  1. I agree that the Brewers do it too, but the impact is far less fiancially for (some) other teams.
  2. Too bad. He's a guy I was hoping DM would target on a short-term, incentive-laden deal. It's so frustrating that teams like Boston et al can take risks like this, and if they don't pan out, it just doesn't really matter. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/ It doesn't mention money details, but I'm guessing 1 year/7 million with a team option plus incentives.
  3. I'm not saying I would trade Hardy+ for Greinke (although it would depend on the "+"). If that extra player is Gamel, then no way. But if it's a player like Brewer or even Salome, who I just don't think will stick at catcher, I would definitely make that deal. Greinke is a valuable guy. My only point in bringing up those names was to show what I believe to be Greinke's value.
  4. I've done quite a bit of work at Melvin's house. Nice guy. He says "and that" even more when he's not at a presser. It's all I can do to not laugh (wouldn't be very professional though)m We also did Bando's house on Beaver Lake. If he wasn't such a nice guy I would've wanted to punch him.
  5. I agree. I knew we were a long shot, but I was hoping he'd sign here. As far as the Giants trading him at the deadline, I have to assume he required a No Trade Clause.
  6. I'll take the over. Braun hits 50 with that lineup. The rumored Greinke/Francouer was fantasy on the part of a writer. It's a ridiculous notion. Greinke costs Escobar and Gamel, or Hardy and Gamel. They have no use for Hart either.
  7. Garrett Anderson has OPS'ed over 786 once since 2003.............and is a horrible OF. Don't see how he would fit in, unless you're thinking as a 4th OF for $1-$2M/year. I could go for that. Dunn is a vastly superior hitter to Anderson, and Abreu to a lesser extent. Abreu makes up for some of the difference with better (but still bad) defense. I'm in favor of Dunn if it's in tandem with a trade of Fielder, but an OF of Braun/Hart/Dunn is pretty scary.
  8. I don't really care. The drop of approximately 50 spots in the draft sucks, obviously, but I don't feel any differently about the Yankees than I did 12 hours ago. If they really think this is the way to build a club, I say let 'em try. It clearly doesn't work. Burnett was an awful signing. CC was OK for 3 years.....giving any pitcher 7 years is idiotic. Tex is a very good player, but not nearly worth what they gave him. Here's hoping they disappoint.
  9. Well, I just read on MLBTR that the Red Sox were considering trading Bowden for Miguel Montero. It's pretty clear that the Brewers wouldn't make out on this deal if that's true. If I'm Melvin I'm on the blower immediately offering Salome.
  10. Not to be too OT, but what is that movie.......it actually looks pretty good. Hilarious, by the way. Edit: figured out that it's "Downfall". I'll buy it tomorrow.
  11. The scary part is that Randy was even better than CC. Granted, the drama was greater with CC, but Johnson's performance was even better.
  12. Yeah, sorry about the thread title. I'd fix it, but I don't know how. Bard is not filler. He has a chance to be a great reliever, and I believe that Delcarmen also can be an extremely effective reliever (particularly in the NL). And they cost a combined 1.2M. I will also admit that I am firmly in the trade-Prince-sooner-than-later camp. His weight terrifies me.
  13. They're also the exact same age, and Bowden is a full level ahead of Hanson. I did just notice that Hanson averaged 16K/9 (!) in the AFL. To each his own I guess.
  14. I agree, and I'm certainly not married to Bowden. I thought (incorrectly as it turns out) that Boston would want Fielder. I like your guys better except Hanson. I'd much rather have Bowden. Texas and Oakland wouldn't seem to be good fits for Fielder. Baltimore for Tillman + would seem to be a good fit. They have him, Arietta and Matusz, so maybe they would part with one of them for Fielder.
  15. I'd say that's a pretty accurate assessment of the 2009 situation. And in 2010 and 2011 we're waaaaay better than we would be if we tried to be competitive in 2009. I just don't see any pitchers out there that are gonna help us be a playoff team next year.
  16. You're right. For some reason I was thinking Anderson was an OF. That definitely puts a crimp in this idea.....my overall point of attempting to acquire young, controllable pitchers is still there though. BTW, I tried to edit the title, but it didn't work.
  17. Hmmmmmm.....interesting. I thought I was being greedy. I think people are going to be disappointed with what we get for Prince when we do trade him. Unless, of course, he hits 50 bombs again in 09.
  18. Reading through the off-season plan thread, I attempted to construct a roster that could compete in 2009 and beyond, and came up woefully short. I don't like the idea of signing FA pitchers at all, so I thought I'd attempt to come up with an alternative: (This deal would hinge on Boston not signing Tex) Prince for Michael Bowden, Daniel Bard and Manny Delcarmen. Now, I'm not sure if this is too much for us (probably), and if it is, I could live without Bard or Delcarmen. Bowden is a must, however. I would also consider adding Salome (they need a C, and he could be a future DH) if it meant getting all three guys. This punts 2009. I understand that. And I'm OK with that. It also allows us to sign our young guys who want to be here (mostly Hardy) to long-term deals. It keeps us out of starting pitching FA at least until that one starter may actually put us over the top. I'd stick Bowden in the rotation immediately, Bard in high-leverage relief situations immediately with an eye on him being the closer in 2010, and delcarmen is a nice arm to keep around for 3 years or more. That's my case. Lemme have it.
  19. Suppan IS a boat-anchor. I don't expect him to be even mediocre at this point, and he is exibhits A through Z as to why this team should never sign a free agent starting pitcher to more than a 2 year deal.
  20. It puzzles me as well. I wouldn't trade Weeks for Cano straight up for the reasons you outlined.
  21. Agree. I was thinking more of Fuentes. Probably wishfully thinking.
  22. Well, if you can trade Cam & Hall, that gets you to about $51M.......sign Fuentes and Dunn for a combined 3/66.........up to 73M.......that's a competetive group......although SP is still weak. I guess I'm trying to make lemonade out of lemons. Now, if DM would consider trading Prince for young pitching, we might be getting somewhere.
  23. The thing that is interesting to me here is that Doug might be rushing to get this deal done to get Cam's money off the books so he can be a FA player. While it's a good idea imo to get into the FA market early rather than late, I hope he doesn't make a bad deal because of a perceived need to rush it.
  24. I would love to get Sanchez.......Whelan would be good too. Marquez is on the White Sox (Swisher deal).
  25. If DM could get Kennedy and Cabrera AND shed Hall's contract, that's a big win in my book. I could live with Corey in CF if we could then sign Dunn. I could also live with Melky in CF if corey were to be traded for young pitching. That deal would allow DM a lot of flexibility payroll-wise as well. I really don't see the downside.
