  1. I don't think there is anyone out there who would be the 'answer'. When Weeks comes back, depending on what happens with McGehee, Wigginton could take over third or if nothing else, he would be a nice bat off the bench which is currently full of singles hitters. I know people hate on him for his defense, but Carroll is mediocre defensively as well.
  2. This pretty much forces Melvin's hand. He needs to deal for a vet SS/2B or 3B/2B at this point.
  3. I think the Cubs and their fans would consider the Fukudome signing to be a major failure. Just another overhyped international bonus baby. I'm not saying he's a bad player, but he definitely did not live up to the hype- and wasn't worth the contract that he got.
  4. Now that Weeks is out- Barmes is obviously the best option, followed by Wigginton (not sure if you'd move McGehee to 2nd or put Wigginton there). I wouldn't argue with adding Furcal either- he's starting to heat up.
  5. I'd prefer Marlon Byrd, but my guess is that he would be much more costly in terms of prospects.
  6. All things equal (salary), I'd still choose Morgan over Rios. When you factor in what Rios is getting paid, it's the no-brainer of no-brainers. Melvin had better run fast unless Rios comes with a $35 million check. People want to send McGehee to Nashville but they want Rios when he's been worse at the plate, when there is already a viable option in center? One man's trash is another man's treasure, I guess.
  7. Alex Rios? Why would they want to take on one of the 5 or 10 worst contracts in the majors? Where would he play? That makes no sense. As for infield help- as I stated above, unless they are dealing Ramirez, I don't see the point. Thornton would be nice, but I'm not taking on a stiff to get him.
  8. Bob Betts was great. I was really surprised and disappointed that they made no mention of him during the last game at County Stadium ceremonies. Im mean a simple "Drive Home Safely" would have done it!Every time I attend a game, Betts is sadly missed, and unfortunately he is largely forgotten. The best in the business in my opinion.
  9. If I'm Seattle, I'm not letting Trader Jack make another deal unless it is a salary dump for the rest of the year. I have to think he's gone at the end of the year.
  10. I'd actually think about Dunn, but the White Sox would have to contribute a significant sum. I'm talking in the $10-15 million range. I highly doubt that they would do that so soon into the contract even though they are in payroll shedding mode.
  11. I have no interest whatsoever in Beckham. In my view, he's one of the most overrated players over the past decade or so. I think Gamel will be a better hitter, if he ever gets a chance. Ramirez does interest me, but I'd have to think pretty hard about putting Gamel in the deal.
  12. Exactly. No way do I want Rodriguez at that salary. It would almost certainly preclude the signing of at least one of Marcum/Greinke. I'd take either of them over Wandy for the next several years without even a second thought. Marcum for the long term may come a little cheaper, while Greinke won't be too much more (I'm thinking $16-$20 million per unless he regains his Cy Young form in the next year and a third).
  13. I think Barmes would fit nicely. I can't see why the Astros would hold him. What kind of compensation will they get in the form of draft picks for him? I wonder if they'd have interest in Farris or Green plus a decent pitcher from the low minors?
  14. Wandy Rodriguez = Randy Wolf. Not bad, but certainly not worth adding another one at that contract.
  15. The Giants just beat us 2 out of 3 and Lincecum didn't pitch in that series. And now they are adding Beltran. I don't like the way we match up against the Giants unless we improve our roster fairly significantlyFrankly, I really don't like the matchups against any good pitcher right now, especially on the road. That is subject to change if a few guys get hot at once.
  16. Beltran going to S.F. really doesn't worry me. It's highly doubtful that Beltran will have the impact that Pat Burrell had last season, and now that Pat Burrell is being Pat Burrell again and Johnny Ben... I mean, Buster Posey is gone, that lineup really isn't one to be feared.
  17. Wily Mo is a AAAA player. That may be true that Pena is AAAA- but I'd prefer him over Counsell, who's AARP.
  18. Every fanbase has its village idiots. I can see the Pirates going on a tailspin after this and using the call as an excuse down the road. ESPN would love those twists for their storyline. "Lovable Losers: Flag Hopes Dashed by Ump".
  19. The second angle from the CF camera actually makes it look like he missed the tag. Didn't the Brewers score a winning run on a similar type play this year (only the throw beat the runner by 3 steps instead of the 5 steps last night)?
  20. Jackson is probably a Cy Young candidate in St. Louis considering what they've done over the past several years with some of the steaming garbage they've had down there.
  21. Counsell is overmatched, case closed. I can't help but notice that some of his apologists are among those who are beating the drums the most loudly for Yuni/McGehee- and to a lesser extent Kotsay. Why is that? I don't need to see a WAR statistic to know that Counsell is done out there, but his WAR is lower than Yuni's. I guess I don't understand why it is OK that he's wasting a roster spot. Down the stretch, this team needs a competent pinch hitter- especially against righties, and Counsell is an automatic out. Time to shut him down, give him Suppan's pillow or something. Get someone who can hit, even if it's a Jim Thome who can't play the field anymore.
  22. I see a WAR of -.7 for Counsell. I will admit that I'm not very knowledgeable about the WAR concept, but I'm thinking that figure is horrible for a bench player. I guess that I don't see how people can be indifferent to Counsell when he is sitting on one of the 4 non-catcher backup spots on the team. I have defended Kotsay, but it's sad when he is by far your best bench player.
  23. "I think we are pointing out the same events but interpreting it way differently, but these are my recollection between ages 16 and 20." I completely agree. Nevermind was huge. Almost everyone had that CD. Teen Spirit in particular was spun heavily even on Top 40 stations. The influence that Nirvana had on the genre while they were active was widely recognized at the time. At the same time, I think they got even 'bigger' after Cobain's death. He became almost a mythical figure immediately. I think a lot of people who may not have been into the group before started by snapping up the Unplugged disc and then moved onto the back catalog. It's kind of ironic that Cobain fought against the mainstream his entire career- only to have his death basically cause the group to become a mainstream. It's interesting to speculate what would have happened to the group had Cobain lived. Would they have kind of fizzled out like most of their contemporaries or would they have transcended things?
  24. It would be the height of stupidity to trade an asset like Hart for a rental like Beltran UNLESS they have an extension for Fielder in the can, and they need to shed salary to make it work. The odds of that are probably .1%, so I say bad deal here.
  25. It's a complete joke. He looked like the 10 year old little leaguer getting his at-bat against the league flamethrower tonight. I'm sure he's a great guy, but I think it's time for him to get a Suppan-esque injury for the month of August. If he wants to end his career with dignity, he can be brought back to the active roster on September 1. On a team with 12 pitchers, there is simply no excuse for him to be holding a roster spot when someone like Boggs/Gamel/Green are toiling in Nashville.
