  1. I'm so tired of watching him take a called strike one on the first pitch. It seems like it happens every at bat and it's driving me nuts. I've noticed this with the whole team this season. I wonder if it's the effect of Narron or something. Perhaps Weeks should go up to the plate telling himself that he's going to see the ball and hit it rather than fooling around trying to 'work the count'. I'm getting to the point where I'm agreeing with those that feel he needs to sit down for a couple of games.
  2. Kind of on topic, but your friend looked so familiar to me, and I wondered if I knew him. I couldn't place him, and it was killing me- then I noticed he was in Vegas. He's an expert on Pawn Stars isn't he? Pretty cool.
  3. I fear that those who ragged on Yuni for his hitting are going to see what a really bad offensive SS looks like in Izturis. I don't care that he's better on defense, that is cancelled out due to the fact that he appears to be an automatic out at the plate. Frankly, I'd rather bring Counsell out of retirement than go with Izturis every day out there.
  4. Weeks is not aggressive enough at the plate. Does he ever offer at the first pitch anymore? It seems like he always falls behind in the count, often swinging at bad pitches later in the at bat.
  5. If you don't want a human element, then why even bother having on-field umpires? Put a few guys up in a booth somewhere with some TV monitors and 'Pitch Track' or whatever. This way, we wouldn't have to worry about a call being overturned. Personally, I don't want to watch games in which every close play results in a five minute delay, but that's me. There have been blown calls throughout baseball history, and officiating is probably no worse these days than it has ever been. The problem is that with every single game televised and the internet, every blown call becomes an international incident.
  6. Baltimore isn't going to trade Hardy or Machado. They are like 10 games over .500 at this point, so they aren't going to start dumping productive veterans solely to 'sell high'. For them, finishing .500 would be a major goal accomplished. I actually think that they have a pretty decent team, and they may be able to compete well into the summer if their pitching holds up. If anything, they may look to acquire pieces as opposed to selling them off. Even if Machado were ready (and he's not close), the O's could simply choose to shift Hardy to 3B as Reynolds has 'Future 1B/DH' written all over him.
  7. Scratch this, I was a few days behind. Apparently he cleared waivers over the weekend and is back in AAA.
  8. Absolutely. Tearing down a gifted and paid off arena not even 30 years old as part of a plea for public funds is going to be a PR nightmare. Going further, razing the BC may not even be possible under the terms of the Petitt gift, I'm not sure. Personally, I don't know why the BC isn't gutted and renovated perhaps with an addition to the West or North. You could remove some of the seating capacity to add suites. My guess is that a reduction in seating capacity probably isn't acceptable to the NBA and the infrastructure of the building itself may not lend to such a product.
  9. First and foremost, the Bradley Center takes up much more real estate than the Mecca. I think that the Mecca also serves a niche for smaller events in town (barely holds half of the BC). Also, a ton of money has been put into renovating the Mecca in recent years, and due to its smaller size, it would probably be cheaper to maintain in the long run (it is also probably better built than the BC). I just don't see the point in keeping two arenas with 20K-ish seating capacity downtown. All the premier events would go to the new place, and it makes no sense to me to keep the Bradley Center around for 20 some home games a year of Marquette basketball. I'm not going to lose any sleep over Marquette not getting a fair share of revenue... as I stated above, they are in the catbird seat not having any concern related to spending toward building and maintaining an arena. I'm sure that they make good money on ticket sales, and probably a ton more from the Big East basketball TV deal.
  10. Lee must want too much money. At any rate, he doesn't seem to want to continue playing that bad, so no loss. I wouldn't mind seeing Green getting the bulk of the AB's at first for awhile to see how things go. As I mentioned on another thread, Brad Eldred is available, maybe he could play first against lefties and be the needed RH bat off the bench. In the end though, I'm thinking that Ishikawa will be getting most of the time at first for awhile.
  11. I just don't see how they could/would keep the BC around as a white elephant second banana arena downtown. Obviously, the fact that it was a gift throws a big wrench into things, but the place would get insanely expensive to maintain for little or no reason. The BC would be pushing 30 years by the time everything was said and done anyway.. If they were to build the new arena on an adjoining parcel, the Bucks could play at the BC until it was finished.
  12. JHJ just pulled up lame yesterday as well (not that he'd have been available at any rate). Both he and Yuni are hurt. Looks like a little residual bad mojo from the Brewers rubbed off on them. That said, I wish Melvin would have bit the bullet and given JHJ another year in an effort to keep him.
  13. Just saw that the Tigers DFA'd him. This one makes a lot of sense as a RH bat to pair with whoever sticks at 1B. Not much risk to at least give it a try.
  14. I don't think that I'd bail the Twins out on that Carroll contract. Hopefully in a few months, the Brewers are still in things and can work out a deal with someone that is out of the race.
  15. The cupboard is completely bare. This weekend, I spent some time scouring possibilities with other organizations at AAA and the two best names that I found were Josh Wilson and Kevin Frandsen. It looks like they are stuck with Izturis for at least a few months unless they do some serious thinking outside-the-box.
  16. Hamels will probably get fined and maybe suspended.... should have kept his mouth closed. As an old school guy, I really liked how things went down. Vet pitcher hits 'cocky' rookie in the small of the back, cocky rookie then turns the table on pitcher by stealing home on him. Opposing team then drills pitcher in his first at bat as further retribution. Great baseball. I have to say that I wasn't a big Harper fan when reading about his antics in amateur ball/ minors, but he's growing on me. The kid has some brass, and some skills to back it up.
  17. There is no chance. Marquette is in the fundraising business- they don't do philanthropy. That said, I'd like to look at what Marquette pays to host their games at the Bradley Center. I've got to think that this is a major cash cow for them, playing basketball in a money conference without having to worry about building/maintaining an arena. I think that Marquette could afford to pay much more in a new arena, if they were given a nice chunk of suites, etc. I'm also fairly confident the US Cellular Arena would go away and those event would then be played at the BC. I'm not privy to the details of the Petitt gift, but I have to think that the Bradley Center would have to come down if the new arena is built. It takes up too much real estate and would be very expensive to maintain. I'd think that the MECCA is much better to keep around because it's much smaller and I'd assume cheaper to maintain. I'd guess that any new arena project is going to take up much more space than the Bradley Center does now. My guess is that the arena will be built on adjoining land, and we'll see a parking ramp/entertainment complex on the parcel where the Bradley Center now stands.
  18. I can't imagine how badly it would suck to be a celebrity these days with camera phones, twitter, Facebook, etc.
  19. What kind of production do you guys expect from 1B/SS going forward? I do not expect much, nor do I expect Green to be given the 1B job over Ishikawa. This is why I'd be interested in Lee.
  20. Now that Gonzalez is out, I'm much more in favor of this move. If Lee can come close to his production last year, he should help offset the black hole of offense that SS will most likely become. I'd guess that it would take at least 2-3 weeks for him to be ready to play though.
  21. Yuck. Looks like Melvin's policy on not offering bench players (not named Counsell)more than one year deals has really backfired.
  22. Pujols has been Kevin Barker bad. Based on what he has done in his career, we are getting past the point where you can write this off as a simple slump. On another note, Prince hasn't exactly been tearing up the American League either.
  23. I'd actually be in on Kotsay at this point. I'm more than a little worried about Braun, I wouldn't be surprised if this issue lingered for the next several weeks. Let's just hope that Weeks, Ramirez, Hart and Gonzalez stay healthy or things will get ugly.
  24. I hope everyone else stays healthy. Perhaps it is time for Melvin to start looking around for some help... a veteran guy who can play corner OF/1B.
