  1. How did Nieves, Boggs and Kotsay all get major league deals is the better question.
  2. The Brewers bent over backwards for this guy back in the day. I remember them doing things like paying for his family to come to Milwaukee for an extended vacation and then signing Dave Parker and also bringing in Don Baylor as hitting coach to mentor him. Bottom line, he was an immature brat who believed that he was entitled to the starting shortstop position from day one, and he seems to have never really grown up. Sheffield may be a jerk and he was linked to PED's, but strictly as a player, i think he deserves consideration for the Hall in my opinion. Linked to PED's? I thought that he admitted to using 'the clear' or something like that.
  3. I don't use this acronym much, but Sheffield in the Hall of Fame? LOL!
  4. Too bad Nelson couldn't hit either. He made Joey Meyer look like Babe Ruth. I remember him hitting a ball to the warning track once- I think that was the highlight of his career.
  5. I beg to differ. Going back to the '82 World Series, most of the Cardinal fans that I've personally encountered in Milwaukee during Cardinal/Brewers games have been at about the same level of obnoxiousness as Cubs fans, just fewer in number. Probably due in large part to my disdain for Pujols and the manlove that he gets, I've actually come to despise the Cardinals more than the Cubs.
  6. Where could the team better invest $9 or $10 million per? That wouldn't even get you a middling starter in this market. Heck, guys like Derrek Lee were getting nearly that this off-season. Did you look at the list of potential free agent second basemen next year? Unless you were counting on Farris, who is probably closer to being the 2nd base version of Chad Green as opposed to a 'rising star'.
  7. Very good news. Can't wait to read all the derisive comments on the JSBlog bemoaning this because Weeks is 'injury prone'..... the Packers bandwagoners don't seem to understand that this is not football.
  8. I'm too lazy to look, but how many Cubs vs. Cardinals games are there? It seems that the Saturday game in each Cubs/Cards series last summer was on.
  9. Calling Albert a jerk is blasphemy, almost as much so as calling him an HGH user or stating that he's older than he claims. Not only is he the patron saint of baseball, he's possibly the best hitter ever......even better than Babe Ruth and Ted Williams....hey, the stats don't lie. Seriously, it would be hilarious to watch him leave St. Louis with most of the lower Mississippi delta jump off his jock.
  10. Breakout: Just a gut feeling, but something tells me that Saito will be closing by the end of the year, a la Torres in 2008. Disappointment: Gallardo pitched pretty poorly the second half of last season. I have a feeling that carries over a bit this year.
  11. Olney needs to stop the madness- like anyone would give up any meaningful prospect for Young. Young is a slight upgrade over Betancourt at this point, but frankly I don't think he would be much better defensively, if at all. He is not worth more than a third of what he is making, and the Brewers are almost free of bad contracts.... in conclusion, Young makes absolutely no sense.
  12. Point taken. His words weren't very strong, but I have more of a problem with his actions. That said, the comments about 'frustrations' and Milwaukee 'not being a fit', don't seem to make much sense because I've seen no evidence that the organization hasn't supported him 100%. From what I've read, this kid needs an attitude adjustment, and he's got to be ready to bust his butt to live up to his prospect status. I'll cut him some slack because of his age, but I'm glad he was able to be flipped for Marcum.
  13. To be honest, I don't know why the Brewers don't throw him a million or so. Do they have to do it? No- but it would be a nice gesture to a guy who played very well the past two seasons, and has cost little to nothing. A goodwill gesture like this may go a long way to motivate him for the coming season, and more importantly once he hits arbitration. Obviously, it's not my money though, but is an extra half million really going to make or break the payroll?
  14. "It’s good for me to get into a new organization and it’s kind of like a fresh start for me. I don’t think Milwaukee was the best fit for me. I wish them luck going forward but I’m happy to be here." Yeah, totally disrespectful That's the only thing I could see from that article that could be (mis-)construed as him 'disrespecting' the Brewers. The Brewers have guys at corner infield & outfield that will be around for several more seasons, so Lawrie's right that a different organization without as many guys blocking him is a better fit. Sorry, but he comes off to me as a complete tool. First he whines about catching, then he whines about playing 2nd- too lazy to show up in the fall to work on his game- I guess that he was too busy posing for his shirtless facebook pictures. What has he done to earn the stature to be able to dictate when and where he plays? Not much, if you look at his stats- and the '2nd youngest player in his league' or whatever excuse is going to be rendered moot in a year or two. Prince tore up the Midwest League when he was 19, Lawrie was slightly above average- I guess all the 'national team' experience didn't help much. I'll bet dollars to donuts that he ends up in a corner outfield position at some point, and if that's the case he had better develop a power stroke, the 1 HR/54 PA ratio he's had thus far in the minors isn't going to get the job done.
  15. I'd say no. That was the mindset of the mid to late 90's though. 'Something' generally resulted in gems like Marc Newfield and Jamey Wright.
  16. I hope Lawrie busts. He has no reason whatsoever to disrespect the Brewers organization. Imagine giving a kid well over a million dollars and then expecting him to follow direction as to how to play baseball. He's an arrogant jerk, and I'll be rooting against him.
  17. No excuse not to get this done. Either overpay slightly for Weeks now, or hold on to the pipe dream of overpaying ridiculously for someone like Reyes in the off season.
  18. The top picture of Miller Park was one of the first released by the team- if not the first- as evidenced by the lack of a roof. It was a knockoff of Ebbets Field, but very cool.
  19. Because the Brewers were always the poster boy for this kind of talk 15-20 years ago, I hate to speculate on other teams. These things go in cycles... it seems that the A's relocation rumors have been around since I was a kid- the White Sox, Twins, Indians and Giants were often rumored to be on the move as well (the A's probably still are the most likely team to move in my opinion). Despite all this talk, in my lifetime, only two franchises have moved- one out of Washington (Texas), and one back in. It's kind of weird that Montreal was the only city to lose a team, because back in the day, they had an extremely rabid fan base. I don't want to go all LeBron James, but I will say that baseball should probably not expanded after '77. 26 teams was more than enough. As hard as it was to relocate the Expos, I don't see any viable options at this point in time. Perhaps the Charlotte area, but that would be it. I'm not sure whether Portland would be viable or not.... they have a long minor league tradition, and a history of fervently supporting the Blazers, but I'm not sure how Seattle would take to putting a team there.
  20. I really think this is going to happen, I don't know why- let's say a premonition on my part. In about 9 months or so, everyone can call me Nostradamus. In the year 2011 and eleven months, the Ball God will forge East to the New City....the arch will shake to its core, and the city of class will begin a long era of fear and pestilence...
  21. If Pettitte makes the HOF, they lose all credibility as far as I'm concerned. Though in my opinion, it's an automatic DQ, let's forget about the steroid thing for a moment.... The guy didn't win 250 games, never won a Cy Young, and had a career WHIP over 1.3. Going further, you could probably take 25-50 wins off his career total had he not pitched most of his career with the Yankees. Yes, due to the diluted playoff system, he had a lot of playoff wins- he won a little less than half of his playoff starts. His World Series ERA was over 4 as well.
  22. My memory could be off, but I remember that MLB was extremely eager to get a franchise into the Phoenix area for a long time. I think they were willing to bend over backwards to accommodate them.I can't remember, but I wouldn't be shocked at all if the Selig-Prieb regime received some kind of a 'fee' for switching leagues.
  23. What I've never been able to understand is the fact that an expansion team was able to dictate what league they were to go into. I guess that money talks.
  24. I disagree. I'd love to see one of the division rivals pick this contract up. He's basically Mark Loretta with 20 home run type power potential- not a bad thing- but he makes about $15 million a season. If the Rangers are able to trade him without eating a huge chunk of salary and/or taking a bad contract in return, it would be a miracle. This contract has to be one of the 5 or 10 worst in baseball right now. As for the Brewers getting him to replace Fielder at first base, I'd rather have Gamel any day- even at the same salary. Young is already nearing 35 years old.
  25. I have no interest in Young whatsoever, unless the Rangers pay about 90% of his salary. Frankly, I don't think that he'd be much of an upgrade over Betancourt. He's basically the Jeff Suppan of hitters right now (right up there with Vernon Wells). He's poor defensively, and I wonder how much his offensive numbers have been helped by playing home games in Arlington. He's never really hit with much power either. Plus he's old.
