  1. Holy crap I can't believe I didn't think to post this sooner - and I'm really gonna enjoy this thread for wins 75 through 79! http://homepage.mac.com/rmansfield/thislamp/files/page0_blog_entry115_1.jpg
  2. Given the various mistakes the four-letter network makes on a daily basis (and brewer255's great thread "Chad Cordero is on the Brewers!"), I want to start a thread in which we can chronicle certain and/or specific instances that drive us crazy. For me, that's pretty much any time Joe Morgan is allowed to speak into a live microphone. The guy is such an idiot, and I honestly can't figure out which is greater: his stupidity or his self-adoration. I know the network is notorious for calling CoCo "Chad Cordero," and their "analysts" rarely have anything to offer aside from incorrect dissections of games from which they saw 3 or 4 highlights. Hopefully there are others out there who share my loathing of ESPN, because I know that at any given moment more classic mistakes could be happening. Sorry if a thread like this already exists (couldn't find one in a search), and remember - you can't spell ESPN without the E!

  4. yea, we were sort of posting at the same moments in the game last night, and it was readily clear to me, DJ - and a post that long in blue wouldn't have been as funny, fwiw. Nice to know you've got my back, though AC & don http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/wink.gif

  6. come on Brewers - keep finding a way to win in spite of his horrid decision-making! Great W!
  7. Hey - he used Cordero in the 8th today to relieve a reeling Turnbow. None of us dumb fans would have thought of that! Jenkins - 2 AB v. LHP (iirc both with men on base), Nix - 1 AB v. LHP, Mench - 0 AB v. LHP Counsell - 1 AB v. LHP, Dillon - 0 AB v. LHP
  8. No Mench against Stanton in the 7th? Double Steal/Hit-and-Run with a free-swinger at the plate? This man is hurting our chances to win in almost any different kind of way. NAY. EDIT: Another "sacrifice a sure AB for Braun" defensive replacement? AARRRGHHHHHH! http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/mad.gif
  9. At least he's an easy guy to root for - never gives you any reason to think he's not giving it his all
  10. The more I watch the stretch run, the more I realize just how much work Melvin & Co. have ahead of them this offseason. The pitching staff as a whole is in need of a revamping, especially in the bullpen. I would not be surprised to see more than one of our SPs shipped in the offseason, primarily for relief help. On top of that, my concern is whether or not we have enough trading chips to get anything of good value in return without giving away what remaining little depth we have (of advanced players) in our minor league system. Re-signing Linebrink seems almost a necessity, Turnbow may be our lone "valuable" trading chip (but why trade from a position of need to try and help fill that same position?) from the 'pen, and Shouse's value is made clearer with each passing game. I worry about teams figuring out Shouse after him being featured so prominantly this season. I don't want to hijack the thread, but I'm really getting concerned about our pitching as a whole in 2008. SP - Sheets, Gallardo, Villanueva, Suppan, Bush, Capuano, Parra, (Vargas? he seems a perfect non-tender candidate) RP - Turnbow, Shouse, Wise, Linebrink (FA), King (FA - hope he's back), Spurling (ughh), Stetter (http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/mad.gif), Aquino (http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/sick.gif), Jackson (?) Yikes. That's a scary overall picture, sadly. While I feel that Bush & Capuano will return more to form in '08, Parra has much to prove at the MLB level (though I remain optimistic), and who knows how the younger arms of YoGa & Villy will respond to the heaviest workloads in their young careers? For the 'pen, TBow, Shouse, & Wise are all decent options, but beyond that it seems entirely up in the air. Out of upcoming LHRP FAs, honestly, Ray King is about as nice as available. The Cubs' Eyre is eligible, but I doubt they let him go, and if they do, he'll likely be in very high demand. RHRP FAs obviously are of greater number, and there are some decent options. Kerry Wood is appx. the class of the bunch, but again I doubt the Cubs letting him go. I guess at this point I simply wish we had some arms available within the organization, as spending on relief pitching is almost a complete gamble, and we have much to upgrade.
  11. stettered indeed. Mitch Stetter hurts my brain. Too lividly angry to post anything coherent.
  12. I more often hear the old school guy you describe referred to a the 'fireman' Danny Plesac! Nice post, SoCal - not just for making me think of the lefty, either.
  13. But, I am just a dumb fan, so what do I know. Shut up! Why don't you get a couch and put it in the dugout!
  14. It's got a sort of hipster-wannabe kitschy appeal, from what I've seen game. It's on tap at every bar I've visited so far in Portland. And it's probably due to the fact that it's cheap (nothing wrong with that) http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/smile.gif I'm a big fan of the "big beers" that a lot of Wisconsin microbreweries are doing right now. They take a style of beer (Stout, Pale Ale, Bock. etc.) and they blow it up and take it to extremes. From the (few) brewers I've talked to, they love being able to brew like this - no rules for what they get to do, just start off the base beer and then get to do what they love to do to the max. I've found these brews are most often home runs (but occasionally whiffs) as long as the hops don't scare you off.
  15. I'll keep my eyes open for Big Yeti - pretty sure the local grocery store (there aren't any liquor stores nearby, and I have no car) doesn't carry that one. Sounds good - even though stout isn't my favorite brew. I'd try it just on your enthusiasm alone. but it's one that you've got to be careful with as it can put you on your keister. Mmmm....beer that puts me on my keeeeeeisterrrr....
  16. how does a .672 OPS at AA translate into better offense than Estrada?
  17. best. avatar. (for this thread) everrrr. EDIT: Mmmm, Full Sail Pale Ale....as good to say as it is to drink...
  18. me neither, though I used to be. I think - in both cases - it's that they're sweet. I will say, though, that they were my "gateway beer" into trying stuff aside from domestics. http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/smile.gif
  19. I think the point in hoping for change away from Estrada is that he's not exactly cheap. I know market values have gone up, but he's likely to get at least $5 mil in arbitration. I simply feel we can get a backstop that's significantly better defensively, and - at worst - a slight downgrade offensively (due to OBP's great value) for much cheaper than $5 mil./year. And I will honestly take a C who is much better defensively for such an offensive downgrade. C is the one position where that can really be justified. I'm not talking about a .215 hitter, but someone that hits in the .250/.260 neighborhood and actually works a pitcher & can draw some BBs.
  20. aha - and I say that is "at all times," and you say, "every great once in a while"? Do I actually understand my enemy? http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/smile.gif I just view that chance, however slight, as being the responsibility of the manager to create whenever possible, as opposed to when he feels like the time is right, and think that we certainly will be able to upgrade in this regard.
  21. Don't know if anyone has recommended Hot Fuzz or not, but this movie seriously had me laughing to the point of tears multiple times. From the same guys that did Shaun of the Dead, and though that movie is probably the better spoof, imho Hot Fuzz was much funnier. EDIT: Forgot to mention that the plotline is incredibly well-developed, with tons of foreshadowing and subtle clues as to what's going on. I don't want to spoil the movie at all, so I stop there. But this is simply a genius comedy.
  22. bkbc, I don't know if it's going to come down to whether or not we want to re-sign him, but that the bidding price is going to be too high, given larger markets' needs for CP
  23. no - my "12/20 v. 14/20" was simply to illustrate how you describe the differences in the choices Yost has available to him in-game - that one option is only a little better than another, so the move being made or not doesn't really matter. It has nothing to do with 'Yost vs. some other manager' - sorry, thought my disclaimer made that clear. http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/smile.gif Fwiw, I think his pattern of poor decision-making has cost us more than 2 games this year, and I tend to believe that he's been doing this for years now, not just this one - which is why I submit my verdict before the end of this year.
  24. so does the ridding of contracts make anyone think re-signing Cordero is possible/plausible? Or would the freed-up $18.9 mil. be better spent elsewhere?
  25. this is exactly why we will never agree, logan. I think any amount of advantage that a manager can add to his team's chances to win is valuable, you tend to postulate that since nearly any margin can be described as small, it doesn't really matter what the manager does. It's essentially like saying that winning 12 out of 20 games is just as good as winning 14 out of 20 games, since it's a small difference. And no, that's not a reference to Yost, just a numerical example. EDIT: so don't view the thread anymore, robbo. Your condescending tone isn't exactly a positive contribution to what is a serious discussion - whether you like said discussion or not. I would never presume to tell you what you think is important, nor would I mock you for it.
