (at least average for a starting SS). 2008 month-by-month OBP/SLG/OPS: .305/.298/.603 .350/.352/.752 .364/.606/.969 .379/.651/1.031 .363/.510/.873 .300/.451/.751 2007 month-by-month OBP/SLG/OPS: .345/.524/.869 .355/.605/.961 .319/.366/.685 .283/.276/.558 .312/.509/.821 .314/.430/.744
  13. Bringing in Nomar, while keeping Lamb on as injury insurance, wouldn't be a bad idea. Here are Nomar's splits v. RHP over that 3-yr. span BtA referenced: 2008 - .224/.270/.374/.643 (115 PA) 2007 - .303/.342/.383/.724 (363 PA) 2006 - .294/.355/.484/.839 (423 PA) His production v. LHP was great in 2006 & '08, but poor in '07. Clearly injuries have played a big role in hampering his recent production, so using Lamb against some RHP to just keep him fresh would hopefully help there, too.
  14. Thanks for posting that vid, Sam. I love the fans' reactions to that catch. "Wow... wow... wow!"
  15. And I think it's important to note that without Mike Cameron, the Brewers themselves have a pressing need in CF.
  16. Hardy was rated at or near the top by many defensive metrics for 2008, fwiw. And Hardy was elite offensively (at SS). I'd also like to see a very young man with a lithe body develop over the years into a 40 doubles 10 triples kinda guy. I think everyone here would like to see that, but the question is whether or not that should be expected. And even more importantly, can he get on base enough? You could play a guy enough to get 40-ish 2Bs, but he might not necessarily deserve it.
  17. I'm sure other teams can see that Cameron is available and would i'd assume have called Melvin if interested. I wonder if once Dunn/Burrell/etc. sign the market for Cameron might improve. As for Dunn or Burrell, has anything come out at all to show Melvin has any interest in either guy? I haven't heard anything. The part I mentioned about that duo is just mho.
  18. But that's assuming that the Crew couldn't get a better return on Cameron than the Yankees' guy(s). I think Melvin needs to hold off (like it appears he is) & find a better offer. I'd even play the odds that keeping Cam 'til the trading deadline would net us a better return. Sure, Fuentes is a good reliever, but I don't know if he's worth the kind of money he's going to command in FA. Our bullpen right now really isn't in bad shape at all. How many wins would he really add over what we already have? I know he'd be an improvement but if we're talking about allocation of resouces Dunn or even Burrell would probably be money better spent.
  19. I guess I compare it to posts of 'game over' in the in-game thread during the first few innings. Agreed wholeheartedly. I think it's fine for people to feel & express concern about the team, but you said it well to focus on objectivity & not emotions. There's a balance to be struck there, but that falls on the individual posters. I really don't think this offseason's Chicken Little comments are really any different from last offseason's... I just think there are more of them (due to more active posters in general). RockCoCougars, in his 1992-1993 thread, expresses concern about the 2009 Brewers, as many of us have done recently, but in a way that is thought-provoking and, for me, just a lot more interesting than brief comments like "they're punting for 2009" or "my worst fears are realized." It's a prime example of how there's no inherent mutual exclusivity in this discussion. It's too bad that there isn't more levity in general like there is in RockCo's thread/post. I have a hard time understanding why people can't take a step back & keep things in perspective, but I'm sure part of the general negativity is the loss of Sabathia. It's hard to remember that he was just a part of the team accomplishment last year since he was so dang good. I mean, honestly, is CC ever going to pitch that well for a full half-season again in his career? He may well do it, but his 2008 second-half was good enough that he might not. There's a lot of uncertainty with the pitching right now, so I guess a lot of/a vocal few people can't see the forest for the trees.
  20. I think there's a whole segment of the brewerfan.net fan base that isn't in love with Escobar, and only a few of us that think he has the potential to be a special player. Endaround and I have argued this to the point I don't even want to discuss it anymore. It's just hard to make of what Escobar could become imo. His 2008 success was helped by a very high BABIP (.380), which isn't his fault per se... it's just that stat tends to jump around from year to year. Can he sustain a .325-ish AVG without a stratospheric BABIP? I think without question Escobar is an elite defensive SS (or will become one). I haven't gotten to see him play in person, but there are so many accounts from those who have that I can't really find reason to dispute them. At the plate, he still is mysterious imo. He hasn't shown an ability to draw walks, and without more power it will be hard to sustain an AVG around .320 or so to get on base enough to not cancel out some (if not all) of his defensive value. Perhaps it goes without saying, but I think 2009 is a very important season for Alcides & his value.
  21. More great work from the folks at ESPN & Fox Sports
  22. Whoops... thanks for the correction end
  23. Not sure... but others (including endaround) have pointed out that the Dodgers didn't even bother making an arbitration offer. If there wasn't sizeable risk, why not offer arbitration? I also would like to say that without that consideration, I think targeting Penny would be a great idea for the Crew.
  24. Now he goes and improves the already wonderful baseball-reference. Yeah, first expanding to include the minor-league stats, now this. Lord knows I waste spend enough time there already.
