  1. To elaborate on FIB's post... "My timing is way off right now," Weeks said. "My swing feels good, and I feel real good up there, but that could be my nemesis: I feel too good right now. I'm out in front of everything." Also, I found Braun's sore/stiff achilles tendon to be much more worrisome... to each his own. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif "Left fielder Ryan Braun sat, as expected, because of lingering stiffness in his right Achillies tendon. ... Braun has played just once since he was scratched from a game against the Mariners on March 12, and was a late scratch again Sunday. Braun believes a new pair of shoes may be to blame, a pair of Nike Shox metal cleats. "I guess Nike has had problems with the Shox," said Braun, who had heard that NBA players had stopped wearing the shoe. "It makes sense, because they take so much pressure off your heel and put it on the front of your foot. I don't know if that had anything to do with it or not. "It's my right Achilles, so it hurts when I try to push off my back leg [while] hitting or running. Better to get it taken care of now than have it lingering later. ... There's no reason to take a chance." Sounds very similar to what troubled Hall after his high-ankle sprain (in terms of effect, obv. it's ankle v. achilles tendon) last year.
  2. I respect your baseball opinion GREATLY rluz, but we know what Counsell is. He's obvously in somewhat of a groove and has obviously gotten very lucky in his very limited at-bats this Spring. That was his point. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif i ll touch on your underlined word to say that the definition of "baseball knowledge" i was using in this exact opposite of selective. by the way, please offer your opinion and basis for it, no need to take shots or convince people otherwise that you are right. But by definition it's been selective - you know Rickie's been deliberately doing one specific thing this spring that's going to lead to a lot of outs & Ks, but then you're worrying that it's a sign to heed moving forward... as though it wasn't his intention, when we clearly know it is. I apologize for taking a shot. I've gotten frustrated given the straightforwardness of this situation. He was taking the pitches right down the middle and swinging at the stuff out of the zone from what I saw. But couldn't that be exactly what he's working on doing? How can anyone be certain that Rickie's not working semi-exclusively on hitting breaking pitches/borderline pitches? Everyone already knows what he can do with those fastballs right down the pike.
  3. But you're inviting this all by utilizing your selective 'baseball knowledge.' Being provided with a logical, plausible explanation hasn't done anything for you, so obviously nothing will. Just go on worrying.
  4. Then the final spot comes down to Dillion vs. Gross. Since I can't stand Gross, I hope Dillion makes it. No offense, but Gross is a far superior player to Gwynn. There's no way Gross's 25-man spot isn't locked & loaded.
  5. rluz, now you're just cherry-picking. You conveniently neglect to mention that Craig's new batting stance has obviously made its mark. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  6. Gladly reporting for duty! Some people are addicted to internet porn - I am addicted to brewerfan.net. -- Crazyk1294
  7. My guess is that the final roster spot is coming down to Kapler & Gwynn. Just a total guess. Given that Gross has a spot on the 25-man, and that Kapler complements him by being a RH batter, I'd guess it's Tony that's down. It'd just make the most sense, as Gwynn can get everyday playing-time in Nashville. I'd worry if Dillon is in actual danger of not making the 25-man - he makes too much sense to not have with the big club imo.
  8. Right, you re-posted while remaining totally oblivious to the report that's he's been working on taking as many pitches as possible... which is inherently going to lead to fewer hits & more Ks. What's your concern? If you have a serious concern about Rickie's D, and point to how horrid that has been so far this ST, I certainly can't begrudge you that - it's not like Rickie's been working on biffing as many balls as he can! But to fret that he hasn't been hitting... when his approach has basically been to work on things at the plate excluding hitting... seems like unnecessary worrying to me. The original intent of the thread was to generate opinions on whether or not his start was concerning. (I think, for the most part, it was successful returning these ideas) I agree with you here.
  9. Not the first time & it certainly won't be the last that Haudricourt is nowhere near being informative or even just correct. It's ok, maybe once he's been on the beat for 10+ years he might put the effort in to learn the nuances.
  10. Lincecum is a nice building block to start with. The funny part to me is that by the time the Giants might be ready to compete again, Tim will be in his mid or late 20s - and the team would probably be best served to trade him to help re-stock their system. They could conceivably be contending by then, but dealing Lincecum away after another successful season or two could be the perfect timing. Many feel his delivery is cause for some injury concern as he ages. He's a young stud that to mention trading now sounds foolish, but yikes is that organization in a bad place.
  11. So you're provided a totally legitimate & logical answer as to why he's "struggling", yet you still seek out this doom & gloom? It seems almost like you just want to go on about this regardless.
  12. Shouse got plenty of work last year, and I said he could be used as a LOOGY and a mop-up role.
  13. Wow - Sam's created a monster. As Luke Skywalker once said, "I'm with you too."
  14. With the depth of the 'pen, Manny could be limited better than Villavueva was last season. He wouldn't be the first-best option there like Carlos became. Have him in as a LOOGY or mop-up role, then stretch him out in AAA, and call him back up for the rotation.
  15. Blisters can linger for a season, but are they usually more troublesome than that? Beckett & Sheets have both had short-term trouble.
  16. The first time is always special
  17. ^^ What he said. Pull the trigger on this one. Abreu's more advanced in years than Pat the Bat. Theriot is exceedingly replaceable.
  18. SS: Hardy '08 vs. Hardy '07 I like to think we might improve here as well. Hardy had a little bit a of a down-year defensively at SS, and I think he can do better. I recall someone posting that Hardy feels like he can play deeper up the middle with Billy at 3B. That alone should make JJ look a lot better, and I think we'll see some tangible improvement overall.
  19. I have said I think what Duncan did was disgusting. I'm not going to go any further with this, it's obvious you think taking the catcher out in ST is "tuff-guy stuff", and I think it's a hard, clean play. Nobody's going to change their mind, so further argument at this point is just static. 100% agreement.
  20. It's not the stolen base that's pooh-poohed by sabermetrics. Getting caught stealing is pooh-poohed. I understand this... just meant that the necessary high success rate is influenced by the defense's efforts to make SB difficult.
  21. Looks to me like Rosenthal is just roster-checking on 4th OFs there - as opposed to having a hot scoop. Just my opinion. It wouldn't make much sense imo for the Crew to deal away Gross right now.
  22. If the run scoring (or not) is no big whoop, then why is the catcher blocking the plate? He was fielding a throw. It wasn't like he was four steps up the line thumping his chest as the ball was being relayed home. The runner, otoh, was gearing up to hit the C at least halfway to home plate. I understand that injury can occur on a hook-slide, but ask yourself which play is more likely to induce injury - a hook slide, or a full-grown man running full speed & lowering his shoulder into another man's upper-body? Don't you think that's a bit of an over-generalization after *one* tough play at the plate in which *the catcher was blocking the plate*, making a hook slide or feet first slide just as dangerous as bowling over the catcher? Except that it wasn't 'one tough play' this ST. Crawford did it the previous week, too.
  23. Interesting read... seemingly of the Andy Rooney variety, though. He seems to contradict himself a bunch when discussing how newer statistical analysis doesn't account for the intangibles of ballplayers - but the examples he presents tend to actually be addressed. If the stolen base is a weapon of minimal importance, then why pitch from the stretch? Let the other team steal-the numbers indicate that it doesn't noticeably improve run scoring. Focus on getting the hitter out and don't worry about the guys on the base paths. I have never read any sabermetrician advocate that the benefits of pitching from the windup with men on is so great that it is worth letting the opposing team run at will (poor Will). Why is it somewhat insignificant to ignore the running game on offense while putting so much effort to preventing it on defense? Isn't the sabermetrical pooh-pooh-ing of stealing bases largely due to the fact that pitchers/defenses do so much to limit it? A hit-and-run creates a hole that turns a double play ground ball into a seeing-eye single. Or, likely just as often, it pulls a fielder right to the path of a line-drive that would've been a single to the RC gap, and the runner would have made it to 3B without a hit-&-run. The more information we have, the better. Despite some protests, neither side possesses the ultimate truth of the game. I hope that one day the factions will embrace each other and work together to explore the game to new heights of understanding. Ummm... we have this already. Every team has stats guys in their employ now. What is this guy talking about?
  24. The first thing I thought when I saw this thread title was, 'Man - that must've been one heckuva turtle-head!'
  25. But he's from the British Isles - it's not like the game was invented there or anything, so why would they have access to good equipment?
