  1. I don't believe there are ulterior motives. I just think we were dealing with an overly-critical (& stubborn) scorekeeper. It's a shame Mr. Webb couldn't have corrected his mistake during the game.
  2. If Gamel can't better a sub-.300 OBP (Hall), then I'd worry about him a bit going forward. There's just no way imo that Gamel can be worse at the plate v. RHP than Hall has been all season.
  3. Beyond how amazing any return for Yovani would be, I just literally got goosebumps thinking about having the true Relief Ace option that wouldn't be tied to the 9th inning like the Closer tends to be. Can you imagine? Basically any high-leverage situation after the 6th inning, um, yeah, just throw that Gallardo guy out there. !
  4. I can't believe that I love something Ned Yost said: "'I love how people go crazy over little hiccups in the road,' Yost said. 'It's life. It happens. He made a horrible 0-2 pitch and he paid for it. I don't understand why people go crazy over the human element. We do it less than a lot of people. If you don't believe it, look at our record.'" and Hunt's line to close the piece: "So worry that the Brewers are in the midst of their longest losing streak in a long time. Two games." I like his spirit, but as usual his facts are a bit fuzzy. The Brewers last lost two in a row on 8/14 & 15. Or else Mike has a vastly different definition of "long time" from me.
  5. Wow. This race has gotten very interesting. It's too bad Melvin missed the boat on Rauch.
  6. I don't watch other teams enough to know this, but I would not be surprised if similar comments could be made about most bullpens in MLB. I don't claim to be an expert on every other team by any stretch, but that point is basically true. I think most MLB teams would love to improve their bullpens. I think adding Rauch was huge for the DBacks. Between him & Dunn, they are a different team from the one that was having a hard time staying over .500 *If* Gallardo is ready to face live competition, I agree completely that he'd be a huge addition to the bullpen... especially since he'd be yet another arm that can go multiple innings.
  7. Thanks trwi. This race could really get close if Ben's health holds up. I'd bet that right now, Hendry is feeling pretty good about getting Gaudin from the A's as well.
  8. Those numbers fail to take many clutch, truly game-breaking things into account that WPA type stats include. That's a great point. I thought of that after I posted... just didn't know where the other metrics were. As of 9/3/08, before any games have been completed, WPA (from fangraphs.com) for: Jose Lopez (SEA) -- 1.14 Alex Rodriguez (NYY) -- 0.47 EDIT: DougJones, if there's a stat you feel is a better one to use here, please point me to it -- thanks in advance. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Not sure where to find the 'clutch' stat I think you posted earlier.
  9. Wow, if Harden & Zambrano are out for extended periods, to quote Tom Crooze (Ben Stiller's spoof), '[Their] mission just got a whole lot more impossible'. Has there been any update on Ben's status?
  10. We had Sheets have to leave the game with injury after only 5 IP, and Manny crapped out pretty early tonight (only 5 IP). Given those considerations, I think the fact that the first two Mets game came down to the wire is decent.
  11. It would be interesting to see how the clutch stats play out the rest of the way, so I want to re-state A-Rod & Lopez's numbers here for reference's sake. Baseball-Reference.com as the reference... Close & Late, after 9/2/08: Jose Lopez: .352/.375/.440/.815 A. Rodriguez: .270/.365/.460/.825
  12. The fact that anyone points to Weeks as the goat today is just laughable. If you'd like, I can go take that part of my post out... the goat is still clearly Parra. What bugs me so much at this point is not people feeling frustrated about Weeks, it's that he hasn't been the biggest problem * Bill Hall * cough * with this team for two full months now... and people are still blaming him. I mean, at least pick one of the many nights where Rickie goes 0-4, not the one where he's the standout performer.
  13. Rluz, clearly with all your stats & numbers & statistics, you're just out to get people. Alex Rodriguez has been far and away the worst clutch player in baseball this season, with a rating of negative 2.70 This tells you all you should need to know about 'clutch' -- it can be fans searching for a reason to feel justified in being upset. The best hitter in the game is the 'worst' clutch player... when one reduces the PA sample to almost as small a sample as possible, strange results occur. If someone wants to bat Jose Lopez over A-Rod with the game on the line, I hope my team plays that team as much as possible.
  14. Rickie Weeks goes 4-6 and still manages to be a goat. He needs to go, find a replacement. Awful defense, awful hitting, he's just awful. Let's play, 'Name the Goat!', the hottest new gameshow around! Manny Parra: 5 IP, 6 H, 5 R (4 ER) Rickie Weeks: 4-6 with a HR, finished 2 of 2 double plays
  15. Rickie Weeks had a 4-hit night, and made some nice turns of double plays.
  16. So Dillard has two bad outings and he "shouldn't be allowed to touch a baseball ever again"? Book it, bottom line. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/eyes.gif Imo the problem is less that we need any one set RP for the 8th inning, and more that Eric Gagne needs to be used in lower-leverage situations. Ned had the ability to separate Mota from the high-leverage work earlier this season, so I am optimistic he can do so again with Gagne. Dillard not being used is insane at this point.
  17. "Sorry to bother you while you are out with your family, Gabe, but I just wanted to tell you that I think you're doing a great job this season. Good luck the rest of the way". He kind of smiled and said, "Hey, thanks a lot buddy. I appreciate it". And that was that. It was pretty cool. Super classy, brwrsfan. I guarantee you those are the types of fan moments players really cherish.
  18. couple that with a slower running LaRoche and this was a no-brainer error to me The funny part is that, in Webb's phone interview on ESPN... was it Outside the Lines? I know Bob Ley was hosting... anyway... Webb described LaRoche's role in the play as a (paraphrasing), 'fast runner running down the line'. I think the guy is certainly giving waaayy too much credit to how difficult the play actually was. It's a shame that he seems unwilling to admit mistakes and/or correct them.
  19. In a 2-0 game, I was absolutely fine with Yost using Shouse there. As has been mentioned, if Riske didn't load his diaper, Stetter would have been there for the 8th, and I liked that Mitch was used when he was yesterday.
  20. Yeah, that was sweet, brewtacular. I miss that tradition
  21. You stat guys just hate puppies. I'd genuinely like to know why some people think statistical projections are 'people trying to be exact', or posters just being pessimistic to rain on others' parades. The talk just after Sabathia was acquired was nothing short of overjoyed on all accounts from what I can recall.
  22. Salome was not on the bench, he was in the tunnel. This made me snort-laugh. simple folk like me are easily amused. I think you mean, "us"! There was a great opportunity for it today in the 9th inning, but Yost decided to stay with Kendall. That's a bit disheartening knowing what we had sitting on the bench. Heck, why not give Salome an AB there. The most discouraging thing to me was that, since there are 3 other C on the available roster right now, Yost could have used any PH option... including Gamel, Nelson, Rivera, and a host of others.
  23. But Prince Fielder didn't tell Ned to pinch-hit for Kendall, so how was Ned supposed to know?
  24. Except that his last appearance prior to tonight was one in which he received a Hold in the 8th inning, in a 3-1 Brewers victory.
  25. Speaking of sweet avatars... Ned Yost approves! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif
