  1. i spent 6-7 years in nearby Winston. Raleigh is probably the best place to go for a Northerner (note: in this area of the south, "Yankees" are those from New England, and "Northerner" is just from a northern state). Raleigh has the biggest influx of Yankees, so the culture change won't be near as much to get over. in winter you'll have about three snows (all nothing compared to what you're already used to) and a week of about 20 degrees. summer you'll have two straight weeks of 100. humid, but not Wisconsin-humid. i still loved the weather there because nights cool down and are awesome. Boone is your closest inroad to the Appalachians, about 3-4 hours away. and a lot of highly underrated wine is grown in NC. quality of the beer has really been improving, too. all in all i think the weather is perfect in NC. seemed to me harder to form friendships with Southerners since i wasn't local, but no matter. either way i'll be moving back to the state sometime near Winter.
  2. i'm a fan of trading Gomez now because i think right now his value is highest and i think he nets the best prospect of anyone else we have. even with the possibility of an offensive slide, we can't discount the value playoff teams place on a great defensive outfielder. no disrespect to Schafer, but we've got nobody who could fill the role of full-time CF next year, and Melvin has always hated making trades that create other holes on the team. it seems like if Gomez were to be traded, you'd absolutely have to get a CF prospect back in return, and that's a pretty narrow trade parameter.
  3. i heard they were talking to Washington about Ersan for their #1 pick, but that was before Washington lucked out with a top-3.
  4. oftentimes i try to switch listening ears (phone-related) based on if i'm having an emotional conversation (friends or a lady) or a business-related one. trying to match up the side of the brain that would be best for dealing with that.
  5. you guys are being too negative. all we need is the addition of a solid, veteran presence to turn this team right around.
  6. Is he really so bad that it is worth swapping Jennings, a mid first, for another mid first? Won't we end asking the same questions out of whatever late pick we get for him? Seems pointless just to have two first round picks in one year since basketball isn't a quantity game.
  7. it's kinda too bad the Schrute Farms series wasn't picked up, because i thought the pilot to it was pretty good.
  8. wow, to be off by a second or so is one thing, but that was horrible. the 15' closer he could have gotten would have increased the chance of that shot significantly. still, i'd rather see the $10M go to a young and exciting player than yet another retread veteran.
  9. thanks. it's lawn care, but checking shouldn't be necessary. i'll only be doing it for a summer.
  10. so the lawn care job is commission-based, primarily. but i don't do any active selling and the hiring manager said there wouldn't be a situation where i was ever out of work to do. but there are work goals (hit X# of houses per week) and i didn't get clarity in the second interview to what happens if i don't happen to meet that. will go back to ask. still, it will pay more than minimum wage and give me my time for certifications. there's a fear of "what if i don't meet my goals and don't have the time to meet them because of classes?" fear of mine that's possibly unwarranted.
  11. we tend to lionize people when they leave, whether it's in death or a favourite player retiring. i think any thought of him going in the Ring of Fame is just that. Driver was a good player, sure, but if you were a fan of another team you're not going to look at Driver's numbers and think of him as a particularly special player, but more as one who was good and happened to have a very long career. you look at the Ring of Fame and those are players you wouldn't trade for all the gold in the world. i don't look at Driver's career in the same light. if i had to compare him to a Brewers player, i think Geoff Jenkins would be appropriate. they both gave their all to the team and were definitely good players, but i don't think anybody is looking back at Jenkins' career and wanting to paint him in any extra-special light.
  12. media pressure may be tough, but it's hard to think it would be tough enough to make ARod forfeit $30M or so. and it's not like he has to stay in NYC to recover or anything. he doesn't have a legacy to protect as it is, and the media has been ripping on him ever since he came to NY in the first place. there's no way i'd voluntarily turn down such a huge amount of money. so the Steinbrenners can stay a little richer? it's part of collective bargaining that individual teams can't make certain contract decisions like this that would significantly impact a player, so voiding his contract would become a league decision. and with the strength of the union, good luck with that. ARod will get his money and he's earned it. all the power to him.
  13. Packer comments usually get bumped to LambeauLeap.net. it's a good site worth visiting. since he won't be a HOFer, i can't see a street or Ring of Honor, but the Packer HOF would be nice.
  14. that stinks, Jimbo. i know just what that feels like to be working at a job, know your stuff and do a good job, and then they replace you with someone else. rough. .................... well, it took me about two months, but i finally found some work in Madison. wasn't easy. i've been offered a minimum-wage job at a movie theater (i'll be a popcorn jockey!) starting Monday. and i also have a second interview tomorrow for a lawn care job, which i have a very good chance at landing. the lawn care job doesn't start for two months, but it pays twice as much with a few more hours per week. money is secondary to me because my real purpose is getting the various certifications to strengthen my Parks&Rec resume (not all are available the next two months). still, the lawn job represents another $6,000 or so on my pocket vs. the movie job over the course of the summer. so i've decided to go to the second interview and basically agree to work there on the condition that they give me the days off when the certification classes come along. if they don't, then bye-bye. if they do, then work the movie job for two months with a lot of volunteering. and since volunteering is very important for me, taking the lawn care job will mean working six days/week and then volunteering somewhere on that one day off. and if i have a job interview, i'll tell them it's another certification class. i'm really doubting they'd agree to the time off (roughly 10 total days off during the summer), but i can always ask and see what they say.
  15. kind of a cheap shot. eh, i feel sorry for the guy. we all want to be in love, and some of us want it so desperately we'll let ourselves believe anything.
  16. when i was last there, Fort Atkinson was at least an easy-enough drive to Madison. and there's probably more to do in Whitewater that i never discovered. last year i was living in Victoria, Texas. i'd ask locals the best part of living there and they'd all say how close it was to so many big cities (2+ hours). i didn't say it out loud, but thought "oh, so the best part about living in Victoria was that it's easy to leave Victoria."
  17. thanks for the advice. i talked to another friend of mine about it. he reminded me that what they're looking for is the best person for the job NOW, which is probably me. and no matter when i leave, i'll be doing so for more money or to better my career, and who can argue with that? everyone else at that company is doing the same thing. the life of an Assistant there is already fairly short since the company is in Fort Atkinson and no single, young person they hire really wants to stay in small-town Wisconsin for very long. so i applied and i'll let HR decide. on another note, just letting out some frustration, but wow it's tough even finding part-time work right now. i've had one single interview since i've been back here and didn't get the job because it didn't appear i would stay at the position for 2-3 years--the $8.25/hr part-time position. just amazing the state of the economy that people can actually expect this and keep a straight face.
  18. with the Bucks at a low franchise value and Seattle presumably taken, it sounds like the team would be an ideal contraction candidate.
  19. ethical question... i'm having a lot of trouble finding even simple part-time work, though keep my open for full-time openings. i used to be a magazine editor, worked at one place for 2+ years before i quit to hike the AT. enjoyed the job and was good at it, but don't like the industry because jobs are terrible to find and i've seen too many editors with 10+ years of experience working for $35K per year. my plan right now is to work whatever PT job to pay for my Parks and Rec certifications to make me more marketable for a job. well, i noticed that my old editorial company is hiring for what appears to be my old job. we'll just assume they'd actually hire someone back who'd quit the job previously. i don't hold that an employee owes a company too much loyalty just for being hired by them, but is it maybe unethical of me to accept the offer (should they even make it) when my intention would be to quit a second time? it seems like that's really a jerk move. sure, maybe i decide to stay, but one promotion above me only pays about $34K/year, and Parks and Rec still pays better, plus sweet sweet government benefits and more job security. it just seems like maybe lying to the editorial company saying "oh, i just miss editorial work" and quitting the same place twice just isn't right.
  20. Tucker and Dale Versus Evil. and i think Tommy Boy just showed up on Netflix Streaming if you want some mindlessness. of if you want a tv show, you can't beat Top Gear, especially their specials.
  21. ....sounds more like 2013 is entering in with a comfortable sorta happiness.
  22. we gotta beat the Tenuta household this year, fellas!
  23. CBS Sports is reporting that Wisconsin is going to hire Gary Anderson from Utah State.
  24. there could be a whole thread for this topic, i'd imagine. i'm 35 and just worked on a house with the father this week. he showed me how to use a screwdriver, speaks for me even if i'm standing right there, and multiple times said "If you're thirsty, you should get a drink." the contractor even told him to quit calling me "honey."
  25. makes you kind of sick to your stomach to first read the Dempster thread with mostly "2/$36 is pretty high," and then see this news.
