  1. That's great... I always feel like the best nicknames are the ones that come about organically.
  2. Hardent This looks like it was a typo, but I think we may be onto a great nickname for the guy.
  3. This idea that there's some huge group of Yost bashers here that hope he fails so they can make snarky comments is just not accurate. I can think of -- at most -- a handful of people that have conducted themselves in that manner this season. There's just not this large/decent-sized population of people that relish in seeing Yost fail. The criticisms are typically focused on strategic moves, and not outcomes. I think platooning Bush/McClung home/road is a bad idea, because it gets SP out of their routine of going every 5th day or so. It happens to be Yost's idea, but that's not why it's a strange or bad idea. If the idea worked out ok, it would not change my opinion that the concept is a poor one.
  4. I'd be shocked if another DL stint isn't coming soon. As long as it comes after we put a 5-spot on him in 3 IP, that's fine by me. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  5. This has nothing to do with Tichenor, but I thought the home plate ump for the first game was very good. At first, his strike zone looked a little tight, but I realized it was because it was actually CORRECT, which is odd looking compared to some of the zones we've seen. The only pitch I thought was called wrong was the one Hall looked at for strike three. It was close, though. I agree 100%, and was commenting on his zone during the chat. Bucknor was stellar last night. He was completely consistent save maybe that called strike 3, and the one fastball from Torres (iirc) later in the game just below the letters that he called ball 1. The response in the chat was complete & utter shock (anyone recall who was batting?). It was an awful call, but really the only one of the night that was any less than 'good.' I boldfaced that section because it's exactly what I felt during the game. If that's what he's like consistently, CB Bucknor can ump my game any day of the week, and I'd keep him around even after the robot umps take over. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  6. Yeah... why? Is that bad? I'm not a Yost guy but I will say one thing, it took an INCREDIBLE amount of guts to put Gagne and Mota in there in a game of that magnitude. Guts... only one letter removed from "Nuts", which is exactly what Ned was to throw Mota in that situation. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  7. Well he is -- range is extremely valuable at 2B, arguably moreso than any other defensive spot (since arm strength is less valuable at 2B). For goodness' sake, Weeks has both started hitting better & having his smashes find holes/turf/bleachers. He had a fantastic game at the plate last night and made one bad play in the field (the deflection off Torres's glove was no gimme, no matter how much people complain about it) July: .241/.349/.426/.775 Last 14 days: .306/.419/.472/.891 Last 7 days: .267/.476/.533/1.010 And for some strange reason, he's had awful results at MP (.209/.302/.295/.597) so far... in only 36 games. Now if people think that's likely to continue, I just don't think we can have an objective discussion on Weeks. Road line: .227/.349/.438/.787 All signs (& common sense) point to Rickie performing much, much better the rest of the way than many are 'predicting'. A platoon with Durham is just an awful idea imo. Now, I know Weeks has been frustrating for a lot of this season, but the strange part is that now it's basically irrelevant. The team was able to (somehow) withstand its leadoff man stinking horribly for the first 3 full months of the season. Because of this (& not anything Rickie has or hasn't done), Weeks needs to be basically evaluated on a clean slate. Yes, the past results can & should be included, but there's enough wackiness in them to be a bit misleading.
  8. Who's even betting the Cub get in at this point considering they are starting to slip? Anyone that likes to bet on the favorite, according to odds.
  9. "its well-rested pitching staff" Cue baseball gods smiting the Cubs with a short, horrid outing by their SP Marquis today.
  10. THT sortable (2008 defense) stats page Be forewarned: Especially when considering the Brewers, who employ extreme shifts more than most teams, the metrics can be odd. As far as I know, there isn't a reliable metric for D that takes extreme ***** into consideration. The OOZ (out of zone) tallies are skewed, & I imagine the in-zone stuff is too. Does anyone that's better versed on the newer defensive stats know if the extreme shifts are as problematic as they appear? Or do the results even out (as in, more/less OOZ plays & more/less in-zone plays) EDIT: RZR appears to be a better choice than just ZR, since RZR takes the OOZ plays into account. But considering the over-shifts, maybe the best idea is to see where a player ranks in several defensive stats & try to get a relative idea of his standing amongst his peers.
  11. Well then, yes, I would worry about Harden's health in the future. Tonight's start (as in, his pitch count) might prove to be an aberration, but we'll have to wait & see.
  12. Just as a heads-up for 2009 (hope I don't make you feel swindled, SF), the basic E.I package costs $200 at the beginning of the season -- at least that's what I paid. Comcast gave me the option to pay up front or break it up into $40/mo. payments. I don't know if there are any 'pre-season' specials that bring it under $200, but I have to say that this is easily the best $200 I've ever spent. If you can fit it in your budget, and you live out of your team's market, it's an absolute no-brainer decision. Clucky told me to buy it, and he's only ever been more right by pitching Mota in the 6th tonight.
  13. I really don't know where the 'Branyan sucks on D' notion has come from. He's no Scott Rolen, but he's certainly our best option at 3B. A couple/few bad plays (I wonder how much the amount of sitting he's done lately has to do with them) in recent games doesn't make him a sub-par defender. In general, Russ appears to be average at worst at the hot corner.
  14. I don't think that 112 is much cause for concern (as an isolated occurance), since it got through 7 IP (16 P/Inn.). It would probably be unwise to ask Harden to go out there & throw 115-120 pitches per start, but he was critical tonight to keeping the Cubs in an important game. I guess in that sense, I do get the impression from Piniella that he'll lean on a guy a bit more than some managers would... but that's admittedly just a 'seems like' thing. Harden looked very, very good tonight. Didn't look to have a 'tired arm' at all from the litte I watched. When he went to the mound, Harden convinced Pinella to let him stay in the game. That right there would worry me as a Cubs fan. Sure, no harm done tonight, but I am of the mind that the manager needs to have the say when it comes to pitching changes. When in the game was Piniella considering this? If it was prior to the 7th, then it's really no big deal, since Harden was likely under 100 pitches.
  15. That's awesome jhart -- pass along congratulations (sure you've done so already). I hope the game on Thursday is fun to watch, and that the Brewers win big... that way if there are any questionable calls, it won't matter. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  16. Eric Gagne not only got good results tonight -- his stuff & command looked good. Rickie Weeks has been good at the plate of late. He was very good at the plate tonight. Oh, and what jhart said! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  17. In reference to Yost & tonight's game/outcomes -- To quote a famous baseball announcer's legendary call, "I don't believe what I just saw!" The man found new ways to try & rip a hole in the space-time continuum tonight, and the Brewers were able to withstand it. Of course, this tells us that Ned has in fact created a hole in the fabric of the space-time continuum. Presumably to help Mota return home to Zirmucon VIII. I can't even begin to put into words how awful Ned's strategy was tonight. I'm glad the Crew won, but I'm worried that Mota is now going to be used in high-leverage situations because, 'He's pitching good. He's been pitching good.' I'm worried about Gagne too, but to a lesser extent because, while Mota got quite lucky tonight (his command looked horrible), Gagne actually looked pretty darn good. I don't know what to make of all of this, but I'm sure it's probably A-Rod's fault somehow.
  18. What is the title of the thread trying to say? I legitimately don't understand, sorry -- not taking a potshot at you, scottfossum. Is it a quote/paraphrase from a postgame interview?
  19. I don't think Ennder's 'player' had to play 2B. Durham happens to play there.
  20. If it's unfair to anyone, it's Jar-Jar. Katie Holmes did her best to ruin that movie for me in every scene she had. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Mad Men is a flat-out, kick-[butt] show. The way it addresses the 'upper' classes & what that means/how one gets there is just brilliant. Literally every character on the show that has a privileged life is 'there' due to either just being born into it, or accepting skeletons in the closet to get there. EDIT: I don't want to just stop there -- the show handles all of the following brilliantly: sexuality, gender roles, marriage/fidelity, caste, etc. The list goes on & on
  21. Pandas are commies. They must be stopped. We currently sport 500 thread count sheets on the bed, but Mary has her eye on some 600 thread count jobs. I have no idea why. Clearly you should speak up so she doesn't DustyBaker-ize your sheets' young & valuable pitching arms.
  22. The ironic thing in this sense is that the Yankees finally got smart on player development v. trading prospects for old vets. Cashman has finally been allowed to run the team as he sees fit, & I'll always think of the Sheffield trade as day one of that 'era'
  23. thanks to Russ and all the great BF statheads! I can echo that, b & b. Brewerfan & the posters we have that are comfortable & knowledgeable with stats have been the main reason my understanding of baseball has completely evolved (imho). I feel like I have a miniscule level of understanding when it comes to "stats" -- but what I try to strive for is a basic, relative understanding of the different stats. A basic example of what I mean is that ERA+ & OPS+ are 'avg.' at the value of 100. I don't know the precise formula in each case, but I understand that those stats do their best to compare players across different eras & ballparks... and that's good enough for me.
  24. I had them at 9-7 to this point, so a 15-12 mark at this point would be a let-down. For a 're-guess', 17-10, only combining 11-5 with my initial guess.
