  1. I don't care what he did in the minor leagues or where he was drafted. Hendrickson (10th rd. pick) certainly didn't have the kind of minor league numbers Olson did, not to mention major league numbers.
  2. Again, Garrett Olson is a fine pitcher
  3. Garrett Olson the first round pick? He had a filthy minor league career. Just because you haven't heard of him before/'he's young' doesn't = 'he sucks!'
  4. I just wanted to talk about Seth's performance on Friday. It concerned me while he was pitching, and I think he was quite fortunate that the O's didn't do more damage. The 5 BBs really, really worry me, since control is always what has been Seth's roadblock. Beyond that, how he was getting them concerns me more. He reverted back relatively consistently to trying to reach the mid-90s with his FB. While he certainly succeeded, his control was horrible seemingly every time he 'reached back'. Yet when he kept his velocity in the lower 90s, his control appeared to be very good. Maybe Kendall needs a sign for the fastball Seth can actually locate, and the 'Gruntball'. What concerns me so much is that teams by now likely have the scouting reports on McClung. That's fine -- happens for every pitcher in the game. But if, on top of teams being better prepared to face him, Seth is going to try to be Mr. Macho & grunt his way to a bunch of 96-mph pitches outside the zone, then I worry about his ability to be effective. Don't get me wrong -- I've been enjoying McClung's contributions to the team, and certainly don't want to see him fail. However, the BBs & control WOAHs worry me a bunch, since they've haunted him his whole career (not like it'd be a problem we hadn't seen before). It was puzzling to hear BA & Rock talk about how great McClung was on Friday during the game today. Considering that they appeared to remember only 3 of the 5 BBs, I guess that shouldn't surprise me.
  5. Am I the only one that was appalled to hear BA & Rock talk about how 'great' McClung was last night? Then they said, 'Yea, only 3 walks'... cue graphic flashing up, correcting them, displaying the 5 BBs Seth had last night. Ugh.
  6. Jason, I get the MASN feed on Extra Innings -- my guess is that the FSN-WI folks have a well-earned day off. I'd say head for your favorite sports bar with Extra Innings. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  7. Orioles: 2B Roberts RF Markakis 3B Huff 1B Millar LF Scott C Hernandez CF Jones SS Bynum P Cabrera ------------------------------------- Brewers: 2B Counsell SS Hardy LF Braun 1B Fielder RF Hart 3B Branyan CF Kapler C Kendall P McClung ------------------------------------- Kapler in CF again? What did Mike say to Ned?
  8. I'd say that it's hard to believe he was traded for Bobby Hill, not that the Pirates were the team that gave him away. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  9. Hey -- John Gibbons will probably want you to be his pitching coach if he gets another managing gig! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  10. yep, and GPA, too. Though it's only fair (& highly relevant) to include this part: "Big improvement by going from AVG to either OBP or SLG. Pretty big jumps from SLG on up to OPS. But not much of an improvement after you hit OPS. The most accurate stats proved to be those based on linear weights: RAA/PA, wOBA, and R/G. That's gratifying, as I've been treating them as the gold standard statistics on this site for rating hitters... but they're incremental improvements, at best, over plain old OPS in terms of predicting runs scored." From the graph displayed, basically everything from OPS to R/G is about the same. Not exactly, but close enough for this simple Simon. Basically, BA < OBP/SLG < OPS/etc. -- from this study, anyway. Great find, and thanks for sharing that kramnoj
  11. I could see MLB setting up a separate minor league system in Korea and Taiwan (maybe China), places where baseball is big but not on the level of moneymaking Japan is. No posting fees makes MLB very, very happy. Now this I could see happening. It makes a lot of sense in addition to saving MLB cents. The game is very big with a rich history in Asia, and in that sense expansion is very exciting. Imho there are just so many potential troubles with trying to have MLB teams nearly as far apart (on Earth) as possible playing each other.
  12. It's a crazy (not meaning bad, just kinda wild) idea, but I have to imagine the flight/travel times put the nix on this from the very start. "Teams can get used to it, largely because it will be a massive money maker. If two North American squads swing through Asia at one time, while one team from Japan and one from either Taiwan or South Korea visit North America, the television revenues will make the trips worthwhile." I think this really glosses over the whole 'it takes a day by plane to get there' stuff. MLB isn't exactly hurting for cash.
  13. Well now you're making sense! You know these stupid fans think they know stuff about baseball? It's hilarious!
  14. 1996 (age 20) Columbus (A-): .268/.355/.575/.930 482 AB, 129 H, 20 2B, 40 HR, 62 BB, 166 SO --perhaps only fading in comparison to-- 1999 (age 23) Buffalo (AAA): .208/.305/.468/.773 395, 82 H, 11 2B, 30 HR, 52 BB, 187 SO Now that's a 3TO season!
  15. Maybe one or two would be an accurate count. How many of Bucky Rules's posts have been abrasive & argumentative to the point where other posters have taken issue? Screaming at failure and not praising success doesn't make you tough or someone who demands accountability, it only makes you (forgive the language) an unreasonable, mean, backside of a horse. Yost is praised by people who criticize him, but I admit that number is small (as is the number who criticize him while often praising him)
  16. YES! But don't ask him to provide an explanation. You just don't understand, because you never played! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  17. My main point is that this has been almost entirely swept aside. Jeter could easily regain his form. But if ARod hit this way for a single month we would be swamped with stories about how he just can't handle the pressure and isn't worth the money. Yeah, Jeter's been bad this season. He gets almost a complete free pass, but not from all Yanks fans. Father Time appears to be catching up with Derek, though I doubt he won't have an offensive surge this season that'll bring those numbers back up near his norms. Ooops, my bad. I'm just in "the answer to every question must be Russell Branyan" mode! Well, you certainly shouldn't ever be out of that mode, so it's ok! Not to hi-jack the thread, but is anyone else tired of the Joba Chamberlain love fest? What is he doing that Seth McClung isn't? Joba debuted in the rotation on 6/03. Seth pitched that night too. Here are their stats since then: Chamberlain 0-0 record, 18.1 IP, 1.96ERA (7 runs/4 earned), 19K's/12BB, 1.55 Whip McClung 2-1 record, 18.0 IP, 2.50ERA (5 runs/5 earned), 13K's/1BB, 0.77 Whip Seth & Joba are hardly even worth comparing (imho). Chamberlain is far & away the better talent. His early SP numbers are skewed by him going straight from 1-inning set-up man to starter without being stretched out. His start yesterday was pretty dominating (3 BB / 9 K in 6 2/3). He's a special talent.
  18. Yeah, I agree that that's pretty funny, owbc. Strange. Welcome back Cito, huh? Probably a great move for a team (likely) going nowhere this season. Gets the fans' attention & really overall doesn't do much, good or bad. Gibbons is an ape. Aptly named. Jerks like him have no business leading people. (Yes, I have a bias against him. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif )
  19. *Raises hand* Largely because that means he can't hit any more 7-R, game winning HRs off the Brewers! But also bc then he'd make Ricciardi look even more like an idiot. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  20. He's made comments. He's made an even louder statement with not signing a long term deal after crying about not getting paid. You know Milwaukee is offering it to him. He wants out. Crying? Come on, NDOGG. He answered a direct question, and fans have blown it out of proportion. If it makes you feel better to say he "cried" about it, fine. But he didn't. That's just overblown -- comments? More like 'comment within the context of a direct question' I know it's unpopular, but if I were in Prince's situation, I think I'd play it the same thus far. Why not opt against a contract extension when you play the very small risk of injury against the gigantic payoff of a $100M-ish contract? If Carlos Lee is a $100-M man, then Prince Fielder most certainly is.
  21. Not knowing anything specific, it's hard to get a read. However, the one thing you can say here is that this latest development isn't good news for the Cubs. It's not necessarily bad news, it just certainly isn't good news.
  22. They 'need' to take 3 of 4 for what, though -- are you meaning the NL Central title?
  23. Welcome, faithful brother! Guess that .800 OPS thing wasn't so crazy after all.
  24. Sometimes you really can't take balls at face value. You can't always trust your balls. I disagree. You always trust your balls.
