  1. Ortiz definitely gets a pass, probably because of the sports media's love of all things Boston. I'm not a fan of his, and if I had to bet, I'd say he's still juicing.
  2. I think that it's very unfortunate that this report slipped out there. There should be no rush at all here. Place Jean on the restricted list, and let him set his own timetable. I'm sure that he will contact the team when he's ready.
  3. I'm glad that they passed on Morales. As bad as Reynolds has been at the plate for the past six weeks, it's debatable whether Morales has been any better. Overbay has outperformed Morales by a ton in that stretch, and picked up the slack for Reynolds somewhat. All that said, I'm hoping that they are kicking the tires on Morneau. A deal for Morneau/Hawkins makes a ton of sense, but the price will likely be steep. I really sense that the Brewers are going to have difficulty making any significant moves unless teams are willing to take guys from the low minors. The cupboard is bare when it comes to near MLB ready talent.
  4. Well, I won't be listening to talk radio or watching any sports networks for the next few days. I cannot imagine how much this topic is going to be beat to death in what is probably the slowest day or two of sports for the year.
  5. I fully expect Cruz and whatever other scrub the Cardinals put back there to single-handedly produce more runs than the entire Brewers lineup this weekend. After that, they will probably bring Pierzynski in and he will roll back the clock 10 years.
  6. I'm not that worried about the Cubs moving forward. They look to have lots of good positional players set to emerge in the next several years, but no pitching. Yes, they may be able to swing some rental type deals with some of these prospects that overlap positions, but the price for pitching is generally very steep- both monetarily for free agents or for prospects. If you are going to acquire frontline pitching via trade, you need to find a special circumstance AND be prepared to outbid everyone else. Though he's probably not a franchise arm, guys like Samardijza don't grow on trees and won't be easy to replace. You also have to figure that roughly half of these guys are going to bust. The Cubs' luck and/or track record in the transition from the minors to the majors hasn't been that great over the past 50 years. They've had a lot of 'can't miss' guys miss there over the years.
  7. For some reason, Coulter was the first name that popped into my head when I thought of what kind of return Colorado would want for Morneau. That would be a tough deal for me to make.
  8. I'm too tired to get on my normal soapbox regarding Epstein, so I'll just say that I'm glad that these guys were traded out of the division. Either one or both would have been great acquisitions for the Cardinals.
  9. The bottom line here is that if this move is successful and the Bucks put an entertaining product on the court, any ill will toward this move will be forgotten. I've heard some use Attanasio as a paragon of virtue. How soon people forget how he usurped Melvin and fired Yost in a hotel room with a week and a half left in the season. I felt much worse for Yost than I do for Drew in this case. The way that I look at it is Drew should not have been back. I cannot think of one positive that he brought to the table outside of the draft pick. Does anyone think that he would have been a long term coach here? If not, why keep him around? It's unfortunate that he had to read about this in the news, but it's not like he was a long term employee with a track record of success.
  10. I don't get all the moral outrage from the media here. The bottom line is that Drew did an awful job, if you win less than 20% of your games at the pro level you should expect to go. There were also issues in the locker room, so it's not like he had a handle on the off court stuff either. The leak in the press was unfortunate, but they were unable to make a move until they worked out compensation with New Jersey. I'm not shedding a single tear for Drew exiting with a golden parachute. All that said, I'm not a huge fan of Kidd, but at least they are trying to shake things up.
  11. How many times do they need to see Bianchi to realize that he can't play? Why do they insist on using Herrera in the outfield? Makes no sense. Schafer or Gindl should have been the call. This is why I'm not upset about using a roster spot on Wang. It'd likely be wasted on Bianchi anyway.
  12. Lots of teams have useless back end guys. The issue here is for some reason these guys insist on having 8 guys in the pen, when starters have been averaging into the 7th inning. Big time overkill. Cull the number down to seven, and add an outfielder. Use Wang as the long man, no need to keep Figaro around to pitch two times a week.
  13. Bottom line, Wang's presence has not hurt this team at all. If they had a leaky bullpen and/or multiple starters who consistently can't out of the 5th or 6th inning it would be an issue, as it stands that is not the case. Going further, there is no need at all for eight relievers on this team, the starters have averaged over 6 innings a start. Seems as though this team has always carried one or two relievers too many in recent years. If/when Henderson and Thornburg are ready to return, some tough decisions may have to be made. That said, I'm guessing there will be an injury somewhere that will make that easier. For the time being, send Figaro down, and add an outfielder for heaven's sake.
  14. I'm not a fan of bringing Kidd in, but have to admit that I'm happy because this means that Hammond/Drew are likely gone. Best case scenario: They 'miss' on Kidd, but have reached the point of no return in regards to severing ties with the current regime.
  15. I think that we will be hearing Morneau's name a lot in the next month. The problem is that the Rockies will likely be demanding a good return, as they should.
  16. I agree. I think that you stand pat and take whichever of the two is available. It's a no-brainer that no one is really going to be able to second guess. No need to get cute here, the pressure is all on the Cavs.
  17. If they are truly offering that, Cleveland would almost certainly make the deal.
  18. I'd take anything at the bottom of the first round for Ersan. I just don't see a role for him on this team, but you'd think he'd be a good role player on a playoff team.
  19. I'm going to worry about the Cardinals until they are officially eliminated from the race. It seems like the more hurdles that they face, the 'rosier' they come out smelling. I have to wonder if some of that luck hasn't transferred to the Brewers this season, as it seems like a lot of breaks have been falling their way so far.
  20. Don't know. Outside of Lucroy and Gomez, he's the Brewer MVP if you ask me. If he hadn't stepped in the way he has, could have been a lot of extra L's thus far. He's been getting hit pretty hard lately, but that's the nature of the beast with closers. Only 2 blown saves, Kimbrel has 4.
  21. I highly doubt that Embiid falls any further than to 5. For a team in full tank mode, he is the ideal pick, and the risk/reward is there for the 4 or 5 pick.
  22. This has to take Embiid off the Bucks' board. Supposedly the Cavs like Parker, but if they were able to get 3 and 10 from Philly, they'd probably be able to snag Embiid and still have another lottery pick, which is a nice haul. As for the Bucks, you have to think that it's going to be either Parker or Wiggins at this point. Personally, I'm not sure which one I prefer. Kind of reminds me off the Allen/Marbury debate way back when where Parker is safe and Wiggins is flashy. Lots of Bucks fans were upset when they settled for Ray, but that turned out pretty well. It's going to be an interesting week for sure.
  23. Kirk Gibson has a well deserved reputation as one of the biggest jerks in the game, so I'm glad this is making him look stupid. Normally, I'm all for retaliation, but I'm not so sure in this case unless they escalate things even more. Why risk injury?
  24. Going to get DFA'd. Would it hurt to take a flyer? I don't think he'd be any worse than Herrera.
  25. I doubt if we will see Nelson for at least another month. Estrada has been horrible for the past month, but I don't think that Fiers would be much better.
