  1. This is really getting insane. We are not too far off from seeing average ticket prices over 50 bucks. TV money cannot sustain all of this.
  2. I see Kottaras just got released by the Cubs. That might explain Wolfie's actions. Maybe he thinks that they are a package deal.
  3. What in the world is Randy Wolf thinking right now?
  4. If true, this is going way under the radar. Over the past few years, whenever Smart was linked to a job, it was all over ESPN and the like. As for why he would come here, it was home. Also, I'd think that the fact that the recruiting hotbed of Chicago is ripe for the picking would be enticing. I'm sure that the mega-bucks that they are throwing around at him wouldn't hurt either.
  5. I agree with this. Overbay will start a couple of times a week, and pinch hit/serve as a defensive replacement. I guess that I don't get why people are all up in arms about this. Overbay is obviously past his prime, but I don't see a problem with him as the last guy on the roster. As for Reynolds, he's averaged almost 30 homers a year in the bigs. The average will be low and he will strike out a ton, but I don't think it's a stretch that he hits 25 or 30 homers, which would be a huge upgrade from last year. To me, losing Francisco is a non factor, as his upside at the plate is likely somewhere around Reynolds' career norms, and the guy may be the worst defensive player that I've ever seen.... he made 10 errors at first base last year in partial duty in a partial season for heaven's sake.
  6. If Baylor plays anywhere close to what they did tonight, no one is beating them. That said, you have to think they are due for a letdown.
  7. I think Mark Rogers instead of Jared Weaver is a good one. Before the draft, Weaver was widely regarded as the best prospect. I've got to think that the only reason they passed on him was 'signability'.
  8. I've said it before, and I'll say it again.... Fransisco is custom made for the Japanese league. That said, he'll probably bounce around a bit in MLB baseball before he goes there.
  9. Actually, I'd put him as an above average first round pick for the Brewers. He never did anything in the bigs, but his numbers in his early minor league career allowed the Brewers to make the Sabathia deal. For the worst number one pick ever, there are plenty of choices. In particular, the Brewers made some truly awful selections during the early-mid 70's and most of the 90's. Factoring everything in however, I'd probably go with Kenny Henderson, the 5th overall pick in '91. First of all, he didn't sign. Even worse than that, Manny Ramirez, Shawn Green, and Cliff Floyd were amongst the next 10 picks. After a few years, in college, Henderson was drafted again by the Padres, was injured and never made it past single A.
  10. I think that you start the season with both playing every day. After a month or six weeks, the decision will likely be made for you, based on performance or lack thereof. It likely wouldn't be a true platoon anyway, they aren't going to keep Weeks to play once or twice a week against lefties and pinch hit. If they keep both, one will probably rot on the bench, and my money would be on Scooter for that. Send him to Nashville and let him play.
  11. A little shaky today, but the kid has earned a spot if you ask me. Send Scooter down to Nashville, and he can be the 7th guy in the pen (maybe the 8th depending on whether they keep 5 OF).
  12. There is zero point to keep both Weeks and Scooter on the roster.
  13. I agree that Creighton is the biggest hurdle for the Badgers to get to the Final Four. It will all hinge on how much damage McDermott can do. He has the ability to single-handedly shoot down the Badgers (a la Stephen Curry a few years back) if he is on. If they can limit him, I like their chances. Arizona would be a slugfest, but if the Badgers could shoot at a decent clip, I think they'd be OK. That said, I'm not convinced that Arizona will even hit the Elite 8, and the Badgers match up pretty well against the other threats on that side of the bracket (I'd actually be more concerned with Oklahoma State as opposed to SDSU or Oklahoma).
  14. A no-brainer to me. Is keeping a guy like Zach Duke really worth losing a talent like this? I say no.
  15. I wonder if the Badgers are a lock for a two at this point. Based on their win tonight, I would think that Iowa State will be in the equation. I'm still working on the assumption that the winner of Duke/Virginia will get the 4th one, the loser will probably get a 3. However, let's say that Virginia and Michigan win tomorrow. You'd have one of those two as a one and one as a two, then Villanova, Iowa State and Kansas and the loser of the ACC game as competition with the Badgers for one of the three spots. I think that Nova and one of the two Big 12 teams are locks, so it may come down to the Badgers and Duke. I think that they should probably be pulling for Duke tomorrow just to be sure, as they would almost certainly get a seed higher than Virginia in that case. I'm going to say they get the two and play Wofford. Eastern Kentucky would also be a strong possibility, but I don't know the policy on scheduling first round games between teams that have already played. Wofford could actually be a fairly tough matchup as they are very well coached and can shoot. The Badgers should be able to eat them alive with their size though.
  16. I'd think that the Badgers are already penciled in for Milwaukee. Money talks, and placing the Badgers in Milwaukee will easily sell the place out. The tickets start at $195 each for the six games.
  17. Point taken. From what I remember, the Angels were prepared to make him a huge offer. I also remember the Cubs in the mix (they wanted him to play third, I'm pretty sure). Yount did waffle a bit, largely because he wanted to make sure the Brewers were going to be competitive moving forward. '89 was a really bad year for the Brewers, they were the trendy choice to win the division, but they didn't deliver. Sheffield caused a bunch of problems as well. The Dave Parker signing helped set the stage for Robin coming back, and they also got him to mentor Sheffield- which worked as he had his best year as a Brewer in '90. When they dealt Parker for Bichette the next year in spring training, Sheffield pouted, and it was basically the final nail in the coffin as far as his career in Milwaukee was concerned. That was a really disappointing era for the Brewers in general. They had two HOF close to their primes and Sheffield and Vaughn came up one after another. As has been a common theme throughout the history of the franchise, they just didn't have enough pitching to get the job done.
  18. As a follow up to this statement I made in my post yesterday regarding the ACC: When is the last time they haven't had a #1? I used this on my friend today, and he said 'last year'. Poor argument on my part.
  19. I don't see the Badgers getting a #1 without a bunch of help. Three are pretty much locked in with Florida, WSU and Arizona. For the fourth my money would be on whoever comes out of the ACC tourney Syracuse/Virginia/Duke. Even though the ACC seems down quite a bit this year, there is still a good deal of bias for that conference. When is the last time they haven't had a #1? I also wouldn't write either Kansas or Louisville off if they were able to win their conference tourney. For the Badgers to get a one, I think they are going to need a dark horse to win the ACC for sure.
  20. I like Smart's game, but I'm thinking he's going to have some difficulty transitioning to the NBA. His skills are more suited toward being a 2 guard, but his size is suited for the 1. He's likely to be a combo guard, in my view will probably will turn out closer to a Brandon Knight as opposed to a Dwayne Wade.
  21. If the Bucks draft a big who's had stress fractures in his spine at age 19, the league should step in and take over the team. That would be the height of stupidity.
  22. Fairly OT, but I was reading this article today. Least likely hairdresser ever. Like a lot of guys, he had a bad bleach job in the mid 90's, but still: http://host.madison.com/sports/high-school/basketball/boys/hometown-history-from-small-town-roots-cassville-s-sam-okey/article_c579170c-e041-5b34-ade7-2eae2671f794.html
  23. I don't think that it makes any sense to trade Weeks for another bad contract at this point. I could see the reasoning behind trading him to dump most/all the salary, but not to assume someone like League. Right now, I'm 100% on board with giving Weeks the job for the first month or two at least. I sure hope they don't cave to public pressure and take on a bad player and/or eat a bunch of salary. It's not like you would be blocking a big time prospect- you'd think that Scooter was a young Paul Molitor or something based on some of the posts that I've read on jsonline.
  24. One remarkable thing about Robin was his comeback after tearing up his shoulder in the mid 80's. Apparently, it was a very severe injury which was career threatening, especially back in those days. Personally, I have a great appreciation for him because he left several big money offers on the table to re-sign with the Brewers after '89. I was lucky enough to witness his 3,000th hit (went to all three games), and it's something I will never forget.
  25. To me the nightmare scenario would be the Brewers trading Weeks and eating salary, then watching him go somewhere else and having a decent year while Scooter plays below expectations or gets hurt. I'm not risking that scenario for Phelps.
