  1. http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/12/10/oregon-state-hires-wisconsins-gary-andersen/ Boy that came out of nowhere. Rumor is he was frustrated by admissions policies and the tremendous competition in recruiting.
  2. Well done. And passed the test the first time you took it too. Impressive! Because, you know, I've heard some people have to take it twice.
  3. Based on last year's attendance (which will likely be lower this coming season) they could have dropped ticket prices by $4.66 and come out even. I bet that would've made people a lot happier than having Torii back for a goodbye year.
  4. Darn, I wish I didn't have to work early tomorrow. I don't live very far from the Duke campus, so it would have been fun to show up to a bar wearing red. I'm walking distance from UNC, so probably a lot of other people rooting against Duke. Nobody cares too much for other sports in North Carolina, but for good reason they're mad about basketball. Actually a lot of cool fans around here.
  5. Thanks, LouisEly. I'm confident I'll land something soon enough. Strange it's taken me so long, but I think it's more about the poor choice that Parks&Rec was to study. But opportunities come open here and there and at this point I think I'd like to stick with what I know I'm good at. Being 37 years old has kind of hampered my desire to experiment with careers. Also I'm not good at staring at a computer. Everyone at my current work loves me because I work hard and am good with the customers, so I think that's a good indication that outside work is where I belong. Apparently a new Director has put a hurry on hiring, so I'll probably hear about a Park Ranger job soon (be it good or bad), and I'm very qualified for an interview I have tomorrow.
  6. My parents rent out their house near Phoenix (15 minutes from Maryvale!). They hire one realtor-type person who tells them who is applying to rent and also takes care of the insurance stuff. Then they have to hire someone who shows up to clean it when people leave who also reports damage. I know they've learned their lesson on renting to people from town, because the cleaning lady found 100 lbs of marijuana in the bathtub once.
  7. The study looked at 10 e-cigs and found an anomaly in one of them and made the conclusion based on that one. It was one toxin and it was formaldyhide (sp?). Here's a refutation to that Japanese study: http://www.ecigarette-research.com/web/index.php/2013-04-07-09-50-07/2014/188-frm-jp. Also the atomizer (what creates the vapor) that was tested was badly gunked up and burnt, long past the point when one would have thrown it away. To be fair, here's the original Japanese study: https://www.jstage.jst.go.jp/article/analsci/29/12/29_1219/_pdf I can see how vaping wouldn't work for someone who dips. I have friends who quit using Snus, but I know that's not all that close to the same thing. But all the best with it.
  8. my immediate reaction is to worry what would become of not making it in ND, if it turns out you've quit a decent job to last only a month or two up there because of how insanely demanding the work is. With someone of your intelligence, what about school in petroleum engineering? I looked up a site that said entry-level makes about $90K. For a single guy who keeps eating bologna sandwiches that could mean a lot in the bank.
  9. Though the short-term studies have been overwhelmingly positive, we don't have any long-term research on the effects of inhaling propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin. And the nicotine liquid is absolutely something you can't let little kids get ahold of (liquid nicotine is a topical poison and it's something a toddler might drink). Right now the biggest areas of concern is that many see it as a gateway to cigarettes and the flavors of the e-liquid being enticing to youngsters. A big issue is the industry right now is unregulated--it's easy to get online and although many stores adhere to 18+ only, that mostly is done voluntarily and not because of law. I've read some research that showed e-cigs weren't any more effective as a stop-smoking aid than patches or gum, while others have shown greater results.
  10. What bugs me most about the MLB system is that Selig expands the playoffs to put his finger in the leaky dam and say "see, now small markets have a better chance at the playoffs." But really the great years for the TBs and KCs of the world only come around once every 15 years, with a lot of horrible years in between. But Boston and the rest of the big-spenders have at most two years in mediocrity and just buy their way back. Sure, Milwaukee can compete with some shrewd moves and getting lucky on some draft picks. But one mistake can cost them a few years of being able to compete. Make a mistake as a big-market club and you just pay for a replacement in FA. I get that the Loria's of the world just don't spend (recent signing aside) in order to line their pockets, and that's also bad. But watching some teams buy wins while others have to do it the hard way is really hurting my enjoyment of the game.
  11. Well, it's been a year and I only went back on the cigarette wagon for about a month. Otherwise I've been enjoying my e-cig. Real cigarettes actually taste pretty gross to me now and I really don't crave them. Sure, I'm addicted to the e-cig now but I don't stink of smoke and it's not like I blow it in peoples' faces or anything. And I don't wheeze when I breathe anymore! Really didn't turn out to be all that difficult to make the switch, since one can still satisfy the nicotine cravings with the e-cig. Enjoying one right now. It's "Berry cake batter" flavor. Much better than the "licking a fireplace" flavor of cigarettes.
  12. Had an interview two weeks ago for a Park Ranger job where I think I was one of only three or four to be interviewed. The city surrounding it is pretty ghetto, but the job represents an ability to save a considerable amount per year. Minus that, my future as a law enforcement ranger is probably done. But have another interview in a week. What I thought was a basic park maintenance job is more similar to a Ranger job minus the law enforcement and interpretation (teaching). Much more ideal for me. Definitely crossing my fingers on that one.
  13. I feel like the fraternity parties would be really quiet.
  14. I heard a story on NPR today that a Law Enforcement Officer pulled over a school bus to hand his son his school lunch because he forgot it. The bus driver complained and the officer got fired. The host of the show was saying it was a nice gesture. I work with Officers and told one the story, who said matter-of-factly "Well yeah, of course he got fired."
  15. Me, I wouldn't worry as much about the gaps so that you can squeeze in more work-relevant job duties. May be just me, but I don't think the gaps would shy an employer away from ever interviewing you. When you're qualified for the job, gaps are something more to ask during an interview. I have plenty of gaps in my resume and I don't get asked about the gaps so much as I get asked why I haven't lasted long-term at any of the positions.
  16. I think this is mostly why I won't listen to Jim Rome.
  17. My side of the kitchen was kept very neat, though I haven't made as much of an effort the past month since my roommate is a slob. One of the two sinks always full of dishes, her counter always full of dishes, the oven stacked with dishes. However I am expected to maintain a perfect kitchen and pointing out her mess is "none of my business." She noted her annoyance with me using the oven (not all day, mind you, but for stuff like cooking a frozen pizza). I believe she wants the rent money but not a roommate. It'll be interesting as I'm not on any lease. I will not accept her condition of being perfect while she's a slob and so she'll eventually get mad and may kick me out. Yet she can't afford to turn on the heat in the house (I use a space heater for my room). I think she'll be in for a shock when she can't find another roommate for $300/mo who will accept only two drawers in the kitchen, maintain the kitchen perfectly and just stay in their room without making a peep. edit: the house often reeks of ammonia because she doesn't change the cat littler often. One cat is very overweight while the other is kept in a small cage (space for litterbox and two smallish places for it to sleep) for what must be 18 hours per day. I'll have to take pictures and call the ASPCA when I'm finally kicked out.
  18. I watched the second half last night. The defensive rebounding was just terrible. They'd make an effort for the offensive boards, but defensively it was like they just expected the ball to fall to them as long as they just stood there. Taj Boyd got so many points by just making an effort and getting the put-back. And what was usually Parker's fault, a number of times the Bulls' offensive player could move into the lane and Parker didn't play zone very well and just allowed the pass for an easy shot. The way I saw it, the Bucks did a lot of dumb things and the Bulls are a smart enough team to know how to take advantage of that. But everything is new to the Bucks in about every aspect. I expect things will tighten up as the season goes on. Also happy that Jabari seems more like the player who is still learning instead of the player who is simply outclassed.
  19. I'll look into oil stuff again. Can't do CDL driving because of my back and work as a grunt burns people out very quickly. Nice to get some money in my pocket, sure, but then I'm back to where I am now and a year older. So I am focused on career-type work. But I know oilfields do have gauge-watchers and gate-keepers. Lots of competition for those, but once you land one they pay really well. I lived right by a huge shale/oil operation in Texas and one guy told me outer Mongolia has a booming mining industry with jobs that pay gobs of money. I'm still applying at various parks, and currently seeing if I can slide into the energy industry. And next week I'm hoping to get some appointments with some temp-to-hire agencies. I used to know someone who landed a temp-to-hire data entry job. She absolutely hates the work but is now making $55,000 per year, so she's pretty entrenched.
  20. I've hit the point of frustration with my Park Ranger search. I have a very solid resume yet only three interviews this year. The state wants teachers and I'm sorta everything-but. I'll be able to work on a teaching-related certification, but I'm also not so committed to a $32000/year job that I want to devote yet another year when I'm in my late 30s, just scraping by in order to land it. I'd enjoy working for the Job Service. Resumes and cover letters fit my editing background and I enjoy helping people. But nothing's popped up yet. I've reached the point (and age) where I just desire a career. Grind out 25 more years staring at a computer screen? fine. Hoping to come across a career-type job which'll hire based on my solid education despite a complete lack of direct experience. I've been looking into energy companies today. But I feel quite lost for just where to look and how to go about doing it. But good news is my current $7.75 job loves me and I've just been extended through December, so at least now I've got some extra time to look. My apologies, this was probably more a rant than a question.
  21. maybe this is a stupid question, but if the Bucks stunk and/or traded up in next year's draft (not unreasonable to think) it seems natural they would target someone like Emmanuel Mudiay, who at least right now is the top PG prospect. and extending Sanders also isn't unreasonable. so for all the money the Bucks may have in a year or two, what kind of player would they target in FA? It would seem like the starting roster would be pretty much set if they did draft a PG.
  22. ah, that awkward moment when you meet eyes with the person who just finished up interviewing for the same opening. we talked and she was nice. we both wished each other terrible luck.
  23. another thing that bugs me are coworkers who refuse to work yet will never get fired for it. I work with two high-school kids who probably don't put in 10 minutes of work over an eight hour shift (no exaggeration). they just sit around, go hide, take naps or just wander around. I'm kinda-sorta higher up, but I've reached the point I refuse to speak to them because I'll end up saying something that would get me fired.
  24. When you work in a ticket booth: People who stop their vehicle 20' away from the window so that you need to yell everything to them and then get in and out of the booth every time you need to get/give something to them.
  25. in the last incarnation of this thread, a few people had mentioned that if Milwaukee isn't going to be spending money by drawing free agents, that we should be using that extra money to be alleviating luxury tax penalties for other teams for a profit. It's nice to see this starting to happen. This trade will feel like leaving a $10 bill in the pocket of your winter coat before it gets stored. We'll completely forget that we have the pick and then it'll be a nice bonus when the time comes around.
