  1. sure, i leave the bar after the 7th, and NOW they make the comeback. guess i won't complain. and teaches me.
  2. the original Tron spent way too much time in the real world.
  3. i like the Wild Card, but absolutely hate the idea of adding more playoff teams. such a brutally long schedule to determine who the best long-term team is, only to have a crapshoot playoffs. suddenly a team making the playoffs won't be near as exciting as it used to be. Selig is doing everything he possibly can to fix the financial discrepancies in baseball though not actually fixing the problem. now he can have his two or three small-market teams make the playoffs every year and say that there's no problem. baseball has such a long regular season, and its playoffs shouldn't be about what team is hot at the moment. Selig can't seem to figure out that what will make baseball more popular is improving the entire product and not merely having more playoff games. what's doubly-scary about this is that it's of course going to make baseball a lot of money, which means it could very well be a horrible idea that's never going to be repealed. until now i've put up with the joke that is Commissioner Selig, but expanding the playoffs does more harm to the tradition of the game than even steroids have done.
  4. i didn't read that as a complaint against RR or Gomez in the slightest. great quotes from Quade, actually. the only complaint i heard was for an umpire telling a player not to do something, which is definitely legitimate. i'm starting to like Quade. poor guy, having to manage the Cubs.
  5. sleeping in a hammock instead of a bed isn't as comfortable as i was hoping it would be. but i'll be moving in a year or two and don't want to spend big bucks on a mattress that i'll only have for that long. also, the hammock stand is so big that i had to put it diagonally across my bedroom to fit. i've tried inflatable beds before, but they get holes in them too quickly from the friction of turning over at night.
  6. congrats! so odd after all the work you must have done to find a job you end up getting one that way. i got my first professional job after the boss said to me "Eh, you seem pretty normal."
  7. sweet. so happy the game is on WGN today. living in Texas, it's rare i get to watch a game. just made it in time for the Fielder HR, too.
  8. I start my brand new job on Wednesday (12-hour shifts including weekends), move into my brand-new apartment in a totally foreign city on Thursday, and my parents are coming to visit on Friday. i'm already stressed out. at least they'll be getting a motel. i don't even own a single chair for them to sit in. and they're going to want to see where i work, which i'm going to nix.
  9. i start my new job on Wednesday, and am going to start looking for apartments on Saturday. look at one or two places and take it, i figured. it's a crapshoot, anyway, since apartment managers all lie when you ask them about noise and bugs. but now it strikes me that it won't be so fast with credit and background checks. there's some chance i'll need to live in a tent for a few days. oh well. i've certainly done it before.
  10. the season is over. when does football start?
  11. it sounds to me like it's all just a convenient excuse for Edmonds to avoid blaming age and injury for why he can't play anymore. nooooooo, it was the doctor's fault!
  12. i didn't see a previous thread on this in a search. obviously i mean this to be PG and in good fun. i once made it through a lengthy job interview with my fly down. i noticed it most of the way through, but there was little opportunity to fix it. the interviewer didn't let on whether she noticed it or not.
  13. for a lot of years when my grandmother was alive she used to listen to every single Brewers game on the radio, and i wish i taught her how to score a game, because i think it would have brought the game to more life plus kept her mind working a bit more. alas, when the Brewers didn't resign Molitor, she protested and never listened to a single game again.
  14. i'd made it through 80% of the delicious sandwich i made for lunch today before i discovered that i hadn't removed the paper from between my cheese slices.
  15. Pujols is the first person to have ever hit into three double plays on Opening Day. a completely meaningless statistic, but the last person i'd ever expect it to be would be Pujols.
  16. the Park Ranger part sealed it for me. those jobs are so incredibly hard to get, and one or two years there will definitely help to entrench me in the industry. two years of related Ranger experience plus a Master's degree plus industry job growth (likely, anyway) should make me incredibly marketable (i hope). definitely scared of the southern Texas heat, so i figure on keeping a cooler in my work truck full of those cooling neck bands and ice packs. it's two months of temps in the upper 90s with high humidity, which makes this Wisconsin boy nervous whether i can make it through or not. but then it's just for a year or two. plus i can keep myself busy with working out and watching the Brewers win. looks like i'm 30 minutes from the Gulf, so i guess i'll become a beach lover. and any bf.netters who want to come down my way on vacation can know they have a place to crash with me.
  17. sorry to hear that, man. sure wish i could make one of the parties someday. i propose a Fall gathering around Halloween where everyone dresses up as their avatar. i'll bring my 2x4.
  18. Arnett has never done anything BUT his Gob character (not that i'm complaining). i could see Gob fitting in well as the boss on the Office. he's bossy but not intimidating, which would unite the staff against him in the same ways that Michael used to do with his cultural ignorance.
  19. i'd read somewhere that the original Office creator (blanking on his name) had recommended Arnett to take over. plus it looks like Arnett is going to be in quite a few more episodes of 30 Rock, which makes sense if NBC was going to further expose him to a prime-time audience before going to The Office. Michael has become so normal-human the last few seasons. the scene that surprised me the most when he was so absolutely confident that Holly was going to say yes to his proposal. i would have figured him to freak out.
  20. it's too bad you're not going to be there in colder temperatures. the luge/bobsled course they built for the Olympics is available for public use. i don't think i'm exaggerating to say that it's the dream of every single male on earth to try out a luge course at least once in their lives.
  21. thanks, greeg. i found it quite telling that every single person i asked about it said "Park Ranger." i think that if i have any instinct of turning left but everyone else says turn right, then just maybe i should be turning right. despite some instincts to the contrary, i took the Park Ranger job today (pending a physical and such, of course). my father noted that since my thru-hike i've mostly been bouncing around a lot from nothing-job to nothing-job, and going to Asheville would be more of the same. at first i kept saying to myself that Asheville is really a place where i'd like to settle down permanently, but i think you can only base that strong a statement on having a career-type of job to allow you to settle. the zipline job is not exactly that job. it's a college-kid job, except i'm almost 34. for the four months of the off-season there i'd be again hoping to get that REI job for $8/hr. so guess i'm not jumping around at the prospect of being in Victoria, Texas, but i guess logic says it's the best move.
  22. trying to think of the last few videos i saw.... "Frenemies"--the cover has a huge picture of Zach Galifanikis on it, which made me get it. but since it was released before he became a star, it actually has very little of Zach in it. This is one of those movies about two opposites-attract friends (though it's hard to believe they'd be friends) and their well-scripted back-and-forth dialogues. never actually made it through the whole movie, though. MacGruber--ok, i like idiot comedies. generally speaking. groin-punch movies are still too low-brow for me. i'd heard that this was one of those where the jokes were dumb and obvious, but it still worked. those people were very wrong. the jokes were only stupid. the movie was three decent chuckles and nothing too much more. Grown Ups--i'm also a fan of feel-good movies, particularly ones that are on the dumb side and don't involve relationships and "feelings." this was definitely nothing that would leave you saying "wow" or even have you wanting to watch it again, but overall i really enjoyed the movie. it is what it is, and in that respect, it didn't disappoint me at all.
  23. trade all the Brewers players to the Cubs and then win with them.
