  1. Looking at the Pirates rotation, it really doesn't look that good to me. Cole is the best of the bunch, but without Burnett, I think they are taking a step back, unless you believe that Liriano, Locke (1st half at least), and Morton can come close to replicating what they did last year. I'm skeptical.
  2. I think there should absolutely be a statue of Warren Spahn outside Miller Park. Arguably a top 5 pitcher all time who logged the majority of his innings right there. His delivery would make for a great statue.
  3. Well, this is an interesting turn of events. It wouldn't be a surprise to me if an agent or someone else close to the player leaked the deal in a last ditch attempt to get a better offer. If they are playing dirty pool here, I hope the Brewers just walk away.
  4. Green looks to be one of the odd men out for sure. He is going to need to have a big spring. Even then, he might need an injury or two to make the team... That said, the way things went last year, he'll probably be the opening day 1B.
  5. I don't have a problem with the Brewers giving him a look. At least he's a left handed bat, a decent option to PH or burn a LH reliever in the late innings.
  6. I disagree. If you started judging HOF on 'character', a heavy majority of inductees would fail under scrutiny. As for Molitor, he has had some personal problems, but I never have read about any arrests, etc. He played the game the right way, and has always conducted himself publicly with class and treated fans with respect. Unlike the steroid cheats, he has owned his problems, and has been answering to them for 30 years. I have a lot more respect for him as a person and as a player than I do for Braun, A-Rod, or any of the other cheats who try/have tried to play me as a fool.
  7. I'm almost positive that is the case. Also, if you are a high lottery pick, you are almost guaranteed to go to a bad situation. Even if someone wanted to avoid Milwaukee, the odds are high that they'll be in the mix again next year. The bottom line is that money rules all for these guys, and it spends the same no matter where it comes from.
  8. Maybe I'm jaded, but I'd be absolutely shocked if anyone projected as number one overall returned to school.
  9. Kind of veering this a tad OT, but I was happy to hear Molitor's comments today about A-Rod. He must have hit a nerve, because he brought the steroid apologists out in full force. They basically called Molitor a cokehead hypocrite and yet again compared the widespread use of diet pills by players in the 60's and 70's to cycling human growth hormone.
  10. I like it. The guy has averaged almost 30 HR a year in the bigs. Francisco has never hit 30 HR even in the minors. This looks to be a low risk/decent reward move.
  11. I think that instead of reducing the threshold to get election to this thing, they need to reduce the amount of voters. I'd really like to see a list of the 40 people who are casting ballots here. I'm 100% certain that we could take any random cross section of members here and it would be more knowledgeable. I could rip the results apart as I've probably done here the past several years, but I wouldn't even know where to start.
  12. I certainly don't want to see any questionable big money free agent signings, but I'd like to see some moves for depth. It doesn't always take big money to fill some holes. Every year it seems that there is at least one area of the team where a guy or two gets hurt or under performs and things turn into a complete shambles. There are depth guys out there who aren't too spendy. You don't have to limit yourselves to FA either, as the Braves just got Ryan Doumit for a mid-level prospect. A guy like that would have been perfect for the Brewers. I'll reserve judgement because it's too early yet to criticize, but I hope that they are doing their due diligence. Hearing excuses about injuries gets old year after year, everybody has them.
  13. I thought about Surhoff for this, in some ways he might be the best comparison to Weeks... high draft pick, very little time in the minors, etc. He put up pretty pedestrian numbers for the Brewers (except for that last season), but for whatever reason, I never had huge expectations for him after '87. He was what he was, I guess. This brought to mind another one a bit before my time. From what I've been told, Darrell Porter was supposed to be the next Johnny Bench. His career with the Brewers was pretty subpar, and marred by alcohol and drug abuse.
  14. You tell me what moves should have been made to quench your thirst on offseason activity? I'm not really being critical here, I was more wondering what other people think. To me, the only thing that I'm frustrated about (and this has been going on for years) is Melvin's seeming hatred of left handed bats. I'm obviously also worried about the 1B situation, and I think they need a few arms for the bullpen as well.
  15. This is something that I've been thinking about, and haven't seen a dedicated thread- so here goes. Has there ever been a slower off-season in Brewer history than this one? In the past 3 months there have been what, 3 or 4 minor transactions (none of which really registered a blip on the radar)? I'm not looking for a big blockbuster deal, or marquee FA, but maybe a signing a few vets to NRI deals with invites to spring training or something. Even in the darkest days of the Bando/Taylor regimes moves were made. I guess that I'm not sure how to feel about this. Part of me wants to get upset that they've made no moves to improve the team, but then part of me is glad when I consider some of the moves from the past several off seasons. That said, I have to think that it's indicative of severe payroll limitations as they can't be 100 percent content with the roster as it stands right now. Just wondering about other people's thoughts on this.
  16. Mattingly is a tough one for me. He was the absolute best player in the game for a five year stretch. If he doesn't have those back problems, I'm guessing there wouldn't even be a debate.
  17. To me, the way the whole Sheffield thing went down is number one and it's not even close. I'd probably put Braggs at number two. Nieves/Neugebauer would be on the list as well, through factors mostly out of their control. Weeks has been kind of like Braggs with better numbers and a bad long term deal to me. Both possessed seemingly endless potential/physical skills, but an inability to get things to 'click'. Incredibly frustrating, but for Rickie you have to consider the injuries as well. In both of the seasons where it looked like he really had gotten it together, he suffered season ending injuries. From what I remember, Braggs also had a season where he really got off to a good start (88?) and then hurt his shoulder.
  18. The Bucks put on an absolute pathetic display of basketball tonight. This has to be rock bottom. The bottom line is that in the draft, the Bucks need a scorer. Hoping they get lucky and can take Parker.
  19. I guess that I don't get all the uproar about this. First of all, any time you get a large group of 500 some people together, you are bound to get some idiots. From my experience, on average, sports writers seem more sanctimonious and come off as know it all's more than the average person, so it shouldn't be a surprise that some decide that their vote will be some type of statement. As for LeBetard, I'm glad they stripped him of his voting privileges. I have no doubt that this was a publicity stunt on his part... I'm not a fan of his at all, he likes to interject himself into things..definitely an attention (I'll be nice and say) seeker. Bottom line, the voting system has always been a bit flawed for better or worse- if nothing else, it sparks fun debates such as this one. As for the 100% thing, it's gotten to be a self fulfilling prophecy. I'd be willing to bet that no one will ever attain it for the simple reason that "(insert any baseball immortal) didn't even get 100%". For what it's worth, I think the writers did OK with this vote. In my view, cheaters like Bonds and Clemens have no business in the Hall, and I believe that if you took a vote with baseball fans, the split would be very similar to how the writers voted.
  20. When Frankie Frisch headed up the vet's committee in the 60's and 70's, he got a bunch of cronies in with borderline credentials.
  21. I suppose that this move by the Suppan camp was necessary to quell the GM's constantly inquiring whether or not he was open to entertaining offers to anchor a starting rotation next year... Soup just crushed a lot of dreams.
  22. 1. A world championship, obviously 2. Braun shows no dropoff after the scandal 3. No eight figure deals to anyone left on a picked over free agent market 4. A first round pick who is BPA, and not drafted based on any of 'upside', organizational need and/or signability. 5. I guess that I'll go with Weeks remembering how to hit MLB pitching.
  23. I'd gamble two million, but what's going to stop a big market team from throwing 3-4 times that amount at him. The Astros have a ton of cash to spend, so that's my pick. Also it appears that he's the opposite of Hart in that he lives/wants to train in Florida.
  24. I highly doubt that the Brewers would be in on this. 35 years old and off two major shoulder surgeries generally isn't a good risk. I'd stay away, unless he was willing to go really cheap. Considering all the teams mentioned here, that's not happening.
  25. Very sad news, especially today. Mike was the first Brewers TV commentator that I remember, back in the days where a Brewer game on the tube was a treat.
