  1. My guess on the 'short leash', if it's indeed true, is an umbrella policy for DM. If the team starts slowly, can Yost, prove you're 'proactive' on the situation, then if they continue to underachieve with Sveum, DM can fall back on the fact that he was forced to go with an interim manager - and serach for a new head honcho in the following offseason, thus buying himself at least one more year. Not sure if that's it or not, but it certainly is conceivable that if DM brought in someone new this offseason, and the team didn't have success in 2008, the GM's head could be the one on the chopping block. I think saying your manager has a short leash is a slippery slope. Perhaps this is a precursor to some sort of, "Well, after we re-evaluated and really closely examined the season, we feel that Yost is not the best candidate for the job..." turn of the tide sometime over the winter. It'll be interesting to see how this all plays out.
  2. I second "Today" by the Pumpkins - it's not too slow/lovey-dovey to be applicable to a football highlight montage.
  3. DougJones, you make me laugh. If I weren't convinced of your masculinity I would guess that you were some girl Ned Yost stood up for your junior prom. Your hatred of him just seems illogical to me. Classy stuff here. DJ's loathing of Yost can be called a lot of things. Illogical is not one of them, as he routinely cites specific examples/evidence to support his stance.
  4. Jamey Carroll has your back, sbrylski. Tossed something like, 'Hey, I wanna just go celebrate with my team' Craig Sager's way tonight. Brilliant. What's bugging me? BAD GRAMER
  5. sure you can, when he can still manage a .374 OBP. Besides, there's no reason to assume he'll be the leadoff man in 2008 yet. To think of how high that OBP can climb now that he can actually hit again too, is just scary.
  6. I can't believe you consider the two in bold-face problematic. Those ratios are fine, especially considering the power numbers involved. In fact, the only one on that list who really needs to improve BB/K is Braun. I understand why you left out Corey Hart (not an infielder), but his ratio was 36/99. Take a look at this list, post-ASB: Braun: 18/75 Hardy: 12/25 Fielder: 49/49 Weeks: 47/58 Hart: 13/53 Get to know RZR (revised zone rating) a bit, as it will be very helpful in assessing players defensively. Simply using error totals, as mentioned, is very misleading. I'm not saying the infield defense doesn't need to get better - it does. However, the Brewers plan to keep Braun at 3B and accept less than solid defense, so I don't think we can reasonably expect anything but incremental improvement(s).
  7. So...you're a sadist? http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/smile.gif
  8. Mainly to don1481, but to anyone else who cares, I posted this in lithium75's "Doug Melvin: Is he alive?" thread (from Melvin's interview on 1250 AM) - "...and I'm a big believer that Chris [Capuano] maybe should've stayed in the rotation, but I understand, you know, why we did it. Um, and then we started tinkering with the rotation, and then Villanueva went into the rotation later on after we sent him down, and then Gallardo went into the rotation by need because of Ben Sheets and I - I just think that you become a weaker - uh, there's some weaker links then in the bullpen, and that I think ended up happening. I think that if we could've - you want 100 starts out of your top three starters. They have to stay injury-free, they have to perform well, and if we'd been able to just keep Gallardo and Villanueva in the bullpen, they'd have given us those innings - to get to the 8th and 9th inning, which has probably hurt us the most - the 6th and 7th inning. So I think the rotation, overall, has hurt us a little bit in that regard, and there's not much you can do about it - you just go out there and play." -- Doug Melvin Take that for what it's worth, but I was shocked to hear the bold-faced part drop from Melvin's mouth, and some of the rest that follows sounds a bit like covering his tracks in case anyone would say he'd slammed/criticized Yost. Yes, I know this is coming from the guy with the upside-down picture of Yost as his avatar. http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/wink.gif
  9. Considering how Cappy gets hit the third time through the lineup... You can say this for almost literally every starter in the game.
  10. I was at this game. Is it bad that I can recognize what games I was at just from one picture? No, that's a certifiable badge of courage and validity! http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/smokin.gif And thanks, hawing for posting that pic! I couldn't find it in my search earlier today, and was bummed.
  11. Good luck for us to only have to play one of Boston & NYY. It would've sucked to have missed the O's and caught the Yanks. But not these O's - http://brewcrew.mlblogs.com/brewcrewmlbblogscom/images/brigade5141_2.jpg
  12. I don't ignore that, but I agree some do.
  13. ibtl...http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/wink.gif I think King is a more likely choice to be our second LOOGY, but that's just my guess. My money would be on Stetter being in AAA to start the year. EDIT: With Estrada having pocketed $3.4 mil for this season, I think it's more reasonable to assume a salary of at least $4 mil., and probably closer to $5 for '08, no?
  14. exactly what I thought, end - but I refrained from piling on...until now, I guess http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/wink.gif
  15. Jenkins and Mench would put up pretty poor numbers despite playing with a platoon advantage all season. To be fair to Kevin, against lefties he did exactly as advertised: .314/.343/.558/.901. Trouble was, he had nearly as many ABs v. RHP (132) as he did against LHP (156 - line of .212/.261/.303 - uuggghhh). Jenkins, on the other hand had 355/65 (v.RH/v.LH) ABs, and could only muster a line of .262/.326/.482/.808 against RHP. Not awful, but certainly not in line with what he's done in his career v. RHP. Fwiw, Jenks played great at Miller Park, but poorly on the road. At least in his (potential) last year in Milwaukee he showed the home fans the Jenks we know & love!
  16. Jenks is a youngster in the eyes of the Giants! They'll probably haze him or have him shining Vizquel's shoes! http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/laugh.gif
  17. They obviously love their veteran ballplayers, SF. I'd say there's a decent chance for that happening.
  18. That's a neat anecdote, robbo - I'd bet they'll remember that as a pretty significant event, which would be cool!
  19. Unless he signs with the Twins, Cubs (heck, anyone in our division), or BoSux, I have a strong suspicion that team will become one of my favorites...http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/smile.gif
  20. that the one where everyone has a disgusting string(s) of cheese hanging from their mouths? Absolutely disgusting. Haven't eaten at a TB in roughly 10 years, and they do nothing to make me want to come back. In fact, they tend to do things to ensure I'll never return.
  21. I mentioned this in another thread, but kudos to Yost for visibly pulling Jenkins today, earning him the sendoff he deserved. http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/happy.gif Well done, Ned.
  22. this afternoon's send off brought a tear to my eye. it feels like somewhat of a changing of the guard. Ditto to both, schlitz & jlau.
  23. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/f6/Australian_State_Route_83.svg/640px-Australian_State_Route_83.svg.png http://members.aol.com/swankivy/neg1log.jpg
  24. And just like that...all my frustrations with him disappeared, and the only thing I could feel was sorrow. This man was my favorite player in the game for a long, long time, and it's hard to think of the Brewers without seeing #5 in the outfield. I know there are legitimate critiques of his approach at the plate, and that he whiffed far more often than we'd have liked, but I am sincerely going to miss Jenkins if he is indeed not back after this season. He was here through all the painful losing, and was a class act the whole way. A big tip of the hat to Ned Yost, who was classy enough to take advantage of the situation and give Geoff the send-off he deserves. Some may not share my sentiments, but Geoff Jenkins is a Brewer that I'll never forget. http://www.jimbo.info/weblog/archives/jenkins.jpg http://thediamondangle.com/archive/sep03/brewers/jenkins1_big.jpg http://cache.viewimages.com/xc/375434.jpg?v=1&c=ViewImages&k=2&d=17A4AD9FDB9CF193B3EA2C03450C94864D29D56B75BE3736284831B75F48EF45 http://graphics.jsonline.com/graphics/sports/brew/img/mar03/geoff301.jpg http://www.cbc.ca/gfx/topstory/sports/jenkins_geoff0523.jpg http://mlbplayers.mlb.com/images/2007/04/02/FbEPO45m.jpg http://www.jsonline.com/graphics/sports/brew/img/may06/brew0517.jpg
