  1. the Astros take a lot of "good cuts" and show a lot of hustle. they're gamers. they're a nine-man David Eckstein.
  2. i thought i'd read that the two PTBNLs in the K-Rod trade weren't major prospects, which Green would be. though i agree that there must be something Melvin is planning that we don't know. maybe keep him in the minors to maintain his trade value in case he does make one more trade? i think i'd rather call up Green and see if he can make a sudden impact than get rid of what few prospects we have left.
  3. i wouldn't quite classify her among forgettable pop sensations like Britney Spears or Taylor Swift. she had a unique voice and was one of the few singers helping to popularize a very interesting style of jazz-pop music. she wasn't exactly Hendrix, but if a person only ever listened to 1940s music when Hendrix was around, then i'm sure they would have said he was a forgettable flash-in-the-pan, too. I liken Winehouse to a Lauren Hill in their relative impact on the music world, popularity and short tenures.
  4. i was listening tonight and heard him say that, too. i said a few choice words at him and then immediately turned the channel.
  5. he's coming from the AL, and the fact that his ERA is going down as he's starting to see the same teams for about the third time now has me pretty confident that he's going to get better and better as the season wears on.
  6. i'm looking to replace my alarm clock because the AM reception on my very old clock isn't good where i live. i don't want an iPod alarm clock, but i found ($200-ugh) one that plays Internet radio stations. i don't want music, but politics and/or sports. not knowing much about internet radio, are there enough decent stations out there to make it worth my while? i'm assuming Brewers games over the radio (I'm not in Wisconsin) aren't really going to be an option unless I give MLB some money.
  7. with out combined beer experience and varied locations around the country/world, we could combine to make one heck of a ratings guide.
  8. probably no chance anybody can do a screening for just one shirt, right? i'm only looking for simple lettering and no designs or anything like that. my little brother is extremely tall, so i've always thought it would be a fun gift to give him a shirt or two with some height-related sayings on it, like "I hate basketball." also his wedding is coming up soon, so one would be fun for the bachelor party.
  9. you guys are awesome.
  10. i'm upset that my grocery store only temporarily carried Czechvar--it's the import name of the real Budweiser Brewery in the Czech Republic and it's delicious. when the Czech Republic privatized all their businesses after the Soviets left, they specifically kept that brewery as a state-owned business, knowing that St. Louis would buy it out and ruin it. at least they carry Schlitz now (i'm not in Wisconsin). now if only i can talk them into carrying the versions of Leines that aren't gross (basically all their summer seasonals)....
  11. Schlitz, it's nice to meet a fellow gambler. though i'm thinking you're far ahead of me on this (congrats, though). i've decided to go to the quota system starting Friday, as it's worked for me before: dole myself out maybe 6 per day and stick to that. that way i only grab one if i'm really craving it and don't pick one up out of habit. thanks everyone for the support. i probably wouldn't try to stop otherwise, but now that i've gone and given my word on brewerfan i just have to! i'm surprised to hear such positive reviews of hypnotism. there might be a good chance my health care plan covers that, since most offer a lot for anti-smoking efforts. i'll have to make that phone call soon. thanks.
  12. working the night shift is both fun and horrible. 6pm to 6am. i work alone and it's nice to be relaxed and go at my own pace, but it's rough when 4am hits. next week i have the night shift again for three nights, then get one day off, then work three days of 6am-6pm. ugh. we'll see what IT thinks of me being on dating sites, email and brewerfan for half the night. and work uses Explorer, which is a superhighway for viruses--a visit to CBS Sports caused a three-hour crash and a lot of yelling. i also have to drive down a deserted country road at about midnight to do some security checks--no ghosts wandering the road just yet, but give it time.
  13. i understand the pitchers have been playing above their norms this year, but it's hard to think that they'd all suddenly return to form this late in the season. if it was all just random, then i think they'd look more like Cleveland did this year, having a phenominal month or even two, but not playing this well for three whole months already. if i were the Pirates GM, i'd probably make some kind of move before the deadline. not give up the farm, but i remember when it was such a big hurdle after so many bad seasons to just finish up above the .500 mark. obviously i still want the Pirates to finish below the Brewers, but Pirates fans deserve at least that much. but man, the Pirates seemed to really come out of nowhere this year.
  14. ok, two things this time: for a review on that e-cigarette, it's like smoking an ultra-ultra light. the drag is much easier and it's not much of a throat hit, so it doesn't compare completely to the real thing, and sometimes i just want the hardness of a real cigarette. however, it does vaguely curb the cravings. say, if you run out late at night and still really want one, the electronic version can curb it enough to wait until morning. the package came with two e-cigarettes, but one quickly broke, and the one i have can be a pain to remember to recharge all the time, especially since the battery doesn't last a full day. other thing, i still really hate the fact that i smoke. chicks hate it, plus i want to start getting in better shape again, and smoking pretty much negates anything positive i'd gain. i don't have a wife and kids to say "I'll quit for their sake" or anything like that, and personal betterment hasn't been enough. however, i'm a gambler, and winning a bet is good motivation for me. so that said, i was wondering if anyone else out there is also having trouble motivating themselves and would like to make a friendly wager with me: first one to light up again loses the bet. not a small amount that means nothing if you lose, but not a mortgage payment, either. obviously we'd just have to go on the honor system. i'm at about a half-pack per day right now, though sometimes more. i wouldn't mind keeping using the e-cigarette, but we'll see. anyone interested?
  15. i just can't figure out what DM's thinking could be on this one. i believe in giving a struggling guy a chance, but the entire first half isn't a mere "cold streak". i can understand Betancourt because there aren't a lot of alternatives, but not bringing up Green doesn't make sense. even if you bring him up for a month and find out he's not ready yet, then at least you've given it a shot without having to trade for somebody.
  16. mine is a Wells Fargo account. not only won't they let me access the PIN over the phone (was from the same number), but I can't even access my PIN by going into the bank. the only way to do it is to call them and they will mail me the number.
  17. i think i read it somewhere on TradeRumors, but apparently the Brewers were actually on K-Rod's 10-team no-trade list. but the reason the Mets made the deal so quickly is that K-Rod's former agent (not Boras) didn't actually submit K-Rod's list of teams. as soon as he switched agents to Boras, the Mets knew that Boras would fix this and then use the no-trade list as leverage. another article on the site notes that it would hurt K-Rod's FA future if he complained about being in a set-up role.
  18. dunno, the more i think about it, the more i like it. and DM has shown himself to be someone willing to take on a big salary for a single year. plus then this one-year go-for-it experiment continues on into the second year with Ram's bat adequately replacing Fielders'. my biggest concern is being able to extend one or both of Greinke and Marcum, and maybe it would still be possible by getting a guy for just one more year.
  19. no buyout necessary for Betancourt because he's going to be our starting SS next year. i got a feeling.
  20. the first thing that struck me, too, was the taxes i'd have to pay on any of the gifts the team would give me for the ball. i met a guy once who won a ton of money on Wheel of Fortune. that show has advisors there for the winners, who strongly advised him not to accept the trips he'd won because the taxes on those would have been incredible. even $10,000 would end a lot of stress for me for a lot of years, though i'd happily take less money if it meant the ball going to the player or to the HOF instead of some collector who wouldn't let it see the light of day. doesn't Charlie Sheen own the contract that sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees? none of us will ever get to look at that. i wouldn't feel too guilty asking a player who earns Braun's money to chip in a bit to get the ball back. the player has to hire a slightly-cheaper personal chef but i might get to buy living room furniture that wasn't lawn chairs--and i'd get to have a living room!
  21. two hours into my drive to a casino in Louisiana and i remembered i didn't bring any cash for the toll roads. then i remembered i'd need a PIN to withdraw cash to actually play at the casino. i don't have one (or at least don't remember the one that they gave me) and they won't give out that information over the phone. i could have gone the three hours further, got a hotel and gone to a bank in the morning, but i decided it was probably some sort of sign that i shouldn't be playing, so i drove back home. spent $30 on gas, but saved myself from losing about $500 (assuming i'd end up losing it all). that means a profit of $470 if you're bad at math, so now i'll have to decide on how to frivolously spend this extra money tomorrow. probably on booze once it strikes me that i'm waking up in Victoria, Texas.
  22. They basically just step right in front of you like you are not even there...again..."Obliviaaaa" people who walk while staring at their phones and run into you (i like to just stop in place and see if they will)people who quickly back out of a parking space without even bothering to lookpeople who use the fast lane as their own personal lane and won't move over for faster carsoutdoor partiers who yell at 3am in an apartment complexespeople who invite you to a bar or restaurant and then text the whole time you're theregirls (or guys, too) who answer cell phones on a date (or maybe that's a hint)people who leave toenail or fingernail clippings in public placesloud cell-phone talkers in coffee shopscigar smokers in smoking-allowed places ok, thanks. i think i now have my "oblivious" rants out of the way for a while.
  23. eh, every time a closer by committee strategy is tried out, it ends up that one player earns the role and is there full-time by the end of the year. i'm expecting about the same situation. i'm also not ready to assume that K-Rod's vesting option will necessarily kick in with 55 games finished, because it's still very likely that some agreement is in place for him to become a FA regardless. K-Rod could block a trade to 10 teams, so maybe that left Boras with a lot of opportunity to change the contract around. Boras wants him to be a FA and certainly Melvin does, too. we'll need two closers to handle all of our second-half wins, anyway.
  24. Gamel and Thornburg?? I'll miss Thornburg. Boras always wants his players to be bid on in Free Agency, so I'm still thinking that the vesting part of the contract must have been dropped as a condition of the trade. K-Rod also currently has a $3.5M buyout, and I'm thinking that is now a significantly higher figure, which the Brewers will be automatically picking up. not certain i'm ready to conclude that the Brewers got K-Rod for "peanuts" until I know what we gave up. Gamel and a decent prospect?--that seems fair.
  25. if Kruk can back that up with something intelligent to say about it, that would mark the first time he's ever said anything that wasn't cliche or idiotic. he's Joe Morgan v.2.0, and I get the impression he only ever says what his producers tell him to say. for a guy who used to play baseball, he doesn't seem to have any actual depth of knowledge about baseball.
