  1. I was knocking back a couple of brews with my Brewer savant friend tonight, and this discussion came up. He quickly pointed out that I was wrong, and that the Brewers have in fact drafted one twenty game winner. In the realm of Brewer trivia, this would be a great & difficult question... any guesses for bragging rights?
  2. I don't want replay. Games take long enough as it is, and I don't feel like waiting two minutes for them to decide to review a play, then a few more to conduct the review. Like others have said, I can't stand how seemingly every turnover and all the touchdowns in the NFL are reviewed. It's made the officiating tentative, and worse than it's ever been. Over time, bad calls should even out anyway. I would be in favor of some type of umpire rating system to weed the bad ones out though.
  3. Thanks for the link. I could waste a ton of time on here. I looked up Gorman Thomas and found an interesting scouting report on the Sundown Kid Danny Thomas from John Felske, who I believe was a Brewer minor league manager at the time... very succinct: "Let's all hope he QUITS!"
  4. Yuni with another bomb tonight and a great bailout scoop at first. You know he's playing good when people have to resort to bashing his linguistics...
  5. I've ranted on this before here, so I'll keep it brief... but in a nutshell, the Brewers have never been able to develop pitching. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong... but as far as I can tell, this franchise has never drafted a single 20 game winner. I know they've had some bad luck with injuries, etc., and that wins are somewhat overrated, but that is a pathetic stat.
  6. Never say never. The Rivers situation is fairly similar to the Mike Dunleavy deal when they 'poached' him from the Lakers after Magic retired. All that said, I've got to think that the job is Sampson's if he wants it. I just don't see Van Gundy as a good fit for either party.
  7. Sounds like a great neighbor.... This makes my blood boil, and outside of an occasional cigar, I don't even smoke. Have you asked this neighbor if it's OK to have a cookout if their windows are open, and if charcoal smoke is more palatable for them? Good grief, this is not a health issue, it's a power trip. I'd tell them in no uncertain terms that if they don't like the faint aroma of smoke, they should close their windows and mind their own business. As for your landlord, I don't see what they can do as long as your lease doesn't explicitly prohibit smoking outside. Please don't kowtow to their wishes and walk up and down the street to smoke....don't let them win. I'd actually suggest that you and your roommates/friends have a smoking party outside the next nice day that their windows are open.
  8. Sad news, especially at that young age. I remember hearing about 'The Animal' quite a bit back in the day, tough to believe that he only pitched in 5 games for the Brewers.
  9. Turn on any sports broadcast/news outlet these days and chances are good that you'll see a fetching gal or two. Gone are the days of sports broadcasts dominated by middle-aged men in sweaters and blazers. In this particular instance... personally I'd rather watch these ladies promote upcoming broadcasts than Augie and Jim Pashcke, but that's just me... As for Sophia, she struggles here and there, and her heavy Sconniette accent is a bit grating at times... but since she's pretty new, I'm willing to give her a chance.
  10. Since PFx1 hasn't even bothered to address this, I think you can assume that answer is "no" The best example of this I can think of was when they did something similar with Pat Listach.... which would also be a great example of why you should proceed with caution in such a scenario.
  11. Fair analogy. Both of them cheated and should get the same punishment and be thought of the same way. It is also fair to assume that the guy who just looked over someone's shoulder probably would have bought the answer key if it were available to him and not that expensive, most likely nobody offered him the answer sheet. Point taken. Both cheaters, but who gains the greater reward? If you juice theoretically you would have an advantage every minute that you were on the field. If you are throwing a spitter, how many times a game can you get an edge? You may have the best 'spurve' in the world, but if you throw it every pitch, you are getting busted. At any rate, though I completely disagree with the premise, hats off to clancyphile for picking a topic that will stir a spirited debate.
  12. I don't really care one way or the other about this topic, but this reasoning lacks any basis in logic. How so? By throwing a spitter you are blatantly breaking the rules in front of four sets of eyes and an opposing team that all should be looking to stop you from doing so. By juicing you are gaining an advantage, but taking very little risk as long as you lie. A good analogy to me would be taking an exam... the spitter thrower would be looking over someone's shoulder a few feet from the instructor, while the juicer bought an answer key for the test last week.
  13. Why do steroid apologists hate Gaylord Perry so much? I'm not a huge fan of his act myself... he peaked during a dead ball era of baseball and had to pitch until he was like 60 to get HOF stats. That said, any cheating that he did was right under the nose of the umpires, whose job was to stop him from doing it. To be a juicer, you pretty much have to be a cheater AND a liar... at least Perry was honest about it.
  14. As a pure baseball movie, I have to go with Eight Men Out. It's maybe not the most entertaining of the baseball movies, but a good drama that's for the most part pretty true to the actual events.
  15. I wouldn't want to watch Weeks hitting 8th... he'd never take the bat off his shoulder. I cringe at the thought of him taking walks (or called strike threes) with two outs, and runners on 2nd and 3rd with the pitcher in the on deck circle. I like Rickie, but in my view, he is the most consistently frustrating player the Brewers have had since Glenn Braggs. He has so much ability and has shown some big time flashes of converting that ability into production... but something just isn't clicking for him to take it to the next level.
  16. So far, so good on Lohse. I don't expect him to continue pitching as well as he has in the first three starts (only one BB so far!), but I will say that he looks less hittable than either Suppan or Wolf.
  17. Not for nothing, but Yuni's mohawk rules.
  18. I think that the only one of these that you can truly second guess is Rogers over Weaver, but the only reason that Weaver was even available when the Brewers picked was that he was a Boras client asking for crazy money. I'm convinced that after the Brewers couldn't sign a few draft picks (Alex Fernandez, Kenny Henderson, etc.), they started to choose guys based in large part on signability as opposed to strictly talent once bonuses started skyrocketing in the late 80's early 90's. This seemed to carry over at least until the end of the Selig era.
  19. For whatever reason, with two exceptions, the Brewers haven't been able to develop any pitching for the past twenty plus years. I may be forgetting someone, but it would be interesting to see what pitcher outside of Sheets and Gallardo has the most wins of a Brewer draftee from the past 20 drafts. Without knowing how to look this up, I'd guess D'Amico. It's hard to think of anyone else, and that's pathetic for a generation worth of drafting. At some point, you have to get past the injury excuses, etc. and take a long look at how this organization evaluates, drafts and develops pitching. I also think that Seid needs to be squarely on the hot seat. It's really too soon to make a fair evaluation of what he has done, but it's not looking very good. Every bad draft is going to set this organization back.
  20. One of my favorite Onion pieces... http://www.theonion.com/articles/you-will-suffer-humiliation-when-the-sports-team-f,10804/
  21. K Rod has a great track record, pre-2012. Combine his performance last season with the seeming lack of interest in him on the open market, and you have a situation where he is either going to have to retire or come back on a make good basis. I don't see where he can be choosy for either a specific role or for a certain amount of money at this point. Obviously, $2 million is chump change for a free agent reliever these days, but I suspect that had someone been willing to give him that kind of money, he would have taken it.
  22. He's a proven reliever who had a down year last year, but not a T-Bow year or anything. I hardly think 2 million dollar for a pitcher with his track record is that crazy. The longer it goes of course the less likely that 2 million is, but unless we're again talking about his personal life, than I'm completely lost how 2 million is a "dream world," in today's market for a pitcher like K-Rod. Maybe so, but if he was really that valuable I'd have thought that someone would have taken him basically for free at the deadline last season or signed him to a deal in the off-season. My guess is that he is looking for the kind of money they are talking about and there are no takers at that price, if he was willing to take less, he would have gotten a shot in spring training somewhere. Maybe he could go fishing with Derek Lee, Jermaine Dye and Latrell.
  23. Last time the Brewers started like this, we ended up with roughly 150 games of a Jerry Royster managed team. I take a small bit of solace in knowing there is no way things can get worse than that.
