  1. I think that 1B is fine, and 2nd is passable. I think if a move is made, it will be for an outfielder with some power. If Davis continues to play at this pace, that just isn't going to get the job done. There should be a few decent options out there in July when it comes to rental players.
  2. Believe it or not, the Cubs actually remind me a lot of the Brewers from 2002 to 2006. The Brewers major league roster sucked, but the farm system was loaded with hitters. The Cubs are the same way now. They stink but their farm is loaded with good hitting prospects. The only difference is that at least the Brewers had Gallardo in system. I don't think the Cubs have any pitching prospects that project to be as good as Gallardo. If I was Theo I would trade Samardzija and a few other veterans for pitching prospects. The Cubs have fat wallets too. Use up the money on buying a rotation and a pen. Point taken that the Cubs have fat wallets, but I'm not sure that I'd want Theo spending big money on free agents. His track record there is atrocious.
  3. It's not like he was taking over the '01 Brewers or something. He actually inherited a pretty good group of pitchers (Garza, Samardzja, Dempster, Zambrano, Cashner, etc.). I'll give him a pass on Zambrano, but he basically turned Garza, Dempster and Cashner into Rizzo, Olt, Grimm and a few other pieces. He also give Edwin Jackson $50 million bucks, Starlin Castro $60 million, and a guy who hasn't cracked the low minors $30 million. The only move that seems like is win is getting Wood from the Reds. They've been losing at 100 game clip from the getgo, so I'm not really seeing any progress. He had better hope that most of the hitting prospects come through, because their pitching looks barren.
  4. How many more years can Theo milk the Red Sox WS runs? I'm not seeing any improvements, and pretty much every move that he's made with guys currently in the bigs has been underwhelming. He's already on his second manager, but I suppose the 'barren farm system' excuse will buy him at least a few more years.
  5. A trip to Detroit without a visit to a Coney Island is not complete. Coney Island is kind of the George Webb's of Detroit, but with chili dogs. There are competing chains, not sure which one is more highly regarded, but I have heard there is one in the ballpark.
  6. I'd be shocked if the new arena isn't directly north of the current BC. If it happens, there is no way that it won't be downtown, and also no way that the BC is left standing. No need to keep a white elephant around with big time maintenance costs.
  7. One thing that makes me nervous about this is something that I haven't heard discussed. I'm assuming that these two guys are going into this as equal partners or thereabouts. In recent sports history, I can't think of many of these type arrangements (White Sox/Timberwolves). I'm assuming that the two had to partner to come up with the necessary bid, but what happens if they start butting heads in a few years, one goes through a divorce/indictment, etc?
  8. They are eventually going to have to move Segura to second.
  9. I'm well aware of exactly what Estrada is, he's basically a less healthy Marcum. Good post Crew, but is this possible? The only Brewers that I know of less healthy than Marcum would be Higuera and Vuckovich and they are long retired. Personally, I think if Estrada has a good year, maybe you can flip him in the off season to create a spot for Thornburg. Heck, maybe the Jays would give us Lawrie back for him the way he's been playing.
  10. I think that the best way to use Wang is in situations where he will be able to throw multiple innings. Everything is working so well at this point, I don't see much benefit in shoehorning him into a situation where he may only face a batter or two and then not pitch again for a week. Right now, Duke is taking his spot.
  11. BJ Upton is the worst player in the majors. He makes Rickie look like Rogers Hornsby by comparison. The Braves owe this guy over $50 million.... wow.
  12. There hasn't been a spot to use him in to this point, and that's a good thing. He's going to get plenty of opportunities.
  13. Exactly, so far so good.
  14. I didn't see a foul there. Even if there was some contact, it would have to be pretty egregious to be called in that spot. I really thought that shot was going in- just kicked off the right side of the rim.
  15. This is what I'm hoping. Kohl takes a chunk of the sales proceeds and fronts the arena. He bought the team for roughly $20 million back in the 80's, so even if he's taken a slight loss over the years, he should be able to donate a huge chunk and still get a decent ROI.
  16. ...and I just watched Davis hit a walk off pinch hit grand slam. My posting reverse mojo strikes again.
  17. The bottom line to me is that the Brewers need to stop whiffing on their first round picks. Since Braun, really the only one to achieve anything at the MLB level has been Lawrie, and the jury is still out on him. Yes, they've been picking mid-late first round mostly since then, but still.
  18. If the Brewers want Ike Davis, they will probably be able to pick him up on the cheap after he's non-tendered in the off season. He's lost the first base job to Duda, who promptly went out and hit two bombs last night.
  19. Larry Sanders is an idiot, the poster child of a guy who played for the money and now no longer cares. The pot use itself doesn't even really bother me, it's his attitude after being suspended that does. The apology came secondary to his NORML talking points. At this point, I say that you cut and run. Take whatever you can get for him, which will be next to nothing. He's not the type of 'team leader' that I want around the young guys as he's more concerned with clubbing and getting high than winning.
  20. Agreed. I think that if the Badgers are going to win, it's going to have to be an ugly game. They are going to need to control the pace and not get destroyed on the glass.
  21. Seems like a very smart play to me, especially off a RH pitcher. All you have to do is get it about 30 feet down the line (or just in that general direction) and it's pretty much a guaranteed hit- unless you are seriously slow afoot. Obviously not the case, but a MLB level hitter should be able to do this in their sleep. Especially a for a lefty, as it is generally easier to push bunt to the opposite field.
  22. I think some skepticism of the MU hire is warranted. The Coach K 'coaching tree' has not really been very fruitful over the years. Quinn Snyder had a short run at Missouri a few years back, but he's long gone. Full disclosure, I'm a 'Duke hater' who believes that much of their success has more to do with their ability to pick and choose from the McDonald's AA teams than it has to coaching.
  23. At some point in the next decade or two, I've got to think that the cable/satellite bubble is going to burst. Streaming services are already a serious threat on the home consumer level. I've got to think that they are going to make a serious dent, and more so with people who do not care about or watch sports. It's apparent that one strategy is to move all the 'big events' to cable to keep customers... that and blackout rules are really the only cards that big sports is holding at this point.
  24. A stupid deal at stupid money. The bottom line is that this hurts all the teams in baseball with limited budgets because it sets the bar that much higher. Contract dollars are not going to regress moving forward. In the end, this is going to squeeze fans even more with ticket prices and the like. With this kind of money being thrown around, how much longer is a station like Fox Sports Wisconsin going to be available on most basic cable/satellite packages without a major rate hike? I'm guessing that the beancounters with MLB envision moving to an internet based pay service for games in the future similar to mlb.tv.
  25. I'm thinking that the Sixers win last night may have clinched the most 'combinations' in the lottery for the Bucks. I can't see them winning more than 1 game the rest of the way, 2 would be a pretty big stretch. If they lose to Detroit tomorrow, that should close the deal- and considering the Bucks have won ONE road game (against the Sixers, of course) during calendar 2014, I do not like their chances. Even if they are able to win 2 games and the Sixers lose out, it goes to a coin flip, correct? No matter what, this was an absolutely deplorable product that was put on the court this season. Since I'm also of the belief that this was not an intentional tank job by Hammonds (especially initially), I think that this season should cost Hammonds, Drew and company their jobs. Start fresh with the high pick.
